By Jim Simpson Every day we hear more reports about the rising Islamist threat. Stephen Emerson reports alarmingly about the Islamists hidden among us. Al Qaeda is reportedly alive and spreading all over the world – morphing into a many headed snake. Meanwhile, Iran has moved from bluster to bully as it seizes British sailors on the open sea and blatantly ignores worldwide demands to cease its nuclear program, while continuing to arm Iraqi terrorists in direct defiance of the United States. Islamist militants in Palestinian-controlled areas and Lebanon visibly flex their muscles both militarily and diplomatically, while Muslims worldwide stridently demand absurdly special treatment in the non-Muslim societies where they have settled. As a friend once said, paraphrasing Trotsky: “You may not be interested in Islam, but Islam is interested in you.” Without diminishing the threat these worldwide activities pose, it is important nonetheless to recognize that they are a distraction, a deliberate provocation designed to keep our eyes focused on the wrong enemy. The true threat is and always has been the worldwide communist movement, spearheaded by the Soviet Union (oh sorry, I keep forgetting, “Russia,”) and Communist China. And given the cacophony currently being raised by their Islamist provocateurs, I fear the sucker punch is not long in coming. We are obsessed with routing out “al Qaeda” in Iraq but almost willfully ignore that the insurgency remains largely driven by the Iraqi Ba’athist party’s highly organized network, with assistance from their Ba’athist cousins in Syria. I fear that if we merely defeat al Qaeda, our misidentification of the enemy will lead us to give up the fight early, leaving the much more dangerous Ba’athist infrastructure in place. In such circumstances, we will soon be facing another Saddam. Similarly, it is easy to see a Shia-led Iraq fall into the Iranian camp if we leave. (I described this potential problem in great detail before the war started. See: Regime Change Means Eradicating the Ba’ath Party.) The Russians initially trained, funded and equipped the Ba'athists in both Syria and Iraq. They taught them the tactics being used now in Iraq against us. They continued to provide Saddam with military advice during the first Gulf war and at least the beginning of the current one, and I remain confident that they provide the Ba'athist insurgents with some manner of support to this day. They assisted in the removal of Saddam's WMD to Syria. According to defector Ion Pacepa, the former Romanian Intelligence chief, Russia long ago developed a contingency plan for all puppet states to hide WMD should Western powers appear close to exposing them. (Read all about that here.) Russia is helping Iran develop nuclear weapons. Russia’s Ba’athist puppets in Syria train and arm Iran’s Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine, as well as practically every other terrorist group operating around the globe. As for Iraq, Russia is indifferent as to whether it falls under the Iranian sphere, or returns to Ba’athist rule. In either case, it’ll be just another puppet. Russia only cares that we lose. Russia's strategy has always been to use others to do their fighting for them. It is also to make surrogate powers a threat to the US in and of themselves, both as a tactic to distract us from the true threat and to help insure that we fire first at the wrong enemy if it ever comes to that. And just as the notion of "Stateless" terrorist groups is a red herring, so is that of "rogue states." (Note: to understand why the whole idea of “Stateless” terrorists is absurd, you need only examine the funding requirements for such activities and realize that their prospects for defeating a large nation unassisted are virtually zero. You have to believe that these groups have unlimited resources and will squander them on activities that can get them killed for no ultimate purpose. And if your answer is “Bin Laden” read here to understand why this is false too.) North Korea remains attached to Russia and China at the hip and does not operate independently on the world stage. It is just one front on the offensive line, as is Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria and so, so many others. I foresee for example, a possible scenario where a so-called “rogue state” like Iran or North Korea, fires a nuclear weapon at us. We respond in kind, and the Russians, feigning fear that they are the target, launch a massive retaliatory strike against us. Whoops, sorry comrade, our mistake! The US needs to get clearer on who and what we are fighting. For starters, we need to eliminate the Ba'athist power base and obliterate Iran’s covert networks to win a decisive victory in Iraq. This will demonstrate both to ourselves and our enemies that we can win this kind of war and serve as an object lesson to the enemy that we are capable of making their chosen tactics very expensive. By this measure we are currently losing. However, I fear that if we give up, it will be the last time any politician musters the political courage necessary to confront this kind of warfare, and we will continue to face more and more of it until we are an island alone in the world against a sea of enemies. At that point it will start here at home, or we will merely be given an ultimatum with nuclear blackmail, and our feckless political class will fold like a reed in the wind. For the longer term, we need to significantly increase both our military size and effectiveness – more troops, effective anti-missile defenses, as well as conventional weapons, where we may not have as much of an advantage as we think – and dramatically improve intelligence gathering. I am not optimistic that any of this will get done. But if Hillary Clinton or some other Democrat is elected in 2008, we will assuredly go in the polar opposite direction. Hard times ahead. Anyone Armed with the Facts Could Have Predicted…
