Jim Simpson Editorial in The Washington Times

My friend Jim Simpson at Truth & Consequences has an editorial in The Washington Times today. If you haven't visited Truth & Consequences, then you may have read Jim's work as a contributor, here at Maggie's Notebook. If you view illegal immigration, amnesty and lobbyists for the same, as a issue, then you need to read Jim's revealing piece: La Raza and Americans. Pinged by Friday's Feast #145 from Colloquium. Excerpt: Appetizer Name something you think is “the best.”"The Sopranos" is the best series ever in the history of television.(You knew I was going to say that, didn't you?) I can't believe there are only two episodes left! . . .

Stop the ACLU Blogburst Reports on More Tuberculosis and Terrorism Suspects

Stop the ACLU has up two important piece today: ACLU Fights to Expose Public to Deadly Disease: Maricopa County, AZ Sheriff Joe Arpaio's efforts to keep a tuberculosis-infected patient in a county sanitarium and out of the public arena. The ACLU has filed suit on behalf of the patient, Robert Daniels, who is believed to have an "extreme multi-drug resistant tuberculosis. If at First You Don't Succeed..., announcing a new ACLU lawsuit filed against a Boeing subsidary for allegedly transporting terrorism suspects to shores unknown, under the Extraordinary Rendition Program. For more ACLU background on the Boeing story: ACLU Sues Boeing Subsidiary over "Terrorism Suspect" Transfers, posted today here at Maggie's Notebook. Technorati Tags: , , , , , , , , , ,

ACLU Sues Over "Terrorism Suspect" Transfers

H/T to blog @ MoreWhat.com

The WashingtonPost.com reports that a Boeing Company subsidiary has flown "terrorism suspects," accompanied by CIA agents, to "secret overseas locations."

The ACLU is suing a Boeing subsidiary on behalf of three "terrorism suspects," no lawsuit against Boeing or the U.S. government, and the subsidiary is unnamed.

From The WashingtonPost.com:

The cases involve the alleged mistreatment of Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian citizen, in July 2002 and January 2004; ElkassimBritel, an Italian citizen, in May 2002; and Ahmed Agiza, an Egyptian citizen, in December 2001,...
The ACLU says the suspects were apprehended under the U.S. government's "extraordinary rendition program...."
There's plenty of information published about these three men. Sifting through it will likely not yield much, as it all depends on who you believe.

The ACLU has had at least one previous failure at attempting to successfully sue due to the Extraordinary Rendition Program - this on behalf of Khaled El-Masri, a German citizen born in Kuwait to Lebanese parents. El-Masri is reported to have relocated to Germany in 1985 and became a German citizen through marriage to a German woman, whom he divorced quickly and then married a Lebanese woman. If Wikipedia's reporting of the marriage and quick divorce, resulting in German citizenship, is correct, the ACLU ignored the first marriage, and reported only his marriage to a Lebanese woman - citizenship and two marriages within the period of one year. From the ACLU:
He became a German citizen in 1995, married in 1996 and has six young children.
It is believed that Khaled El-Masri's name may have been confused with Khalid al-Masri...or is it Khaled al-Masri? Indeed, international reporting on El-Masri's case seems to refer to El-Masri as al-Masri and then there's Khalid al-Masri referred to as Khaled Al-Masri. To further the conundrum, an online search for Khalid al-Masri links to GlobalSecurity.org profiling Khalid al-Masri as a recruiter for the al-Qaeda Hamburg cell based in Germany and led by Mohamed Atta - 9/11 hijacker of American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to crash into the World Trade Towers.

The question is, who isn't confused?

Some accounts of El-Masri's detention credit a German Intelligence Agent with secretly passing an El-Masri file to the U.S - however, these reports also seem to refer to the wrongly detained Khaled El-Masri as Khalid al-Masri. Then WorldPoliticsReview, in February 2007, reports Kahled Al-Masri Accused of Assault.... showing a photo of the person it seems is Khaled El-Masri, at least according to the ACLU. The article says:
...the headline had acquired a certain unintended irony as reports emerged that Masri himself had beaten up a social worker in his hometown of Neu-Ulm, leaving the man hospitalized for three days. The assault occurred on Monday, Jan. 29. According to a Feb. 2 report in the Südwest Presse newspaper, citing the local Neu-Ulm prosecutor's office: "Masri is supposed to have pulled the man by the hair and thrown him against a wall. Then he threw a table at him, punched him in the face and stomped on him."
This failed lawsuit... the ACLU's "landmark" lawsuit, was filed against George Tenet, former CIA Director, as well as the owners of a company providing private jet service to the CIA.

