Christine O'Donnell Palin-Endorsed!

Sarah Palin has endorsed Christine O'Donnell for the Senate in Delaware. Sitting Republican Congressman Mike Castle is trying to move up to the Senate and occupy the seat left behind when Joe Biden move up to the Veep office. Castle is a Republican-in-Name Only (a RINO) and scores so far Left on the Gov Track meter that we have to ask, how much Republican does this man have in? Not much. Castle voted for the DISCLOSE Act and the failed cap-and-trade. Sarah's endorsement came on Sean Hannity's program today.

Christine O'Donnell and Sarah Palin

Here are the dynamics of this race, all of which just changed drastically. Castle is running double digits ahead of his Democrat opponent, and O'Donnell is running double digits behind the Democrat. Will Delaware's voters want a true conservative sitting in the seat vacated by Joe Biden?

O'Donnell ran against Biden in 2008 and there are some stories about that. Obviously, Sarah does not believe Christine's detractors. From Christine:
They knock on the door at all hours of the night. They’re hiding in the bushes when I’m at candidate forums. In 2008 they broke into my home. They vandalized my home. They wrote nasty notes on my front door, on my front porch. They jeopardized my safety. They did the same thing to our campaign office. They broke into our campaign office. They vandalized our campaign office. They stole files. My campaign signs that had my picture—they put a spear in my mouth poked out my eyes, and cut out the part of my heart, and wrote nasty names all over those campaign signs.
There has a small war between conservative bloggers about Christine O'Donnell's candidacy. With very little momentum in her campaign, some are asking why voters would want to risk losing a Republican, even it is Mike Castle, by voting for O'Donnell, giving way to a Democrat win. Recently, The Other McCain had a lot to say about it (and has supported Christine from day one) reminding us that she is pro-life and Castle is not. I will remind, once more, that Castle voted for the despicable DISCLOSE Act and the Obama failed cap-and-trade. Having said that, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie endorsed Castle. Read The Other McCain on O'Donnell and be sure to browse through the archives.

Colbert at his Best, Saluting Troops Who "Won the Iraq War." Biden Defends Bush: Is it a Gaffe?

This is the Col-bair Repoir! Celebrating the troops who "won the Iraq war!" Even without Biden admitting that Bush handled the Iraq war well (was that a gaffe?), seeing the troops with Col-bair is FABULOUS!

Michelle O Jill Biden: Jill Disrespects MO? FLOTUS Not Fond of Jill Biden

Meeeee-shell, the Belle, reportedly believes that Joe Biden's wife Jill Dr. Jill Biden disrespects her.

Michelle Obama

The report is from the Enquirer which occasionally gets it right, so take this with a good measure of skepticism. However, as Weazel Zippers says, "the odds are there's some truth behind it." Their source is said to be a "political source in the nation's capital," and the headline is a bit dramatic: Why Michelle Obama Hates Jill Biden's Guts!

As the story goes, Joe and Jill are far too casual around the First Family and it is insulting to MO. Talk about insulting - how about FLOTUS insulting us, and walking the streets of Spain in daytime looking like this - I mean, she is a First Lady!

Michelle Obama in Spain

I think I can pinpoint Dr. Jill's problem. She has no background in organizing, and probably little experience with people who did not live in a compound before coming to the White House. A background of shilling in Chicago Mayor Daley's office for a living may also be repugnant to Mrs. Joe Biden.

Mammoth A-Whale Oil Skimmer Still Awaiting Approval from EPA Coast Guard

The mammoth A-Whale Oil Skimmer is creeping toward the Gulf area, but has still not received the red light from the EPA or the Coast Guard. The Plaquemines Parish president, Billy Nungesser, says with the A-Whale,  they could be "kicking butt." Nungesser says if we lose this war, it will be the President's fault. Biden walked in for a photo op and left. The parish prez had 30 seconds with the Veep. Day 71! See the video below.

Near the coast line of Chadeleur Islands, LA on June 23, 2010

"No sense of urgency to get it to work"
NORFOLK - After making a brief stop in Norfolk for refueling, U.S. Coast Guard inspections and an all-out publicity blitz intended to drum up public support, a giant tanker billed as the world's largest oil skimming vessel set sail Friday for the Gulf of Mexico where it hopes to assist in the oil-cleanup effort.
The Taiwanese-owned, Liberian-flagged ship dubbed the "A Whale" stands 10 stories high, stretches 1,115 feet in length and has a nearly 200-foot beam. It displaces more water than an aircraft carrier.
Built in South Korea as a supertanker for transporting oil and iron ore, the six-month-old vessel was refitted in the wake of the BP oil spill with 12, 16-foot-long intake vents on the sides of its bow designed to skim oil off surface waters
The vessel's billionaire owner, Nobu Su, the CEO of Taiwanese shipping company TMT Group, said the ship would float across the Gulf "like a lawn mower cutting the grass," ingesting up to 500,000 barrels of oil-contaminated water a day.
But a number of hurdles stand in his way. TMT officials said the company does not yet have government approval to assist in the cleanup or a contract with BP to perform the work. Source.

Also see the A-Whale at sea. The project manager says the ship can take in up to 500,000 barrels a day, and all the oil gathered so far is only 600,000 barrels.

Kopps Custard Manager Asks Biden to Lower Taxes: Joe Ignores Him - Eats his Free Ice Cream

What a jerk. Joe Biden was in Greenfield, Wisconsin for a fundraiser for Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI). He and his entourage stop by Kopp's Custard Stand. Biden donns a two-corner hat, gets behind the counter and does something unuseful. We see him with a cone of yummy-looking frozen custard. He loses the hat and tries to pay. The smiling Manager tells him the custard is comp'd, then asks Biden to "lower taxes." Biden doesn't even look the guy's way. He completely ignores him and walks away. Arrogant, rude, brutish and uncalled for behavior. Update: see second video below, in which Real Clear Politics says Biden called the Manager a "smartass."

