James J. Lee is Discovery Channel Gunman with Explosives: James Jay Lee is Discovery Channel Gunman with Explosives

Fox News has just revealed the name of the man with explosives and perhaps a gun, inside the Discovery Channel building in Silver Springs, Maryland. The man is James J. Lee, or James Jay Lee said to be of Asian descent. He is believed to armed with a gun and explosives. There are reports of either one or two unconfirmed gunshots heard. He is reportedly angry that Discovery Channel  has not done more to "save the planet," and he wants them to shop showing human babies, who he believes are "parasites on the planet." At 2:25 p.m. CDT, police are saying they are in touch with Lee by telephone. See an early video below.

At 3:53 p.m. CDT police conference: Three people were taken hostage in the lobby. James Lee was shot about ten minutes ago. A device went off. There was some smoke. All hostages are released and safe.

4:47 p.m. CDT James J. Lee or James Jay Lee is dead according to Shep Smith at Fox News

James J. Lee or James Jay Lee

The man in the left photo above is identified by Thaindian News. The photo on the right is provided by Fox News. Keep in mind the identification may be incorrect. Shep Smith is saying Lee is from San Diego, California. At 2:20 p.m. CDT Shep confirms this is the man inside the Discovery Channel building with explosives strapped to his body. He has been living in a homeless shelter known as Progress Place. He is 42 years old.

Shep is reading a report that says James J. Lee watched Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth and believed he was not doing all he should be doing to save the earth. He also read a book, Ishmael, or the sequel, My Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn, about "gorillas in captivity," and Lee had an "awakening." In the trial, he said he wants a new industrial revolution where we care for the planet better, according to Fox.

A Discovery Channel employee, Marsy Shattuck spoke with Shep Smith on Fox, saying the people in the building knew this man. About a year or more ago he organized a protest outside the building. He advertised in newspapers and paid homeless people to hold signs and walk in front of the building. Part of that report comes from Catherine Herridge from Fox.

James Jay Lee protesting outside the Discovery Channel Building about 2 years ago

People were reported lying on floor of the Discovery Channel lobby in Silver Springs, Maryland. A later report says people can be seen milling around inside the lobby.

At 2:02 p.m. CDT Marsy Shattuck is on Fox News with Shep Smith. Shattuck was on the 5th floor when an announcement was made for employees to lock themselves into a office. Later they were told evacuate.

Police this minute 2:15 p.m. CDT says Lee entered the building wearing silver or metallic cannisters strapped to his body. They believe a few hostages are inside the building. Most of the employees inside Discovery Channel building are safely outside. Police said there are 1900 employees who work inside the building, but only a small number of hostages.

Eye witness said he/she "saw people coming of the building in waves." An eye witness said she heard two gun shots. Another report says one shot was fired.

Fox is showing small children being removed from the building in small cribs - apparently from a day care facility inside the building.

It is believed that the man with the explosives tried to organize a protest about two years ago outside of the Discovery Channel building. Joke among us. ads in newspaper, no one showed up for protest. He wanted Discovery to do more to "save the planet."

Shep Smith is reading a report that James J. Lee was found guilty in 2008 of loitering. At the time he threw thousands of dollars in dollar bills into the air, and accused Discovery of not spending money wisely on projects. He was also charged with littering, but was not found guilty. Lee has given thousands of dollars to people who wrote short essays on Saving the Planet.

At 2:25 p.m. CDT police are confirming one hostage, believed to be a security guard. Police are cannot confirm that a shot or shots were fired.

At 2:44 p.m. CDT from Catherine Herridge: Two pipe bombs and four cannisters were seen on him. One was identified as a gas you can use for "soldering." Lee was holding a stapler with a red blinking light on top. Police say this is perhaps similar to a "dead man's switch" which is a  force multiplier with the explosives. They listened in on his phone line and he cut the contact.

At 2:45 p.m. CDT Shep is reporting there is a massive law enforcement presence outside the Discovery Building.

At 2:55 p.m. CDT Shep says all schools in the area are on lock-down.

At 2:57 p.m. CDT we are awaiting a press briefing scheduled to begin 7 minutes ago, by the Montgomery County Marland police.

Begin conversation with Lee's brother-in-law, Thomas Leonard: At 3:01 p.m. CDT Neal Cavuto is on the phone with James J. Lee's brother in law, Thomas Leonard. Leonard is married to Lee's sister. Leonard said Lee has been unstable and disagreeable personality with erratic behavior - emotional outbursts. Lack of respect for any authority, be it family or civil authority. Lee has been abusive and hurtful to the family who loves him and has tried to get him help over the years. He has often been alienated from family. After some deaths in the family his "spirit took a nosedive" and he turned "darker." Lee has been an artist - did some work in Los Angeles maybe for movie stuff." He was incarcerated for a few years in LA or San Diego.

More from Thomas Leonard: The deaths in the family were his mother, Amy, who raised him as a single parent along with her father, who was the patriarch of the family and very respected. It impacted him tremendously. Living in the shadow of some of his siblings success he was perhaps one of the most talented but misguided person. Incredibly bright. A few years back he claimed to have a life threatening illness, which was not true - it was a scam and he was fishing for money. He asked the family to give him money for treatments for a terminal illness.