By Jim Simpson An article in Tuesday’s Wall Street Journal, Straight Talk on Palestine, states bluntly that the Palestinian government remains committed to terrorism and still refuses to recognize Israel’s right to exist. This only comes as a surprise to the cognoscenti. In fact, way back in the 1970s, when we knew the PLO were merely monstrous terrorists, a plan was hatched by their Soviet sponsors to deliberately deceive the West into believing that then PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and his merry band of murderers had moderated. It’s a pretty amazing story. This counterintelligence deception is discussed in great length in a book, Red Horizons, by Gen. Ion Mihai Pacepa. Gen. Pacepa was Romania’s intelligence chief under the regime of Nicolae Ceausescu and was the highest ranking Soviet block intelligence officer ever to defect to the West. You can get some of the threads by reading an interview with the author here. He also has a lot to say about Saddam’s ephemeral Weapons of Mass Destruction. Read about that here. The cliff notes version: all Soviet-sponsored states have an emergency plan for removing or destroying their WMD if Western powers get too close to discovering them, and the Soviets helped Saddam get rid of his before the US showed up. This article makes a fascinating read regarding the entire subject. Read it if you have the time. But I digress. Back to the PLO and Palestine. There are explicit, straight-forward reasons why the Palestinians do not now, never have and never will, settle for merely getting their own state. Some of the reasons for this may surprise you. I wrote an article shortly after Yasser Arafat died, which discussed the man, the history of the PLO and why it is an absolutely incontrovertible fact that the destruction of Israel always has been and always will be the Palestinians’ only true goal. Titled, “Who Was Yasser Arafat?” you can see it here. This article will arm you with the facts regarding the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and allow you to make easy predictions about what is to come. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the true nature of that conflict. It will also broaden your understanding of the entire Middle East problem. As the Arabs keep telling us, the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is the epicenter. But few can really articulate why, when it directly affects such a small number of them. This article may suggest some answers. Reading the few articles referenced above reveals to any open-minded person that the facts are out there, available for all to see, and provide pretty straight-forward, if not immediately apparent reasons for some of the chaos we face today. The rest can be similarly explained. Yet we remain dangerously alone in the dark. It is a testimonial to the depths of duplicity some members of our political and media classes have gone to hide the truth, that these plain, simple facts are not common knowledge. Through ignorance in some cases, but I believe malevolent intent in many more, these people really do not want us to know the truth. I call them traitors and their numbers in Congress, the media and elsewhere are significant and growing. We are tottering at the brink. Time to raise the alarm bells. Al Gore’s Lies Keep Getting More Inconvenient
By Jim Simpson An article in the Wall Street Journal this Monday, "Whose Ox Is Gored," brought up yet more troubling truths for Al Gore and his global warming propaganda film "An Inconvenient Truth." First, it seems that not only do Al Gore's "carbon offsets" for his lavish and extremely energy intensive lifestyle not pass the sniff test, but the Journal also revealed that he has earned an annual income from zinc mines on his Tennessee property which "emitted thousands of pounds of toxic substances and several times, the water discharged from the mines into nearby rivers had levels of toxins above what was legal," according to the Nashville Tennesseean. The Journal further reports that the mine was issued a citation in 2000 by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for exceeding legal zinc discharges. The mine was initially purchased, by the way, from notorious American communist and Soviet agent of influence Armand Hammer, who had a lifelong relationship with the Gores and helped Al senior get elected to the Senate. The Journal also highlighted the fact that many scientists who ascribe generally to the global warming thesis, are now coming out of the woodwork to question and criticize Gore's errors, omissions and fast and loose misuse of the statistics. The New York Times, not known for it's ant-Gore OR anti-global-warming bias, published an article on the front page of its Science section last week titled, "From a Rapt Audience, a Call to Cool the Hype." And finally, the Journal even quotes one of Gore's own advisors with this gem:
Even James Hansen, a scientist who began issuing warning cries about global warming in the 1980s and is a top adviser to Mr. Gore, concedes that his work may hold "imperfections" and "technical flaws."The Journal adds:
Other flaws are more serious, such as Mr. Gore's depiction of sea level rises of up to 20 feet, which would cause Florida and New York City to sink below the surface.