Stanley McChrystal Rolling Stone Mag: McChrystal Comes to Washington for Dress-Down or Firing

General McChrystal gave a Rolling Stone Magazine freelancer unprecedented access to the every day life of fighting the war in Afghanistan. Apparently, the writer 'came, saw, listened and wrote' and  McChrystal is now the target of Obama's wrath for some very cheeky and disrespectful remarks he and his top senior aides made. McChrystal will face his Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates at a meeting of the administration's monthly Security Team meeting - today. By the way, Rolling Stone tells us that McChrystal voted for Barack Obama. See an important update below.

General Stanley McChrystal

The writer of the Rolling Stone piece, Michael Hastings, accompanied McChrystal to an out-post in the Kandahar area of Afghanistan. A 23-year-old soldier had just died as he entered a booby-trapped home.
Unit Commanders sought permission to blow-up the property, and that permission was denied:
One soldier at the outpost showed Hastings, who was traveling with the general, a written directive instructing troops to "patrol only in areas that you are reasonably certain that you will have to defend yourself with lethal force.
During a tense meeting with Ingram's platoon, one sergeant tells McChrystal: "Sir, some of the guys here, sir, think we're losing, sir."
This from Washington Post writers Londono and Shear (linked above):
McChrystal has championed a counterinsurgency strategy that prioritizes protecting the population as a means to marginalize and ultimately defeat the insurgency. Because new rules sharply restrict the circumstances under which air strikes and other lethal operation that have resulted in civilian casualties can be conducted, some soldiers say the strategy has left them more exposed.
So as  McChrystal let loose, and let fly, we know our troops are not fighting a war, rather they are commanded to "win the hearts and minds of the locals" and they are dying at an astonishing rate. Is this the way McChrystal wants to fight this war, or is this his best effort considering restriction placed on him by the Obama administration?

We ask what McChrystal was thinking when jokes were made about Joe Biden (who is uniquely qualified to be joked about), when he said meeting with Obama was "disappointing," the President of the United States was "unprepared," and is quoted saying National Security Adviser Jim Jones is a "clown," "stuck in 1985."

We are told McChrystal is "uniquely qualified" to lead our troops in that mean country, but is Barack Obama "uniquely qualified" to command McChrystal?
The article, titled “The Runaway General,” appears in the magazine later this week. It contains a number of jabs by McChrystal and his staff aimed not only at the President but at Vice President Biden, special envoy Richard Holbrooke, Karl Eikenberry, the ambassador to Afghanistan, and others.
McChrystal described his first meeting with Obama as disappointing and said that Obama was unprepared for the meeting. National Security Advisor Jim Jones is described by a McChrystal aide as a “clown” stuck in 1985. Others aides joked about Biden’s last name as sounding like “Bite me” since Biden opposed the surge
The media is calling for his head. Senator John Kerry, just minutes ago said nothing is more important than our mission in Afghanistan, and he advises everyone to stay cool and calm for at least a couple of days. In other words, he seems not to recommend an immediate firing. He is not alone in his opinion.
In a day and time when 17 Afghanistan pilots can be brought to the U.S. and allowed to disappear into the heart of America, and the administrative arm of the U.S. Air Force sees it as an "immigration" problem, I think we have a huge problem. Winning the hearts and minds of Muslims in a Muslim country centuries behind the rest of the world, who hang 7-year-old-boys is not going to happen. What was and is Stanley McChrystal thinking?
So what do you think? Will McChrystal be fired or only humiliated? Who knows, maybe McChrystal will quit. I think he is beyond frustrated. Any real soldier would be.

Update 6-22-12:55 a.m. EDT:

Generals run war according to the Rules of Engagement (ROE) written for a specific engagement. So if things are not going swell in Afghanistan, who wrote the rules of engagement? It appears that McChrystal and the Pentagon came up with winning the hearts and minds of the people, perhaps after Obama made it clear that that was his goal.

U.S. forces have been told to exercise extreme caution before ordering airstrikes.
By exercising so much restraint, the U.S. military may sacrifice a key firepower advantage on the battlefield and expose ground troops to more risk, some officers and analysts say.
"There is a tradeoff," said Col. Gian Gentile, a former battalion commander in Iraq who has publicly criticized counterinsurgency doctrine. "You reduce civilian casualties, but you potentially increase your own casualties."
Doug Macgregor, a retired Army colonel and military historian, says the emphasis on having conventional forces trying to win over the population is futile.
"You surrender whatever military advantage you have by compelling the U.S. conventional soldier or Marine to fight on terms that favor the enemy, not the American soldier or Marine," Macgregor said.
From George Will June 20, 2010, tells of Officers requesting permission to hit a location, and that permission being denied - Americans died:
"There were villagers laughing at the U.S. casualties" and "two suspicious individuals were seen fleeing the scene and entering a home."
U.S. forces "are no longer allowed to search homes without Afghan National Security Forces personnel present." But when his unit asked Afghan police to search the house, the police refused on the grounds that the people in the house "are good people."
Another example from Will, when a unit asked for artillery fire on an enemy position and that request was denied, they asked for permission for a "smoke mission," firing an "illumination round" that shows an enemy position.
This request was granted -- but because of fear of collateral damage, the round was deliberately fired one kilometer off the requested site, making "the smoke mission useless and leaving us to fend for ourselves."
Sweetness and Light posts the entire Rolling Stone article. The following seems to shed a lot of light on the "rules of engagement:
From the start, McChrystal was determined to place his personal stamp on Afghanistan, to use it as a laboratory for a controversial military strategy known as counterinsurgency. COIN, as the theory is known, is the new gospel of the Pentagon brass, a doctrine that attempts to square the military’s preference for high tech violence with the demands of fighting protracted wars in failed states. COIN calls for sending huge numbers of ground troops to not only destroy the enemy, but to live among the civilian population and slowly rebuild, or build from scratch, another nation’s government – a process that even its staunchest advocates admit requires years, if not decades, to achieve.
The theory essentially rebrands the military, expanding its authority (and its funding) to encompass the diplomatic and political sides of warfare: Think the Green Berets as an armed Peace Corps. In 2006, after Gen. David Petraeus beta-tested the theory during his “surge” in Iraq, it quickly gained a hardcore following of think-tankers, journalists, military officers and civilian officials. Nicknamed “COIN-dinistas” for their cultish zeal, this influential cadre believed the doctrine would be the perfect solution for Afghanistan. All they needed was a general with enough charisma and political savvy to implement it. As McChrystal leaned on Obama to ramp up the war, he did it with the same fearlessness he used to track down terrorists in Iraq: Figure out how your enemy operates, be faster and more ruthless than everybody else, then take the fuckers out.
And this look at McChrystal's viewpoint in September 2009:
"What I'm really telling people is the greatest risk we can accept is to lose the support of the people here," Gen. Stanley McChrystal told CBS's "60 Minutes" in an interview aired Sunday night.
"If the people are against us, we cannot be successful. If the people view us as occupiers and the enemy, we can't be successful and our casualties will go up dramatically."
So the question is, how's that working out for you? We know how it's working out for the troops.