In May 2006 a U.S. Federal District Judge T. S. Ellis dismissed the ACLU lawsuit on El-Masri's behalf. The judge's decision was complicated by the fact that the U.S. seemingly acknowledged that El-Masri was mistakenly detained, but held that national security would be jeopardized by court proceedings.

In March 2007, The Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the 2006 dismissal. The ACLU is reported to be considering an appeal.

Back to the current lawsuit against a Boeing subsidiary and the concept of the Extraordinary Rendition Program:

A Google search brings up two ACLU links referring to the Extraordinary Rendition Program. The second link includes this teaser:
...Learn More About CIA Kidnapping..."

These are dire times. To say that life isn't fair, is I know, inadequate. But, then...life isn't fair. Perhaps it's inadequate to suggest asking the families of terrorism victims about things fair and unfair. Freedom isn't as simple as an ACLU lawsuit.

The US, UN, Iran and 2008

By Stanford Matthews Blog @ MoreWhat.com

The following is certainly an oversimplified appraisal. But the order of the news reports lent itself to an almost automatic response. The events themselves may have played out somewhat differently. At least as far as timing is concerned. But nevertheless there chronological publishing times may be in proper order. The point is this.

We all know that Iran was on President Bush's 'D' list. They were not likely to get invited to any parties. And if you are old enough to remember the dagger in the heart of Jimmy Carter's Administration or had some history classes in school, you are familiar with 444 days worth of agony suffered by Americans at the hands of Iranian hospitality.

Then there was the Reagan Administration basking in the glory of the return of the American hostages and later the Iran-Contra scandal and I'm getting crazy just thinking about it. That is over twenty-five years ago and the process has not improved. It appears more complicated than the simple explanation that every country is looking out for their own agenda and benefit.

With the Memorial Day concluding earlier this week, thoughts of WWII and the greatest generation did not escape most Americans. Citizens of many other countries are sure to have been reminded also. When I think of our country's contribution to winning that war alongside so many other allied nations, another striking reminder enters my thoughts.

At the end of WWII the League of Nations was replaced by the United Nations whose stated mission was to intervene in conflicts between nations and avoid future wars. It almost seems as though human beings were finally getting it right. Instead of a period of time of peaceful activity followed by the totally impractical practice of armed conflict, we would solve our differences in an organized group to eliminate the need for death and destruction in enormous quantities.

Let's review the latest success of this noble endeavor. As stated earlier, the sequence of the following reports is assumed to be relatively chronological.

Iraq's Sadr blasts US-Iranian meeting

BAGHDAD, May 30 (UPI) -- Among those who blasted the meeting is Iranian-backed Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, who said in a statement Wednesday that the U.S.-Iranian talks in Baghdad Monday constituted "interference in Iraqi affairs."

So the first thing that happens is the cleric known as Sadr throws his two cents worth in 'dissin' the meeting. One man who has done everything he can to cause more bloodshed in Iraq is complaining about a meeting between the US and Iran. Could be so simple as he doesn't want anything solved for it ups his value as a 'somebody' in Iraq.

Talking With Our Enemies Is Smart Policy

The Moderate Voice - By Jeb Koogler. The recent meeting between American and Iranian officials in Baghdad effectively brings to an end the Bush administration’s use of ‘enforced ...

Then we have another opinion apparently applauding an approach that differs from the typical 'cowboy George' routine that one could characterize as shoot now, ask questions later or the old Teddy Roosevelt adage of walk softly and carry a big stick. This second philosophy has a tendency of provoking more attitude from hostile foes and delay the desired victory outcome.

Iran official rules out halting enrichment ahead of nuclear talks ...

International Herald Tribune, France - In another sign of defiance, hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasted that Iran has become so strong that no adversary can defeat it. ...

Which of course prompted the response above from the Iranians as well as another one bragging about no one would be crazy enough to challenge the great and powerful Iranian military. Ok, where did we here that Mother of all wars speech before. Yo, yo, Prez AJ, over powering the Iraqi forces was not a problem. Keeping the nutcases contained has presented a problem, but foreign armies, not a big deal. Does he have that little man syndrome?

Diplomats: West rejected Iran nuke concession

MSNBC - In another sign of defiance, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasted that his country’s military has become so strong that no adversary would risk an ...

And the tennis ball lands in the other court and we have renewed talk about regime change. So the long delayed question is where the hell is the United Nations, again, and why does it even exist anymore. Not like their weren't plenty of reasons to ask for it to be dissolved before.

Getting Serious About Iran: For Regime Change

Commentary, NY - To the contrary, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the recently elected president, announced that the Islamic Republic was reneging on its suspension agreement and ...