They point up the UN's own Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which forecasts a much more modest rise in water levels of only three feet by 2100. The IPCC itself has had to do a lot of downward revising in its estimates recently as well. For example, its three-foot estimate of water level increases in the most recent report is less than half of the estimate given in its 2001 report. Similarly, the estimate of overall human impact on climate was revised down by one-third. Clearly folks, when even the global warming alarmists start publicly doubting their own statistics, this cannot be called a settled issue, much less a prescription for radical change advocated by self-serving lunatics like Al Gore. The one that really gets me though is the "carbon offsets." By now it is common knowledge that Al Gore's massive use of energy, both in his palatial home and by his chosen modes of travel, could probably be used to power a third-world country. A brilliant device of Vladimir Lenin allowed that fellow comrades might be treated a bit "more equal than others" because of the sacrifices they had to make in bringing enlightenment to the masses. He called them the "Vanguard of the Elite," and when they took power, it gave them the excuse to live the lavish lifestyles they were all already beginning to enjoy as power brokers in the new Soviet Union. Well today, like any good Leninist, Al considers himself one of the Vanguard, who naturally is entitled to greater amenities than the rest of us poor slobs because of all he is doing to enlighten us. However, because we are as yet a democracy, poor old Al still has to answer to all of us stupid voters, damnit! So he has invented a cute little trick that allows him to get away with his excessive lifestyle while still appearing green, and making a profit at it to boot! Al tells us that by purchasing what he calls "carbon offsets," trees, which absorb carbon dioxide, will be planted sufficient to offset his excessive use of fossil fuels, which, as we all know, produce carbon dioxide as waste. It's a highly doubtful enterprise, with the Journal citing CNSNews as saying carbon offsets were “meaningless in terms of global warming.” But worse than that, Gore is getting these "carbon offsets" from a company that he owns. And it turns out that free "carbon offsets" are one of the benefits to company employees, so he isn't paying a dime! In fact, one of the major beneficiaries of the whole "carbon offsets" scam is Al Gore himself. It might even have something to do with the real reason he is hyping global warming so much. Having cited "carbon offsets" as an "alternative" to true conservation, Al now conveniently offers them for sale to other similarly-minded individuals, fellow elitists who think they know everything and are willing to impose their idiotic ideas on the rest of us, while casually excusing themselves. So of course all of the wealthy movie stars who wouldn't trade their limos and private jets for a Prius and coach class if their lives depended on it, are sending big bucks to Al's offset company so they can feel good about themselves and champion global warming awareness, while continuing to maintain the profligate, self-indulgent lifestyles to which they have become accustomed. I would call it outrageous, but the Liberals are being outrageous so often these days it has become the norm. But what else would you expect from liberals? Look up the word "hypocrisy" in the dictionary. It is spelled L-I-B-E-R-A-L.