Bye-bye Vice President Biden?

By Findalis of Monkey in the Middle

That is the speculation and prediction of Liz Peek.

Joe Biden has been a liability to the Obama Administration Regime since he was put on the ticket in 2008.  It seems the Vice President has Foot-in-Mouth Disease.  He opens his mouth and inserts his foot.  He has become an embarrassment and a political liability to this regime. Therefore he must go!

Ms. Peek predicts that Obama will cut loose Joe Biden in favor of Hillary Clinton.

Here’s a prediction: the Obama administration will bounce Joe Biden off the 2012 ticket, and invite Hillary Clinton to run in his stead.

The move will aim to bolster Obama’s standing and provide some excitement among core Democrats – something that Biden fails to provide. Hillary will agree, because just four years later she will be superbly positioned to run for president – ever the rainbow on her personal horizon.

At present, her polls are high, with 58% of voters viewing her at least somewhat favorably.

Wistful Dems who wonder these days what could have been will tout her hard work and pragmatic diplomacy as she chases one impossible Obama pipe dream after another to all corners of the globe.

Certain wishful Dems are hoping she will challenge Obama in a primary. I don’t think so. As Ted Kennedy found when he tried to pick off Jimmy Carter in 1980, even an unpopular incumbent is still an incumbent.

If the White House political team brings Clinton on board over the next year, they can remove whatever threat exists from that quarter. Meanwhile, Hillary can bide her time and husband her resources, eventually running against Obama’s legacy.

She will have better answers on health care, a subject she has studiously avoided discussing, and could adopt her husband’s centrist approach to trade and taxes to win over independents.
Up until President Eisenhower, the position of Vice President on a political ticket was easily changed.  FDR had 3 different VPs (John Nance Garner, Henry A. Wallace, and Harry S. Truman.).  So it isn't out of the question or against historical precedent.

Joe Biden was originally chosen for his experience in foreign affairs.  A skill it seems, judging from the last 2 years of this regime, neither Joe Biden or Barack Hussein Obama have or ever has aquired.

Nor has Hillary Clinton showed her great skill in foreign policy and foreign affairs in her tenure as Secretary of State.

In fact the trio remind on of the bumbling antics of the 3 Stooges.  It would be funny, but the price to our security is too high for such jokes or jokers.

I have always wondered why Joe Biden was brought onto the ticket.  He brought no electoral votes, no region of the nation to swing towards Obama, he is a bumbler, a fool at times, yet he and not Hillary was chosen to be the VP.  Could it be that the idea of President Biden is so horrible to the nation that the Congress will allow Obama to do anything to prevent that from happening?  Does Joe Biden make Obama safe from impeachment?  If so, why the change of heart?

This is all speculation and will not matter if Obama's polls continue to drop.  Who is going to vote for a President with a 20% or less approval rating?  Pretty much no one.  So regardless of who is on the ticket in 2012, as things look right now, Obama is a one-term President and should be considered a lame duck.

Obama Biden: Two Jets Two Airports Within a Few Miles of Each Other for Earth Day

The gigantic carbon footprints of Obama and Biden grow even bigger today, because this is EARTH DAY. Obama and Biden will each take separate jets, to fly 250 miles to New York. They will land at different airports and attend separate events "within a few miles of each other."

Air Force One

Air Force One bearing the The One is a 747/VC-25 aircraft. Air Force Two bearing the veep is a 757/C-32A (at least that is what this post at NYC Aviation claims). Air Force One and Air Force Two will:
...delay dozens, if not hundreds of commercial flights at kennedy and LaGuardia and other nearby airports as no-fly zones are implements. Jets will be forced to circle and burn more fuel as they wait for the VIPs to come and go. Their security contingents consisting of dozens of cars, SUVs and helicopters wil burn even more. Throw in thousands of commuters' cars and delivery trucks sitting idle in traffic as law enforcement closes large swaths of the city and you have yourself a very Earth-unfriendly day.

Brandon Halcomb Letter to Joe Biden: High School Junior Letter to VP Biden

Brandon Halcomb is a junior in high school. He took the time to write a letter to VP Joe Biden and it should give us the courage to recognize that there many fine young high schoolers across our country who recognize our politicians for the pitiful specimens that they are. Mr. Biden, the world is watching, and when we pick ourselves up off the floor, the "F" word still resonates.

The following letter was sent to the editor at GoodNewsDaily.net, from a 16-year-old, asking for help in getting his message to U.S. Vice President Joe Biden. Mr. Biden, are you listening?)
Thank you to Fort Hard Knox
Brandon Halcomb
A Concerned Christian Youth of Today’s America
Dear Vice-President Joe Biden:
Today is a sad day for my fellow Americans and me when such a powerful figure, such as yourself, could so loosely use the “F” word on national television. I know you have to understand the powerful influence you hold on children’s lives across the nation. As a junior in a public school in eastern Kentucky, it is hard enough to try to escape or get through the school day without hearing such perverse words from my own peers. However, to hear such a prominent man who helps hold our country in his hands blatantly use such a word makes me worry about my country’s morals and values.
My grandfather did not have half the education you have, but he taught me three things: An intelligent person listens more than he speaks, he also never swears in front of women or children, and he always wears a shirt in public places, unless he’s at the beach or the swimming pool. My grandfather always said, “I know in a society where anything goes a young guy has to take a stand on something; if he doesn’t, he will fall for anything.” Although I am only sixteen, I do try to honor my deceased grandfather’s words of wisdom.
Vice-President Biden, you have offended some of your fellow Americans, myself included. It was wrong for you to have used such vulgarity in a public place, let alone at the taxpayers expense as you celebrated such an awesome landmark with our President. However, Vice-President Biden, to me, you cheapened that occasion with such tastelessness while congratulating the President on this event.
Many may say, I am so young what do I know? I know that I have grown up in a wonderful country that has tremendously changed throughout the years. Although I love the changes America has gone through with freedom, it frightens me to think of how weak Her morals and values are beginning to become. Vice-President Biden, you owe your fellow Americans, or at least its youth, an apology for the use of such an inappropriate word. I, for one, refuse to think that this is what has become of the English Language, especially when there are more powerful words and ways to get one’s point across.
In conclusion, some may call me old fashioned for upholding my grandfather’s good ole American morals and values. However, our ancestors founded this country on these very principles: hard work, integrity, and honor. What honor can a man have if he defiles his own name? Mr. Vice-President, please while holding our futures in your hands, do not allow any more of America’s morals or values to be lost. Please, I beg, leave the profanity behind closed doors, and enlighten today’s youth with the words of wisdom that YOU have to pass down to my generation. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,