More from Thomas Leonard: I believe that everybody in the family just doesn't know what to do to help him, and he was reluctant and ungrateful for any help. He had every opportunity to live a decent respectable life. Leonard knows of no violent incidences with Lee. The entire family has been alienated from him for a number of years. Leonard said he expected when Lee did become entirely desperate, he expected to find Lee at his door - in other words, he thought Lee might come for him first. He believes that Lee is capable of committing murder. He is capable of committing suicide.

More from Thomas Leonard: If the grandfather was still around, he would 'hang' him.

At 3:10 p.m. CDT Fox has updated their website, saying police have been talking to Lee for almost two hours via telephone. Another police press conference is expected at 5:00 p.m. EDT.
Authorities will not give the location of the suspect in the building, or how many hostages there are. They will only confirm that there is a small number of hostages.
At 3:21 p.m. CDT Fox is reporting "hostages" being held, not a "hostage." Catherine Herridge is now talking about the "dead man's switch," which may be the stapler with the red light on it. Police have told her, if this is a "dead man's switch," it use is to detonate if the the person holding it is shot.

At 3:32 p.m. CDT a person near the building says the security perimeter surrounds most of the the City of Silver Springs and people are caught in restaurants, etc. and cannot get out.

At 3:53 p.m. CDT police conference: Three people were taken hostage in the lobby. James Lee was shot about ten minutes ago. A device went off. There was some smoke. All hostages are released and safe. They believe there are no injuries. James Lee is in police custody. His James condition is unknown.

Ten Buck Friday Blogs Send Their Bucks to Eric Wargotz Week 3

Dr. Eric Wargotz is the run-away winner of Ten Buck Friday donations for Week 3. Wargotz is running for the U.S. Senate seat from Maryland against incumbent Democrat, Senate Barbara Mikulski. See a video below.

Dr. Eric Wargotz

Eric Wargotz is a physician and the elected president of the Queen Anne's County Commission.
Commissioner Eric Wargotz received his M.D. from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and is a graduate of Rutgers University. He completed his post graduate medical training, including Chief Residency, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center of Washington D.C. and the George Washington University Medical Center where he received the Frank N. Miller, M.D. Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching.
Eric Wargotz is a physician-businessman managing several medical businesses. He served as a Laboratory Medical Director for 17 years responsible foradministering and managing a busy hospital department including operating and capital budgets, management team and employees totaling over 100 at times, and scrutinizing department. and hospital activities to ensure proper utilization of resources.
He is former President of the Queen Anne’s County Medical Society (QACMS 2000 – 2004) and is Clinical Professor of Pathology at the George Washington University Medical Center and a member of their Medical School Admissions Committee.
The County Commissioners awarded him a certificate of appreciation in recognition of “civic and meritorious service” for his services in 2004. He has been honored for his civic service through House Resolution #280 2004 and Senate Resolution #470 2004. A House of Delegates Official Citation was received in 2003.
Dr. Wargotz' and his wife Cheryl-Ann have been married 14 years and have three children. See a list of his community and civic activities at the Examiner, and read more on his conservative philosophy. The video below is a good (although noisy) interview at CPAC 2010. Wargotz is asked many questions, some quite difficult. While he did not have time for lengthy answers he answered each with conviction, and he obviously believes strongly in State's rights. Read this for his own statement.

Wargotz has received the endorsement of Major General Paul Vallely, retired Army. Vallely is a Viet Nam veteran and a senior military analyst for Fox News. He speaks loudly and often about the threat of Islam and is spearheading an Impeach Obama campaign...and has asked President Obama to resign. Endorsed by the Republicans for Environmental Protection,

Dr. Wartgotz is trying to unseat incumbent Senator Barbara Mikulski, who earlier this year was rumored to be retiring. GovTrack rates her a "far-left Democrat. She votes with her Party 98.5% of the time. The very Progressive EMILY's List is her biggest donor. Mikulski served in the U.S. House from Maryland's 3rd District from 1977-1986, then moved to the Senate in 1987 - so that is about 23 years in Washington, D.C.

In the September primary, Wargotz is facing other Republicans, including Dr. Neil Cohen [dentist] described as a "moderate Republican."

Update 7-10-10: There has been some controversy regarding Dr. Wargotz. Please read this before making your donation.