Featured Contributor: Faultline USA
You've noticed, in the recent past, the fine work contributed to Maggie's Notebook by TXWise of Faultline USA. If you are a conservative, Faultline USA's work has likely come to your attention. Here's an inside look at the background supporting TXWise's sharp commentary and the ability, and determination, to dig-deep into the issues: TXWise has had quite a few overlapping careers in her life: LMSW Social Worker, Field Instructor for graduate social workers, Small Publications Editor (before the internet they were called “Zines”), Theologian, Certified Mediator, Facilitator, Workshop Presenter (Conflict Resolution), Visiting Peacemaker, and overall a highly opinionated on-call know-it-all. She holds a Masters in Theology , and a B.A. in Sociology. According to TXWise . . . In my younger adult years I was a self-satisfied, smug, Liberal. Rearing children into adulthood is one sure way to punch more than a few holes into Utopian thinking. In the late 90’s I decided to follow through on my long-held desire to go back to graduate school to earn a Masters in Theology. It was there in seminary where I learned that my true calling was not the ministry, but the preservation of our American Republic! Navigating life in a leftist seminary brought out all that I had earlier denied – my true conservative roots!!! One of the first lessons I learned in seminary is that you cannot divorce religion from culture. Every religion carries with it the mark of the culture that gave it birth. Either religions will adapt to cultural change, or the culture will adapt to religious change. Change one and you change the other. It’s as simple and as complex as that. The second lesson I learned in seminary (a liberal mainline Protestant seminary) was that there is a major investment by liberal (mainline) denominations in promoting Religious Pluralism in the name of Social Justice and cultural diversity. The third lesson I learned in seminary is that any conservative thought openly espoused by either student or professor was tantamount to heresy!!! You cannot progress in a “progressive” institution if you are even the slightest bit conservative. While the liberal seminaries give lip-service to tradition, Christian tradition is merely a tool for deconstructive argumentation. The lifelong lesson I learned in seminary is that our nation is under direct attack from the left, which has successfully infiltrated all of our cherished institutions – especially mainline Christianity. If we love America, each of us can no longer afford to remain silent.

Border Agents Ramos and Compean - Action?
Hallelujah! - I think. (Links to related articles at the end) FIRST MY RANT: These men should be free until their appeals are exhausted. They didn't kill the drug runner. In fact, because he did not stop running, because a bullet in the bottom didn't stop him for a second, the agents didn't realize they had hit him. Another day on the border. Put your life on the line, encounter a drug runner, try to stop him after you think you see a gun, and get hauled off to prison. This is NOT the American Way. We brought this criminal back to the U.S., treated his buttock wound in our hospital at taxpayer expense, gave him a car right here in the U.S., and what does he do - he runs some more drugs. This is not the American Way. So Judicial Watch is attempting to acquire information from the Department of Homeland Security.
"We are interested in learning about any deals brokered between the U.S. and Mexico following the shooting incident in 2005," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Given the public and congressional controversy surrounding the case, the more the American people know about what happened, the better."That's exactly right, so, Judicial Watch has:
...announced today that it has filed a new open records lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Department of State (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. Department of Homeland Security, et al., #1:07-cv-00506(RJL)).And:
...records regarding the immunity and medical treatment given to Mexican drug smuggler Osbaldo Aldrete- Davila, who was shot and wounded by U.S. Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean in a 2005 drug-related incident. To include:
...all communications between the three government agencies and the agencies and representatives of the Government of Mexico, as well as records pertaining to the participation of U.S. government personnel in coordinating the return of Aldrete-Davila to the United States for medical treatment, meetings with federal investigators and to testify in court. Then here are a few words about the unacceptable state of our southern borders:
In 2006, Judicial Watch uncovered documents that detail the chaotic and dangerous nature of the U.S. border with Mexico. The records, obtained by the Department of Homeland Security, describe incidents involving shots fired on both sides of the border, unmarked Mexican helicopters invading U.S. airspace, drug smuggling, and confrontations between U.S. Border Patrol agents and armed members of the Mexican military. If you are not familiar with the efforts to free, or at least clean-up the court proceedings that convicted these two men, here's some background: Border Patrol Trial: Transcript Shows Judge Withheld Information and Finding In-Depth Reporting on Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean and here's the beginning of the nightmare for these agents: 2 Border Patrol Agents to Turn Themselves in Today for Shooting Mexican Drug Runner Then here's three articles discussing the miserable circumstances some American citizens face in their hometowns and on on their private property: Guarding the Borders: Ranch Rescue The Appalling Mire of Mexican Abuse Life on our Southern Borders You can read the actual lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security at Judicial Watch. CAIR: Front for Radical Islam? - You Decide
No tolerance from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, as you will see when you watch this passionate video interview of terrorism analyst, Steve Emerson on Hannity and Colmes.
After the video you'll find some commentary on Islam convert, Ismail Royer, (formerly known as Randall Todd of St. Louis) now in prison on numerous charges of terrorism.