Obama, Clinton, Schumer, Reid on Nuclear Option and Naked Power Grab (Video)

The video below stars then-Senator Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden and Harry Reid. In 2005, the Senators were piling shame on Republicans for using Reconciliation, also known as the Nuclear Option. Note that Republicans DID NOT use Reconciliation. The video follows some history on Reconciliation and the Nuclear Option.

Video pull-out quote:

I pray God when the Democrats take back control we don't make the kind of naked power grab you are asking. ~ Senator Joe Biden 2005
While researching Senate Rule XXII, cloture, filibusters and Reconciliation (nuclear option), I found a long essay which says Rule XXII is not what the Founders had in mind:
Rule twenty-two lends itself to criticism just in its very nature. The idea of a supermajority being needed in order to do the business of the country upsets a lot of reformers who wish to see what the founders pictured: a majority driven legislature.
A vital note about Reconciliation, the Nuclear Option, comes from The Snooper Report, which reminds us that the only time Reconciliation can be used  is in passage of a budget bill. The health care bill is not a part of a budget bill...yet. Here's how that will work:
Congress includes reconciliation instructions in the budget. Those instructions direct certain committees -- say, the Finance Committee and the Health, Energy, Labor, and Pensions Committee -- to produce health-reform legislation hitting certain spending targets by a certain deadline. Once finished, the legislation is tossed back to the Budget Committee, which staples it together into an omnibus bill and sends it to the floor of the Senate for 20 hours of debate followed by an up-or-down vote.
Senator Robert Byrd has a "rule" named after him - The Byrd Rule. The question is, will the Byrd Rule rule when it comes to Obama's health care?
The Byrd rule states that legislation is unfit for reconciliation if it "produce[s] changes in outlays or revenue which are merely incidental to the non-budgetary components of the provision." I asked Jim Horney, a budget expert at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, how you define "merely incidental." And what, exactly, is a "provision"?
He sighed. A provision, he said, is "not defined anywhere. It goes well below a title or section of a bill and even below a paragraph. But exactly what it is nobody knows." And the Senate rules offer no more clarity on the definition of "merely incidental." Asked if anyone had developed an accepted meaning, Horney seemed almost apologetic. "No," he said. "Absolutely not."
The matter is not simply academic: The Byrd rule allows senators to challenge the acceptability of any provision (undefined) of a reconciliation bill based on whether or not its effect on government revenues is "merely incidental" (undefined). Thus, if you enter reconciliation with a health-reform bill, it's not clear what's left after each and every provision -- however that is defined -- is challenged and a certain number of them are deleted altogether: the tax portions, certainly. And the government subsidies. But is regulating insurers "merely incidental" to government revenues? How about reforming hospital delivery systems? How about incentives for preventive treatment? Or the construction of a public plan? An individual mandate?
A supermajority vote of 60 was needed until 1975, under a Republican President and a Democrat Congress holding the majority in both the House and the Senate: Source.
The liberal Senate majority, determined not to be blocked by endless argument over legislation in a period of economic crisis, last week approved a compromise that achieved the first new limitation on debate since 1959. A filibuster will be choked off if 60 Senators (three-fifths of the total membership) vote to do so. That is seven less than the number (two-thirds) that had been required under the Senate's celebrated Rule 22, assuming the entire Senate was present and voting....
The fight was led by Democratic Senators Walter Mondale of Minnesota and James Pearson of Kansas, with an invaluable assist from Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, whose partisanship as presiding officer enraged his conservative critics....
Although conservative Senators angrily assailed Rockefeller for this high-handed tactic, Rocky was technically right. The Senate rules specifically permit the presiding officer to ignore a parliamentary inquiry when he believes it is being used as a dilatory tactic.
In 2005, when Democrats threatened to filibuster Bush's judicial nominations, Senator Bill Frist suggested that a filibuster on judicial nominees was inconsistent with the constitutional grant of power, and have VP Dick Cheney rule a simple majority was all that was needed to seat the nominees. Other events intervened and what was to be known as the Nuclear Option was not used.

History of the Nuclear Option:
The Senate's rules have allowed unlimited debate, or filibusters, since 1806, when senators dropped a rule that allowed a majority of the Senate to put an end to discussion and call for a vote. For the next 111 years, there was no way to stop a filibuster once it had started.
But in 1917, when filibusters were blocking Woodrow Wilson's plans for World War I, the Senate adopted Rule XXII, which allowed senators to end a filibuster by a two-thirds vote on a motion to cut off debate -- a procedure called "cloture."
In 1975 the Senate amended Rule XXII so that cloture required, in most cases, the vote of not two-thirds but rather three-fifths of the senators. In today's 50-state, 100-member Senate, that means it takes 60 rather than 67 senators to put an end to most filibusters.
The Founders did not "found" the filibuster.
There, however, is no constitutional framework that says that senators should not have the right to unlimited debate. But, the filibuster which permits a small minority and even one Senator to stop a piece of legislation, was not intended by the framers at all. In fact, it has been argued by some that because the Constitution does lay down the times when a supermajority is needed, (e.g. 2/3 vote for convicting an impeached president and for signing treaties), therefore, only a majority should be needed to pass any legislation. This is further backed up by the Supreme Court Decision in United States v. Ballin, 1892.
In this case, Justice David Brewer, speaking for the majority says, “the general rule of all parliamentary bodies is that when a majority is present, the act of the majority of the quorum is the act of the body. This has been the rule for all time, except so far as in any given case, the terms of the organic act under which the body is assembled have prescribed specific limitations. ”
About Cloture:
What is cloture? In simple terms, it is the ability of a supermajority to shut off debate thus ending a filibuster. Any senator may file a motion of cloture providing that sixteen senators have signed it. Two days after a cloture motion is presented to the presiding officer, it is available for a vote one hour after the senate convenes. After cloture has been invoked, the Senators have thirty hours to debate, add amendments, and raise points of order . Once the thirty hours are completed, a vote on the pending legislation will be taken. Also it is important to note that once cloture is invoked, senators are only allowed to introduce germane amendments.

