Earthquake 6.5 Mag 265 Miles North of San Francisco

A 6.5 magnitude earthquake has hit, with an epicenter 22 miles W NW of Ferndale, California, 265 miles north of San Francisco. Details as available - continuing updates.

After-shocks of 3.8 and 3.5 are reported with another earthquake measuring 3.7 in Petrolia, California.

This from the southern California Earthquake Data Center:

A minor earthquake occurred at 4:50:58 PM (PST) on Saturday, January 9, 2010.
The magnitude 3.5 event occurred 36 km (22 miles) WNW of Ferndale, CA.
The hypocentral depth is 6 km ( 4 miles).
Telephone lines are reported down in Ferndale, and some damage to city hall.

At 7:33 p.m. CST, still no injuries or deaths. Some gas lines ruptured.

In 1992 the Cape Mendocino earthquake rocked Ferndale with three powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.1, 6.6 and 6.7 magnitudes. There were no deaths in the 1992 quakes. The 1906 San Francisco great quake also affected the Ferndale area, with the rupture running the length of more than 290 miles.