Here's the Deparment of Justice release on the sentencing of Randall Todd, then and now known as Ismail Royer. Randall/Royer and Ibrahim Ahmed Al-Hamdi, the famous "Yemenian" were sentenced for participating in the "Virginia Jihad Network."
Here's a more colorful account of Todd/Royer from Daniel Pipes:
I mention this unsavory person because today he was indicted and arrested for his association with terrorism, specifically his having joined the Pakistani group Lashkar-e-Taiba, traveled to Pakistan, done propaganda work for it, and "fired at Indian positions in Kashmir."
In addition, the indictment also states that Royer "possessed in his automobile an AK-47-style rifle and 219 rounds of ammunition" in September 2001. The grand jury charges that Royer "did unlawfully and knowingly begin, provide for, prepare a means for, and take part in a military expedition and enterprise to be carried on from the United States against the territory and dominion of India, a foreign state with whom the United States was at peace."
It's also worth noting that Royer was working for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), militant Islam's most aggressive political organization in North America, when he began training with Lashkar-e-Taiba. (He served there variously as a communications specialist and a civil rights coordinator; see an IslamOnline "Live Dialogue" for him sharing a by-line with CAIR's executive director, Nihad Awad.)
This means that CAIR now has a record of at least two former employees indicted and arrested in 2003 on terrorism charges; the other was Bassem Khafagi, CAIR's director of community relations before his arrest this January. Oh, and one must not forget that a member of CAIR's advisory board, Siraj Wahhaj, was named as one of the "unindicted persons who may be alleged as co-conspirators" in the attempt to blow up New York City monuments nearly a decade ago. So, CAIR not only apologizes for terrorism but is now implicitly accused of having more direct links to it. (June 27, 2003)

Europe's Struggle with Islam
I was reading some of the great content on RealClearPolitics today. I noticed a "reader article" submission that I see as an urgent appeal. At the same time, the article was heartening to me in that some Europeans (many, I'm sure) are concerned about Islam and Islam's plans for Europe. Charlemagne at The View From Here is asking us to give the Brussels Journal a read and some blogging support - since the MSM will not do so. Arriving at the Brussels Journal site, I found an article reference to Diana West's article in the Washington Times: Long Division, dated March 17, 2007. Ms. West asks:
"Why don't our leaders face [the likely transformation of Europe into an Islamic continent]? This may be one of those questions our children will ask some day."Ms. West points to the:
"...still-increasing Muslim immigrant population that is resulting not in the Europeanizing of Islam, but rather the Islamizing of Europe."Ms West says this about "Tabloid America:"
"Without attracting much attention, representatives of the Belgian political party Vlaams Belang recently visited Washington, D.C. Frank Vanhecke and Filip Dewinter hoped to meet members of Congress; but Congress was in recess. They hoped to engender some understanding of their program to reverse the Islamization of Belgium; but the media were strip-mining the tinsel life and tawdry times of Anna Nicole Smith. Maybe they should have known that Tabloid America doesn't care about the likely transformation of Europe into an Islamic continent, let alone the fate of a French- and Dutch-speaking country of 10 million people. And while Literary America does write books about the transformation -- "While Europe Slept" by Bruce Bawer, "The War for the West" by Tony Blankley and "America Alone" by Mark Steyn come to mind Political America has yet to acknowledge or even notice this colossal, epoch-defining shift now taking place."I am not well acquainted with Belgium's politics. If Ms. West's information is correct, the largest political party in Belgium, Vlaams Belang, is attempting to notify the world that much of Europe is in deep trouble, and by extension, "...the strategic implications for the United States are, in a word, bleak."
