Dennis Elwell is Secaucus NJ Mayor Arrested

Dennis Elwell is the Secaucus, NJ Mayor arrested in an FBI sting this morning. See video below. See updates below.

Elwell is 64 years old and has been the Democrat Secaucus mayor for more than 20-years. He is a member of the Town Council and is the president of a family-owned trucking business, a decorated Vietnam combat veteran and a former Secaucus Board of Education member. The charges against Mayor Elwell are not yet available, although local media is indicating the arrests are linked to federal "high-volume, international money-laundering conspiracy."

Newly elected Hoboken mayor, Peter Cammarano III (Democrat) was also arrested this morning, as well as Lumberton Township administrator and State Assemblyman, Daniel Van Pelt (Republican) You can view Cammarano's FBI complaint here.

According to the Wall Street Journal, 44 people have been charged, including religious leaders.
 
Update 7-23-09 6:35 p.m. CDT: Elwell is charged with conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. This charge can bring a penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a maximum statutory fine of $250,000.00 Update 7-25-09: Dennis Elwell is out on bail of $100,000.00 unsecured bond. He is one of the few defendants allowed to travel for business purposes only. His family trucking company travels to Connecticut, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire.