Cloture has not always been like this. When rule twenty-two was adopted in 1917, it took 2/3 of the Senate who was present to vote for cloture providing there was a quorum. In 1949, rule 22 was amended to state that 2/3 of the entire senate, or 67 members were required to vote to end debate. In 1959, rule 22 was amended again lowering the required number of senators to 2/3 of those who were present and voting. In 1975, cloture was lowered to 3/5 of membership or 60 members to vote for it. Since the drop in the number of members needed to invoke cloture, cloture votes were twice as successful then in the period from 1959.

The other major reform that took place in cloture was the time allotted to debate after cloture was invoked. Originally rule 22 never specified the amount of time that was permitted for debate after cloture was invoked, senators began to exploit the rule in the late 1970s. They started what became known as the post-cloture filibuster, where after debate had been supposedly ended, they would continue to tie up the floor with more debate, amendments, and points of order. For example, Senator X would have control over the floor and ask for every amendment to be read, despite relevance or necessity. This post-cloture filibuster would eat up a large amount of time.
Thus, in 1979, the Senate amended rule 22 to state that post-cloture debate would be limited to one hundred hours or one hour per Senator. The only problem with this reform was that the one hundred hours did not include points of order or readings of amendments, so the post-cloture filibuster still worked in delaying the passage of a bill. Again in 1986, the senate voted to amend rule 22 to limit post-cloture debate to 30 hours including all points of order. This recent amendment has pretty much eliminated the post-cloture filibuster.
This is what happens when we fool around with the original intent of the Founders.

Biden Ignores Operation Moshtarak: Biden Shivers over Pakistan

As thousands of troops launched a huge offensive in Helmand Province, Afghanistan today, Vice President Joe Biden wanted to talk about our enemies, but not those in Afghanistan. He wanted to talk about Pakistan.

I understand that Pakistan is a nuclear country, but really, on the day that Operation Moshtarak descends on Majah, Afghanistan, he should have kept quiet...saved it for a few more days, or...at least acknowledged that at the minute he is once again gaffing, our finest are doing the job that few want to do.

Biden and Obama sat in the Senate and voted against everything that would have helped President Bush end Iraq quicker, perhaps make greater strides in Afghanistan and take care of Iran. Perhaps had he taken the Taliban more seriously, Pakistan would not on the burner at this moment.

Democrat resistance is the reason this country did not fight a full-out war with gusto. They sniped and threatened and called Bush a war monger. It is amazing he was able to accomplish what he did. Bush walked on eggshells after Liberals deserted the ship and cried "Bush lied."

Just a mention, was all Biden had to do, before he flipped off Afghanistan. This foolish Vice President, supposedly a foreign policy expert, is wrong all the time

As Michael Rubin shows, Biden has fared no better when it comes to Iran. According to Rubin:
Biden's unyielding pursuit of "engagement" with Iran for more than a decade has made it easier for Tehran to pursue its nuclear program, while his partisan obsession with thwarting the Bush administration has led him to oppose tough sanctions against hard-liners in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. (more excellent commentary at PowerLineBlog)
Going back to 2005, "Biden accused of 'double talk' on Iran. This from Jerome Corsi:
...Biden's words should be assessed in the context of his "long track record of appeasement and double talk on the Iran nuclear risk."

"The mullahs have known that Biden is their No. 1 go-to guy in the Senate whenever they want their bidding done to fool the American people," Corsi charges.

In his book, Corsi names Biden, along with Democratic Sens. John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton as recipients of funds from the "pro-mullah lobby" in the U.S.

While there always has been debate over whether to engage or isolate rogue regimes, Biden's concilatory approach to Tehran is especially dangerous, asserts Corsi.

"He's being played for a fool and doesn't recognize that that strategy failed in North Korea, and it's going to fail here again," he said. "What's he going to do, act surprised when the mullahs make a bomb?"
He once referred to Afghanistan and Pakistan as the "superhighway of terror"...where his helicopter was "forced down" "with a three-star general and three senators at 10,500 feet in the middle of those mountains." Sounds like the then Senator saw some action from the Taliban, doesn't it? Maybe the aircraft was underfire, but...no. There was snowstorm. The helicopter landed safely. No one was hurt. The enemy was huddled in some cave and likely didn't know these big bad boys of the US Senate (Sens. Hagel and Kerry) were in their area.

National Review has a good article summing up Every-Which-Way Joe and his exercises in "folly and self-contradiction."
As Biden so frequently pointed out on the campaign trail, a powerful vice president can be “very dangerous.” This is especially the case when a vice president has a track record like Joe Biden’s.
I can't top that.

Biden Motorcade Accident: Biden Motorcade Fatal Accident: VP Safely back in Washington

Vice President Biden's motorcade was involved in a fatal accident this morning, in which a man died.

Biden had already returned to the D.C. area from a Veterans Day event at Fort Lewis, Washington yesterday. The accident happened in Temple Hills, Maryland, after the vehicles were flown back for storage.