Afghanistan, Iraq, maybe Iran, Russia and new nukes, India talking more nukes, US shielding EU and the circus just keeps coming to town. Is no other country the least bit interested in taking one more shot at using the UN for what it was designed for? I am sure anyone reading this may feel compelled to complain about my suggestions. Consider that the UN is useless and it probably needs to be dissolved. But now would be a great time to give that 'body' one last chance to actually do something useful. There are major players involved in dealing with the current generation of conflict and resolution. There is no better time to get everyone involved and in a position to make the UN work before it is entirely abandoned. Even a loser is worth one more try. As long as the cards are on the table and every one knows how to play.

In the words of Larry the Cable Guy, 'get her done'. If it flops, get rid of it.

Thompson on the Run

Town Hall, DC - At an event for the Electronic Data Systems Corp. on April 27, he said he supported helping Iranians overthrow President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government. ...

Heading into the 2008 elections, it would be nice to resolve some of the world's issues since no one knows who will be in the White House and the example above is not ready for nonsense by his statements. That may apply to one or more other candidates but some would be a definite disadvantage in that regard.

A Muslim Who Should be Read by Everybody

Unfortunately, we will only be able to read what has already been written, for a very brave voice of freedom, Tashbih Sayyed died last Thursday, May 24, 2007. Hat Tip to American Thinker and Jihad Watch.

Hasselbeck and Rosie Exchange "Forgiveness" Emails - Darn!

On The View today, Elisabeth Hasselbeck admits that, this past weekend, she and Rosie exchanged emails discussing "forgiveness." I'm trying to remember what it was that Elizabeth needed forgiving. The duo was discussing important issues last week, such as "America is the terrorist" in Iraq (Rosie's view) or "America is not the terrorist in Iraq" (Elizabeth's view). If Rosie was asking for forgiveness, then of course, that makes sense because Rosie has the juvenile and mean-spirited manner of not "fighting fair." She attempted not to fight fair that day, and you can't blame her, because it works for her, usually. If Elisabeth was asking for forgiveness, then she has lost any legitimacy she had with me because, well, that's just lame. She is a grown-up. She did a grown-up's job...what she was paid to do, and she did it with integrity that day. She was mad, said what she wanted to say and didn't let Rosie get away with her sanctified death stare - willing Hasselbeck to shut-up. If they were both seeking forgiveness, then we just don't need to hear about it. It ruins Elisabeth's triumph, as well as those of us who really didn't care all that much, but naturally wanted Elisabeth to prevail, because, hey - we're talking about our troops here. Sigh! Lebanese Refugee Camp Harbors Achille Lauro Terrorist

Lebanon Violence: Lebanese troops fought new gun battles with Islamic extremists in the north of the country while the plumes of black smoke rose from the Palestinian refugee camp of Nahr Al-Bared. (Photo Credit: Ramzi Haidar, AFP/Getty Images)

Do you remember the 1985 murder of American, Leon Klinghoffer, aboard the cruise ship, Achille Lauro? Klinghoffer (69), Jewish and wheelchair bound, was shot and killed by Palestinian terrorists. Some of the ship's staff were forced to dump his body over the side. Mr. and Mrs. Klinghoffer were celebrating their 36th wedding anniversary.

Today, an Achille Lauro hijacker is reported to be alive and well inside the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp in Lebanon (shown in photo above). While Wikipedia shows that Bassam al-Ashker was paroled in Italy in 1991, and died in February 2004, it seems he may be alive, is attempting to fulfill his mission and is boastful of fighting Americans:

"I organize the training of young Palestinian recruits who we send to fight the Americans alongside the Iraqi resistance," Ashker told reporters. "I have even fought them myself in Fallujah and Ramadi," two rebel bastions west of Baghdad.
The hijacking of the Achille Lauro was masterminded by Abu Abbas (also known as Muhammad Zaidan) - a name well-know to those of us who pay attention to the War on Terror. He was the founder and leader of the Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF). As the Achille Lauro passengers were freed, Abass escaped (???) capture, fled Italy, and was sentenced in absentia. He ran straight to Saddam Hussein, who personally protected him and afforded him safe harbor. Abass died in U.S. Custody in Baghdad in March 2004.

Reports are that Ashker spent 14 years in Iraq after his 1991 parole, before relocating to Nahr al-Bared.

Beat Cancer - Join An Army of Bloggers

Trackback URL for this entry: http://haloscan.com/tb/maggiesnotebook/947269827375147885

I'm glad to have the opportunity to tell you about a new assault on cancer - An Army of Bloggers. This "assault" is in the form of a blogroll, a well-known and handy tool for many of us, and in this case, a weapon to fight the menace that changes lives forever.

My commitment to An Army of Bloggers is to continue supporting The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Project - For the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway., Ste. 250, Dallas, TX 75244, or call 1-888-888-3317. I will increase my donation, and I will be proud to make a note on the memo line of the check: An Army of Bloggers.

