Malaysian Christians Banned from Saying Allah

In Malaysia, Christians use the word Allah to refer to the almighty God. Muslims there are offended, and now Christians will be prosecuted for doing so under a ruling known as the Malay Muslim supremacy. See a video below.

The dispute came out in the open after Malaysia's internal security ministry ruled recently the term Allah -- long used by Christians in Malaysia to refer to God -- could no longer be used by non-Muslims.

"The term Allah was used to refer to God by Arabic-speaking Christians before Arabic-speaking Muslims existed," he said.

This poses a huge problem for the Catholic Weekly newspaper, which will lose its publishing permit if it continues to print the word Allah. The publisher has filed a lawsuit "challenging the state order." 

The Evangelical Church of Borneo in the state of Sabah, Malaysia has been ordered to stop importing Christian books that contain the word Allah. They have also filed a lawsuit, saying that "The Christian usage of the word Allah predates Islam."

The Malaysia Insider quotes "Hadi" who as a spokesman for PAS (sorry, I cannot identify Hadi or PAS) said PAS is backing the use of Catholics using Allah, and said "it is consistent with he federal Constitution and Islamic principles." Hadi warned, though that the "word Allah should not be abused to confuse the public."

“PAS would like to state that based on Islamic principles, the use of the word Allah by the people of the Abrahamic faiths such as Christianity and Judaism, is acceptable,” said Hadi

This article also says that, "last week the High Court ruled that the Catholic church had a constitutional right to publish the word "Allah in the Bahasa Malaysia edition of its Herald newspaper." I do not know how that fits with the ban or the lawsuits mentioned above.