Biden was not in the "armored SUV or limousine," or at the scene at the time of the crash. This report says the victim was a pedestrian. Another report says the pedestrian "was struck by the limousine and a Chevrolet Suburban." A secret service spokesman:

Because of their heavy armor, the limousine and Suburban have trickier handling characteristics than ordinary vehicles, Wiley said. He said both drivers had completed the agency's "protective operator's driving course," which is required before an employee is allowed behind the wheel of an armored vehicle.
He said an investigation overseen by Park Police will include an autopsy and toxicology tests to determine whether the man had consumed drugs or alcohol before the incident. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center, Schlosser said.
A spokesman for the U.S. Park Police:
...the crash happened at 2:27 a.m. on Wednesday in Temple Hills, Md., at the intersection of Suitland Parkway and Naylor Road. The victim, whose name was not released because his next of kin had not been notified, was pronounced dead at Prince George’s Hospital on Wednesday morning, Schlosser said.
The circumstances of the accident, such as the color of the traffic light and the speed of the vehicles, were unclear but the Park Police was investigating.

Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley said the employees involved in the accident remained at the scene and administered first aid to the man until an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

As is customary Secret Service policy, the armored vehicles were flown to Fort Lewis on a military aircraft for the Tuesday event. They returned to the Air Force base in Maryland on Wednesday morning and the Secret Service employees were driving west along the Suitland Parkway to return them to a secure storage facility in D.C., which Wiley declined to name.
The name of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Notice that the accident happened in the wee, early hours of the morning. The Hill didn't get this report out until 1:09 p.m. - the earliest report I've found.

Rush Limbaugh Chris Wallace Part 3: Limbaugh NFL Cowardice Biden Palin (video)

Below is the video of Part 3 of Chris Wallace's interview with Rush Limbaugh. See Part 1 here. See Part 2 here.

Pull-out quotes from Part 3:

WALLACE: Finally, some politics. You predict a possible blood bath for Democrats in 2010.

RUSH: I really do. I know that there is an eruption waiting to happen at the ballot box. I know that a majority of the people in this country are opposed to every single major agenda item that Obama has proposed and is trying to get passed.

The mainstream media doesn't do it, doesn't know it. They think they need a visa to go to Missouri. You know, they -- they're not in touch with what's happening out -- and in fact, if they find out that there's this kind of angst, they look at the voters with contempt -- "Well, you're not sophisticated to understand how brilliant Obama is and how magical his agenda" -- they don't want any part of it.

And it's going to be bigger than anybody thinks, especially -- especially -- if health care gets passed, and if they get cap and trade, and they start going down this global warming fiasco track and get something passed on that. There will be a revolt at the polls.

WALLACE: If you had to bet now, does Barack Obama win re- election in 2012?

RUSH: If I had to bet now, he will not.

Joe Biden and AARP audience member
They’ll be a deal in there so there’s competition, so what you’ll have in there is you’ll have the ability to go in there and say, ‘Now look, this is the policy I want. This is the one,” Biden said. And those people who can’t afford to get in there, up to a certain income, we’re going to subsidize them, you get in there and we’ll help you pay for it,” Biden said

2008-What a long, strange year it's been

Cross Posted at The Lonely Conservative

Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, liberals and moderates can all agree that 2008 was an interesting year, to say the least. Who would have thought the New York Football Giants would have bested the New England Patriots in the Superbowl? If you thought that would be the strangest thing to happen this year you don’t follow politics too closely.

2008 kicked off in the midst of the Presidential primary season. Democrats bickered over who cared more about the impoverished and who wanted our troops out of Iraq sooner. Republicans went back and forth, each claiming to be the most conservative, while Republican voters kept wondering how they could channel Ronald Reagan. It was all but assumed that Hillary Clinton would be the nominee of the Democratic Party while the Republican field was wide open. Mike Huckabee did well with Christians and John McCain did well with Democrats and the New York Times.

Some Romney supporters were screaming “It’s the economy stupid!” and “Never nominate the candidate endorsed by the New York Times!” but much to their chagrin, Charlie Crist spoke, John McCain became the Republican nominee and Rudy Giulianni’s Florida vacation came to an abrupt end. In the mean time New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was brought down by a hooker. Hillary Clinton was fighting for her life against Barack Obama and the Main Stream Media throughout the spring. She vowed to take things all the way to the convention, and who could blame her? She was going up against a rival who began his presidential campaign almost immediately after being elected to his first term as a US Senator. But just as John McCain was the media’s darling before going up against the New Messiah, Hillary and her supporters finally understood what conservatives have complained about for years. There is media bias! Poor Hillary couldn’t catch a break, and Bubba didn’t help.

The media helped propel Barack Obama to the top of the Democratic ticket. Gas prices soared over the summer while the Democrats and John McCain railed against the obscene profits of oil companies. Showing how little he knows about the economy, Barack Obama swore he would fund his goodies with a windfall profits tax on the evil oil companies. Republicans spent the summer wishing for a primary do-over. The junior senator from Illinois travelled abroad over the summer where he announced we are all citizens of the world and under his leadership America will soon become a beautiful collectivist utopia. Thousands of German concert goers cheered The One while listening to a free rock concert and swilling beer. J

John McCain kept a low profile until the end of August when he announced Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. The world was stunned while conservative rejoiced! Maybe John McCain did have a conservative bone in his body! They finally had something other than his heroic war record to cheer about. Conservatives found a reason to go to the polls in November and wouldn’t even have to be drunk to do so! John McCain actually pulled ahead of Barack Obama in the polls. McCain’s pick of Sarah Palin was so brilliant that the left was enraged and the media went into a frenzy. Reporters and investigators were air-dropped into Palin’s home town of Wasilla, Alaska to dissect every aspect of the woman’s life. They spent more time digging into Sarah Palin’s past in a week than they did to Barack Obama in two years.

Feminists loathed her for not aborting her baby when she learned the child would have Down’s Syndrome. Yes, Sarah Palin was a conservative dream. A really middle class American who put her money where her mouth is and didn’t just talk the talk. Unfortunately for Palin, she had to go on television and defend John McCain’s record in her early interviews. That would be a hard, if not impossible task for any good conservative. The networks’ editing of her answers didn’t help either. But Sarah Palin didn’t let it stop her. She wasn’t there to please Washington’s elite media. Barack Obama’s choice of Joe Biden as a running mate really wasn’t a joke and the two went on the stump together.