As Vlaams Belang's Mr. Dewinter recently put it, "We are becoming foreigners in our own land."Then this...Ms. West reports that for six straight years, "Mohammad" has been the most popular boys name in Brussels. To the real issue of living freely. Ms. West writes of the way it is in Belgium:
In multiculturally totalitarian Belgium, however, you make such judgments at your own risk. Vlaams Belang, a conservative, free-market party that stands for Flemish secession from the French-speaking part of Belgium and opposes continued immigration, now stands trial in a Belgian court for a comment -- a comment! -- Mr. Dewinter made in 2005 to a New York publication, The Jewish Week. When asked why Belgian Jews should vote for a party that espouses "xenophobia," Mr. Dewinter replied: "Xenophobia is not the word I would use. If [it] absolutely must be a 'phobia,' let it be 'Islamophobia.' Yes, we're afraid of Islam. The Islamization of Europe is a frightening thing."The last paragraph of the Washington Post article makes the need for Charlemagne’s appeal, and that of Ms. West's article, perfectly clear:
As Mr. Vanhecke put it in a recent speech, "They call us 'intolerant' because we oppose intolerance. They call us 'fascists' because we oppose Islamofascism. They call us 'the children of holocaust perpetrators,' because we oppose Islamists who are preparing a new holocaust against the Jews."Back to The Brussels Journal and Ms. West's article there, published under the title: Islamization is not Inevitable, the reader comments are insightful, including the comments about America's "dead Detroit." Al Gore is fighting his fight around the world it seems - and Belgium has been graced with his presence recently. A piece in the BrusselsJournal.com tells of a photo-op where the liberals tried to keep Gore all to themselves - didn't want to share his Global-highness, I guess. A three-hour meeting also did not extend an invitation to the conservatives, however, the conservative Vice President showed-up and was "reprimanded" by the liberal President. (Caveat here: I am applying the words "liberal" and "conservative" - correctly, I hope.) The comments on this article are a good read - hilarious, in fact. Ending with more of the serious stuff: Charlemagne and The View From Here has a thoughtful piece up: Will Europe Go Gently into the Goodnight? Linked blogs may or may not coincide happily with Maggie's Notebook.

Kalisto89's Never Again: A Message to the Iranian Enemy
I always find razor sharp content, biting and hilarious humor, and intriguing videos at Bullwinkleblog. At Bullwinkle, I found a video from a young (17 years old) Israeli director, Kalisto89. The whole world is probably familiar with this young man's work, but I was not. I am now a YouTube enthusiast. In viewing Kalisto89's catalog of videos, this one is especially meaningful to me. Here is a young Israeli who DOES know about the holocaust and is smart enough to equate it today's terrorists. I'm confident that there are many, many Israeli youth who are very aware; Kalisto89 has the talent to tell the story. Here's Kalisto89's: Never Again, A Message to the Iranian Enemy - and a whole new mission for the rap industry:

Iraqi's Pefer TODAY to Saddam
This Sunday morning brings the news that many conservatives knew should be a reality, but couldn't confirm in the news. The March 18th UK Sunday TimesOnline reports this:
The poll, the biggest since coalition troops entered Iraq on March 20, 2003, shows that by a majority of two to one, Iraqis prefer the current leadership to Saddam Hussein’s regime, regardless of the security crisis and a lack of public services. The survey, published today, also reveals that contrary to the views of many western analysts, most Iraqis do not believe they are embroiled in a civil war. And, so there can be no claims that the poll was sabotaged by pollers with an agenda, this direct from the UK Sunday TimesOnline.com:
Officials in Washington and London are likely to be buoyed by the poll conducted by Opinion Research Business (ORB), a respected British market research company that funded its own survey of 5,019 Iraqis over the age of 18. The 400 interviewers who fanned out across Iraq last month found that the sense of security felt by Baghdad residents had significantly improved since polling carried out before the US announced in January that it was sending in a “surge” of more than 20,000 extra troops. The TimesOnline.com on Maliki in February 2007 compared to September 2007:
The poll suggests a significant increase in support for Maliki. A survey conducted by ORB in September last year found that only 29% of Iraqis had a favourable opinion of the prime minister. Yet 49% of those questioned preferred life under Nouri al-Maliki, the prime minister, to living under Saddam. Only 26% said things had been better in Saddam’s era, while 16% said the two leaders were as bad as each other and the rest did not know or refused to answer.Still on Maliki, a few paragraphs down in the article:
“We’ve been polling in Iraq since 2005 and the finding that most surprised us was how many Iraqis expressed support for the present government,” said Johnny Heald, managing director of ORB. “Given the level of violence in Iraq, it shows an unexpected level of optimism.”The TimesOnline.com on Iraqi's and Civil War:
Another surprise was that only 27% believed they were caught up in a civil war. Again, that number divided along religious lines, with 41% of Sunnis believing Iraq was in a civil war, compared with only 15% of Shi’ites. And then, the UK TimesOnLine.com does some updating this weekend, in Iraqi neighborhoods:
This weekend comments from Baghdad residents reflected the poll’s findings. Many said they were starting to feel more secure on the streets, although horrific bombings have continued. “The Americans have checkpoints and the most important thing is they don’t ask for ID, whether you are Sunni or Shi’ite,” said one resident. “There are no more fake checkpoints so you don’t need to be scared.” The inhabitants of a northern Baghdad district were heartened to see on the concrete blocks protecting an Iraqi army checkpoint the lettering: “Down, down with the militias, we are fighting for the sake of Iraq.”This only makes sense. Who can believe that life was better under Saddam? Only those who benefited from being an insider. Read the good news and the entire article at UK Sunday TimesOnLine.com Also reporting on television and online: Fox News: Only 27% of Iraqis say Country in Civil War

Good News from Iraq
"And intermixed amongst this part of Baghdad are great Iraqi citizens who are eager to get on with their lives, to enjoy the benefits of a secure environment and to participate in the reconstruction of their nation."