Update 7-13-10: Liberty at Stake took the initiative to contact Dr. Wargotz directly. Here is his email and the reply from Wargotz follows:
Dr. Wargotz, I am a conservative citizen participating in the Ten Buck Fridays bloggers program. You must of course know you won the week three voting. In the aftermath of the voting, the claim was raised that you had once said in an interview (paraphrasing) "you hoped President Obama would extend health care benefits to illegal aliens."
If this in fact means you are in favor of blanket amnesty for illegal aliens, I would be unable to send you my Ten Buck Fridays donation.
But, if you can clarify your stand for me, by answering the following simple questions, I will ensure all the other bloggers in the Ten Buck Fridays Program are apprised of your clarification (and I will of course follow through with the donation at that point.)
1. Will you support the conservative position that the border must be secured before any other "reform" is undertaken?
2. Will you support the conservative position that (only after securing the border) any "path to citizenship" in any "reform" must ensure illegal aliens are NOT granted citizenship ahead of anyone presently standing in line under the legal immigration system.
Thank you in advance for your thoughtful reply.
From Dr. Wargotz to Liberty at Stake:
1. I categorically deny that I have ever stated verbally or in writing that I favor extending health care to illegal aliens.  I have stated that it is ashame that the president and congress chose not to address illegal aliens when debating the health care issue since the illegals have such an adverse effect on our health care system.
2. I have always stated that the borders must be secured first and our laws must be enforced.
3. I have always stated that citizenship / amnesty is not an option for illegals.  We must not reward people who break our laws.
I hope this clarifies my position.
Did you know that in my 3.5 years as County Commissioner Queen Anne's County has become a member of the Federal Secure Communities program (google it) in April of this year, has deported the most illegals out of all the counties on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and has adopted a resolution pertaining to vendors in the county against hiring illegal immigrants?
All initiated under my watch ( I was the functional Chair of the Commission for my first 2 years.)  End Wargotz reply.
[Liberty at Stake] I think he said his take on path to citizenship is even tougher than mine.  That's good enough for me to follow through with the program, and look forward to giving the contemptible progressive Babs Mikulski her pink slip. Cheers.
Thanks to Liberty at Stake who took the time to inquire into the controversy.

Flag Day: Star Spangled Banner, Long May You Wave Over the Home of the Free and the Land of the Brave

Today is Flag Day, a day we celebrate The Star Spangled Banner - not the Anthem, but the flag, as Francis Scott Key saw it in battle and penned it in 1814 at 35 years old. The morning after the bombardment of Ft. McHenry, our flag with 15 stars and 15 stripes represented a united 16 states. This is the flag that Key saw in the dawn of his morning:

The Star-Spangled Banner the morning of September 13, 1814
after the Ft. Henry, Maryland Bombardment

Please scroll down for current news

Some say the lyrics of the Star Spangled banner are out-dated - we need a new Anthem, they say, but the words are still as wonderfully expressive to me, as they surely were then to those who loved this country enough to risk all they had.

Perhaps we sing the song without thinking about the meaning behind the words. Think about it. Francis Scott Key looked for the flag from an anchored ship, in the breaking dawn of the battle for Fort McHenry.
...let's go back to the summer of 1813...At...Fort MHenry, the commander, Maj. George Armistead, asked for a flag so big that "the British would have no trouble seeing it from a distance." Two officers, a Commodore and a General, were sent to the Baltimore home of Mary Young Pickersgill, a "maker of colours," and commissioned the flag. Mary and her thirteen year old daughter Caroline, working in an upstairs front bedroom, used 400 yeards of best quality woold bunting. They cut 15 stars that measured two feet from point to point. Eight red and seven white stripes, each two feet wide, were cut. Laying out the material on the malthouse floor of Claggett's Brewery, a neighborhood establishment, the flag was sewn together....It measured 30 by 42 feet and cost $405.90.
At 7 a.m. in the morning of September 13, 1814, the British bombardment began, and the flag was ready to meet the enemy. The bombardment continued for 25 hours....The Americans had sunk 22 vessels so a close approach by the British was no possible. That evening the connonading stopped, but at about 1 a.m. on the 14th, the British fleet roared to life, lighting the rainy night sky with grotesque fireworks.
Waiting in the predawn darkness, Key waited for the sight that would end his anxiety; the joyous sight of Gen. Armistead's great flag blowing in the breeze. When at last daylight came, the flag was still there!
Bombardment of Ft. McHenry

At dawn, Key anxiously peers into the distance to see if the flag still waves, proving the battle for God and country has not been lost. And indeed it was waving. Could there be more poignant words to describe our flag than "a star-spangled banner?"

He sees her broad stripes and bright stars, still waving over a perilous battle.

At twilight, the bombs are still raining down, the glare of the bursts again show proof that the symbol of freedom, the Star Spangled Banner, is still waving over the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

Ronald Reagan once said we should always ask: "Oh say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave?"

As long as we are remembering to ask, perhaps the answer will never be "No."

You might be interested in this essay written in March 2010 by a college student whose school decided to ban the National Anthem. The decision was overturned, but the writer reminds the school of "the back story" of the Anthem and titles the essay "A History Lesson for the President of Goshen College."

In the video below, a beautiful, and unknown voice to me (maybe Jordin Sparks) sings The Star Spangled banner. The lyrics are on the screen, and if you haven't done it recently, take a moment on Flag Day to sing along and think about the men in battle, the families under seige, the enemy on our shores, and celebrate our star-spangled banner. Today, still protecting the star-spangled, is the U.S. Army, celebrating a 235th Birthday on June 14th.