Gaffe after gaffe were ignored by the adoring media, while every aspect of Sarah Palin’s life was put under a microscope. Barack Obama’s “God D*mn America” pastor was ignored but it was reported that Sarah Palin speaks in tongues. Going to 57 US states was suddenly not impossible, yet a corruption-fighting, self-made governor with an 80% approval rating inexplicably became a liability. The media’s love for their Chosen One grew deeper with each passing day. One famous commentator admitted on live television to a thrilling physical reaction when the debonnaire democrat spoke. This love affair was a sight to behold. William Shakespeare himself couldn’t have conjured up such complete devotion.

After the government rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and the resulting failure of Lehman Brothers, John McCain failed to defend his and President Bush’s proven record of urging more oversight of Fannie and Freddie. Instead he blamed the whole mess on greed. Then Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson appeared on TV to announce that if we the people didn’t immediately hand over nearly a trillion dollars to him that the economy would immediately collapse. The strategy of manufactured crisis was coming to fruition right before our eyes and Republicans played right into their hands.

President Bush suddenly befriended Democrats even though they persisted in calling him names. John McCain announced he was suspending his campaign until an economic rescue bill agreement could be reached in Washington. He called on Barack Obama to join him. Barack Obama and his staff had high fives all around in celebration of their upcoming victory. Mr. McCain went to Washington and did…..absolutely nothing! He didn’t insist on an immediate reduction in capital gains taxes to keep capital flowing into the US economy. He didn’t insist on suspending mark to market accounting rules which would have eased the balance sheets of our financial institutions. Heavens no! Had he done that he may have appeared to be conservative.

The maverick whose campaign theme was “I am not George W. Bush” went along with George W. Bush and sidekick Hank Paulson like a devoted puppy. 70% of the public was against the rescue plan, so naturally it passed with bipartisan support, save for a few lonely conservative republicans and moderate democrats. The economy immediately went into a tailspin and Americans watched their life savings disappear into thin air. John McCain continued to blast greed while Barack Obama’s poll numbers went up. Barack Obama kept at it, blaming the economic crisis on the failed economic policies of the past eight years. He and the media forgot all about Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid.

The drum beat from the Democrats and the media played on and on. It was the Republican’s fault and so what if Fannie and Freddie gave more money to Obama and the Democrats than anyone else? So what if Democrats were complicit in the failure of the GSE’s or made statements that caused a bank to fail and the entire US insurance industry to take a one day stock loss of 30% and up. The public had no need to know that useless information. Heck, they didn’t even know that Democrats have controlled both houses of Congress since 2006. Yes, it was a good year to be a Democrat. Had it been reported that Republicans failed to stop the Democrats, perhaps things would have turned out differently, but alas, it was not to be. Then Mr. Obama showed up in the yard of Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher who had the nerve to ask him a question.

The media and the left went after Joe the Plumber with a vengeance not seen since Sarah Palin hit the campaign trail. They had to work overtime in their attempts to destroy and discredit two conservatives at the same time. Even coastal conservative elites with ivy league degrees joined the chorus against Sarah Palin and Joe the Plumber. (Let’s hope those “conservatives” are enjoying the DC cocktail party circuit!)

How dare these two regular people show up and act all normal, middle class and conservative!? What happened to the big tent? The elites even turned on their own moderate maverick John McCain when he started pretending to be conservative. Granted, he was sending mixed messages, like calling Barack Obama a socialist and in the next breath promising to bailout delinquent homeowners. But hey, he was convinced by the media and Colin Powell that Americans only like liberals.

A few maverick reporters had the nerve to ask some tough questions of Obama and Biden. Let’s just say they learned their lesson. Newspaper journalists whose editors failed to endorse Barack Obama were kicked off his campaign plane. They learned their lesson, too. But Obama promised a new transparency in government. As expected, the media lapped it up. Sarah Palin finally broke free of the McCain campaign’s bubble of suppression at the same time Joe Biden was put in the corner after one too many gaffes.

There are only so many ”paying higher taxes is patriotic” statements a politician can make before the voters start to catch on. Conservatives flocked to McCain rallies to see Sarah Palin. Despite McCain’s mixed messages it seemed there was hope for his campaign. The stock market rallied just before the election, only to suffer deep losses after the results came in. Job losses in November soared higher than we’ve seen in a generation. Nobody can figure out what investors and business owners know that the media doesn’t.

Barack Hussein Obama will be sworn in as the next President of the United States. The world now knows what most conservatives believed all along, that America is not a hateful racist country that would never vote for a black man who is willing to throw family members and life long friends under the proverbial bus when it suits him.

Gay Americans aren’t convinced we’re now a nice nation, but again, sometimes supporters have to be thrown under the bus in the name of unity and hopeandchange. President elect Obama wasted no time in putting together his new team. Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich also got busy trying to sell Obama’s senate seat to the highest bidder. So busy, in fact, that the poor fellow didn’t even have time to visit his barber. Democrats across the land stepped out of character to denounce a fellow Democrat caught up in scandal. Americans were surprised again when Barack Obama announced he would appoint Hillary Rodham Clinton to be the next Secretary of State. They weren’t surprised that nobody’s concerned about former President Bill Clinton’s funny money dealings with foreigners. No, they were surprised at Caroline Kennedy’s unexpected desire to be appointed to Hillary’s senate seat. But hey, now that we’ve elected the most inexperienced candidate for President the sky’s the limit. So what if she hasn’t held a full time job, she’s a Kennedy! We’ll have to wait and see how that plays out.

The accidental governor of New York, David Paterson has bigger things to worry about. He’s presiding over an enormous budget deficit (unless you compare it to California) and wants to raise taxes on everything from iPods to malt liquor. He’s convinced that new and creative taxes will lure new business to New York State.

He should just wait until Obama takes office and then stand in line with his hand out. Bailouts continue with more to come in 2009. The Bush administration caved in to the UAW, oops…the auto companies, giving about $17 billion to GM and Chrysler to tide them over until the real Santa Claus comes to town in January. And it isn’t just the auto companies who can expect to be stimulated by the stimuli promised by our President elect. He promises to create 3 million jobs by taking money out of the private sector (aka - taxation) and “investing” it in technologies that aren’t profitable for the private sector.