Col. J.B. Burton, U.S. Army, Commander,
2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.
Map courtesy of geography.com
A March 16, 2007 news briefing by Colonel Burton.
Colonel Burton talks about his unit's deployment:
"Now let me tell you a bit about our area of responsibility in northwest Baghdad. We're responsible for coalition force activities across an area of about 93 square kilometers, with an indigenous population of about 1 million people. Our area of responsibility runs from Kadhimiya in the northeast and then extends west to include Shula, and then south to include Ghazalia, Khadra and Amiriyah, and then east again, to include all of the Mansour area north of Route Irish.Colonel Burton talks about the mission:
This heavily urbanized area is further defined by being principally Shi'a in the northeast, Sunni in the west and southwest, and mixed in the southeast. There are sectarian fault lines that further define these areas, where both Sunni and Shi'a extremists vie for control over portions of the city and its citizens.
These contests between extremist actors come in various forms, from extremely horrific acts, like car bombs being detonated in public gathering places, to illegal militia control over access to gas stations and food distribution programs, to execution-style murders by death squads, designed to terrorize local citizens into leaving a specific area or to supporting a sectarian cause.
And intermixed amongst this part of Baghdad are great Iraqi citizens who are eager to get on with their lives, to enjoy the benefits of a secure environment and to participate in the reconstruction of their nation.Col. Burton took questions from the press after his briefing. Read them at DoD briefing.
Our brigade combat team's mission here is to secure the Iraqi people within our area of responsibility, in order to provide the Iraqi government a chance to govern. And we do that by focusing our efforts to defeat extremist actors, increase the professional capabilities of the Iraqi security forces, and by assisting local governmental leaders in their efforts to govern effectively.
Under the Baghdad security plan, we have deployed most of our forces away from the big forward operating bases and occupied smaller, more austere combat outposts and joint security stations throughout the area of responsibility.
This deployment of forces out and among the people has had an immediate and positive effect on the overall security situation, on the professional capabilities of our partnered Iraqi security forces and on the abilities of local governmental bodies to form and operate. Our soldiers are living out in the neighborhoods of Baghdad with our Iraqi security force partners. Working with us here in partnership are 10 Iraqi army battalions and two national police battalions, which are deployed across two security districts of the Karkh area command, those being the Kadhimiya security district and the Mansour security district. We plan and conduct operations together. We grow in capabilities together, and together we are increasing the trust and confidence in the Iraqi people in their nation's forces to provide security.
The fundamental necessity for improving the quality of life for Iraqis in Baghdad is security. And to achieve that necessity, the Baghdad Security Plan is focused on three basic parts: clear, control and retain.
In the clear and control phases, Iraqi and coalition forces will not simply clear neighborhoods and then leave them unattended. We will clear the neighborhoods of extremists and then emplace measures to control those areas and protect the population so that they are not threatened by extremist forces in the future. These gated and secure communities facilitate the rebuilding of neighborhoods, with security provided through the combined efforts of Iraqi and coalition forces, allowing local governmental processes to take root and improve access to basic and essential services. The establishment and maintenance of the joint security stations within these communities is an integral part of the clear and control phases."