Let’s hope it works, since he also said he would bankrupt the coal industry. (Be sure to save your energy bills from 2008, just for the sake of nostalgia.) Despite scientific evidence that solar activity causes our climate to change, Mr. Obama has promised to spend…oops again…invest billions of taxpayer dollars to combat man made global warming. This after the coldest fall we’ve seen in a number of years. But scientists be damned! Carbon is bad and we must stop it! We’ll have to figure out how to make plants grow without carbon at a later date, after we figure out how to pay for the trillions of dollars we need to spend eliminating carbon and ”saving” our economy.

Things aren’t all bad for conservatives. The surge in Iraq produced results beyond even Barack Obama’s wildest dreams. There are so few Republicans left conservatives no longer have to spend much time defending them. Gas prices are lower now than we’ve seen in years. (Enjoy it while it lasts as any hopes of increased domestic oil production are dashed.) And with any luck Joe Biden will receive enough media coverage to offer some comic relief for the next few years, we’re sure going to need it. Happy New Year!

Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Coal

"So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It's just that it will bankrupt them." Senator Barack Obama
Cross-posted by Susan at Wake up America

It wasn't long ago that Joe Biden made the news appearing to contradict Barack Obama's stance on clean coal and I see this morning, via Gateway Pundit and NewsBusters, that there is an audio that has been released where Barack Obama tells the San Francisco Chronicle (SF Gate) he is willing to see the coal industry go bankrupt. YouTube URL here and video below:

Text:
Let me sort of describe my overall policy. What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there. I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted. That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches. The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a (sic) ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it. So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can. It's just that it will bankrupt them.
Looks like Biden wasn't contradicting Obama at all when his words were reported and shown on video.

Biden Bans ANOTHER Station - Interviewers Heat Up - Manager Sucks Up

Philadelphia's CBS affiliate interviews Joe Biden and cites a Washington Times article with this header: Biden routs campaign cash to family, their firms - Discloses $2 million in business arrangements. The Philadelphia station has been banned by Biden from future interviews, and the gossip-gal says the station manager is embarrassed by accusations that they practice hit journalism... like Fox News. Thanks to YouTube and BreitBartTV

Barbara West Interviews McCain: She Hits Hard - He Chuckles

Barbara West of Orlando's ABC affiliate WFTC, couldn't get an honest answer out of Joe Biden in her October 23rd interview with him. West interviewed McCain today and she asks some hard, and perhaps, some embarrassing questions. Observation: McCain answers, gets a few chuckles, doesn't whine or opine - doesn't storm off the set, doesn't cancel future interviews. See it here.

The American Democrat Party: Culture of Death

I have been saying this for years and folks just laughed and some just laughed it off. Some said that this too shall pass. To me, those that laughed for whatever reason are still in a state of insanity due to their purposeful neglect. Recently, J.R. Dunn wrote a column entitled, "Democide". In that piece, in part:
"Over the past fifty years, something on the order of a half-million Americans have been killed by liberal policies." That line appears to have gotten to people, as it should. Among the many welcome comments on my piece on Christopher Buckley, a number both on AT and elsewhere referred to that statement -- my contention that liberalism is not only a failed ideology, but a deadly one, an ideology that kills, and kills in large numbers. Many of the comments called it "incredible", "unbelievable" and "shocking". That's in no way difficult to understand. Achieving awareness of the lethal nature of liberalism's excesses is much the same as coming to realize that your friendly, familiar neighborhood is actually overrun by vampires. [...]
Most of you that know me know that I am undertaking a project that proves the above beyond a reasonable doubt. The proponents of American Liberalism, no matter their stature in life and position are directly responsible for not only killing millions dying of Malaria, they have murdered entire generations of "voters"...they died of abortion. They are directly responsible for the deaths and wounding of American and Allied Forces in several wars and Police Actions, Iraq and Afghanistan being in the present tense. I loathe them all. They disgust me. They cannot be trusted. Their ideologies have been attempted in many Nations and those principles of which they stand resulted in entire populations to be enslaved to the governments under which they lived and live and those governments have failed time and time again. Their system does not work. Period. It never has and it never will.

Slavery - that is what the Democrat Party of the USA is all about. A historical search will bear that out, especially before, during and after the American Civil War. But, that won't stop them. It is all about Power to these people. Nothing else matters. If our Troops are killed, maimed or wounded, they could care less. I have seen it first hand. If they can enslave the American Population, the more Power they will have. Barack Obama is the Shining Example of the Culture of Death. He supports infanticide, no matter how he tries to spin it. He voted FOR infanticide and that is a matter of public record. He and his Goons can deny it all they want to...facts are facts and the record is the record. SPIN THAT.

The Vatican has declared the American Democrat Party as the Culture of Death. Joe Biden has been practically excommunicated from The Church. Nancy Pelosi was heavily and handily chastised by her Archbishop over her rewriting Vatican principles and history. Nancy now knows that history didn't start the day she was hatched. The American Democrat Party is directly responsible for the MILLIONS of deaths following their cowardly retreat from Vietnam. They are directly responsible for American deaths in Vietnam. That is a historical fact. They can deny all they want to and spin as much as they want to but I bet they have a hard time explaining it all when the demons come.
[...] It will come as no news to readers of this site that liberal policies tend to fail. But some of them fail catastrophically. And when they do, they kill. They kill in large numbers. They have been killing for decades, and they will continue to kill for as long as we allow it. The process is called democide, the murder of a populace by its own government. It can occur through malice, or indifference, or through incompetence. Almost always, it is instigated by an ideology -- fascism, Nazism, communism... and liberalism. According to Dr. R.J. Rummel, the sole scholar of democide (you'd think there would be droves of researchers working on such a critical topic -- but you'd be wrong), 262 million people have died by such means over the past century. Against that number, a half-million is a bagatelle, a drop in the bucket. But it happened in our country. It happened in America. [...]
We can stop it and we can change things but we have to actually ACT and DO something and hopefully, we do it via the ballot box and getting our Vertical Alignment all squared away with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. For further reading, feel free to consult a minor collection of writings on the subject of Democrats and Terrorists.