Perhaps you are an ardent blog reader, but do not have a website. Please don't let that stop you. Just make a donation to the cancer project of your choice, because you, too, can join us by designating "An Army of Bloggers" on your check.

Here's how to join in this fight - direct from An Army of Bloggers headquarters:

Cancer is no respecter of race, religion, social status, income or profession. It is an insidious disease that robs people of a quality of life and too often, of life itself. This blog has one purpose, and one purpose only, to enroll as many bloggers in An Army Of Bloggers as possible and to encourage them to make an annual contribution to fighting cancer. The Rules for membership are simple, put the logo and blogroll on your blog, send a donation to a cancer program of any kind and post about it. It would be helpful if you write in the "memo field" of your check the following "Donated By The Army Of Bloggers." Help spread the word, help beat this s.o.b. into the ground. If you are a blogger, join the blogroll and make a donation. Leave a comment too if you would be so kind as to whom you donated to. Please leave the address and name of the charity in your comment (you don't need to name the amount). Please, if everyone helps this disease can eventually be whipped.
And this from G.M. Roper who formulated the blogroll:
"This Blog and accompanying Blogroll is dedicated Pamela Roper Clark, my beloved sister who passed away in 1990 from ovarian cancer. By putting the power of the blogosphere to work, we hope to make a citizens push to conquer this dread disease."
The rules for membership are simple:
1) Add the code to your blogroll. You'll find it here in the left-hand column.

2) Make a post on your blog supporting research to cure cancer and to announce your membership in this worthy fight.

3) Make a comment on this post giving the cancer research or charity you will support annually. The amount of your gift is entirely up to you, but the more you can afford, the better it will be.

4) Non bloggers can particpate too by making a comment and listing the cancer research facility/organization or charity you will support annually.

Here are some suggested research organizations and charities, beginning with one very special to me: Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Cancer Institute, The Lung Cancer Alliance, The Cancer Research Institute, The American Cancer Society, Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation of America/Cancer Research Foundation of America. Or, your favorite what ever it is.

Russians Mourn the Loss of Free Press

Trackback URL for this entry: http://haloscan.com/tb/maggiesnotebook/1514266793645659671

Putin enjoys a "cuppa," while this flattering photo of him is taken by the free press privileges of the BBC. Photo courtesy of the BBC.

In Russia, the people silently mourn the murder of their democracy at the hands of President Vladimir Putin. After the killing of beloved Russian journalist, Anna Politkovskaya in 2006, the International Herald Tribune put it this way:

I am convinced that her killer was, first and foremost, the paucity of freedoms in Russia. The lack of freedom killed freedom - this is where the sad logic of her killing comes from, no matter who is behind it.

Lack of freedom spawns lawlessness: Russia has fostered numerous vindictive, unpunished people indignant that someone dares to point a finger at them and to say that their actions are criminal. At the same time, authoritarian power always fragments into clans, and the accusations of an independent journalist can be a priceless weapon in the battle of clans or for the liquidation of political rivals.
And then this:
Hundreds of people who came to say farewell to Anna looked not only crushed, but also helpless. The mourners were shown their real place, as people without rights, who will be told only what the authorities want them to know.
And this::
...at least twelve journalists have been killed in contract-style slayings. No one has been brought to justice in eleven of the twelve cases.
And another important piece on how unattended freedom is killing freedom in Russia.

For thoughts on Venezuelans fighting in their streets for free press, read: how Danny Glover and Hugo Chavez give a "nose-thumb" to freedom.

This a day to remember just how precious are our freedoms and to fiercely battle back against those who would hastily feed the gators, hoping they will eat him last.

A closing thought on how we make freedom ours:
You can only protect your liberties in this world by protecting the other man's freedom. You can only be free if I am free. Clarence Darrow

Venezuelans Fight the Loss of Free Press

Freedom across the globe dwindles as Danny Glover steps-in and cozies-up with Chavez, snatching the Bolivars right out of the hands of the people.

Venezuelans are in the streets fighting for free press. Their dictator, Hugo Chavez, has taken-down the most popular television station there, and replaced it with a state-sponsored station.

Glover thumbed his nose at Venezuelan liberties (he need not worry, American troops are protecting his) and aligned himself with deep pockets and dictators, revealing his true lack of concern for freedom, for the poor and the down-trodden.

Glover snagged his $20-$30 Million (depending on whose reporting you believe) before Venezuelan actors, anchors, agents, writers, camera crews, and grips lost their jobs. Three thousand people out of work and a station operating for 53 years is gone. Glover will make two movies in Venezuela, but no, the jobs for those in television will not be replaced by Glover's ventures. On Glover's love of America:

Glover was a signatory to "The Conscience of the World," a public letter signed by 160 artists which condemned the War in Iraq, and pledged support for the Communist dictatorship of Cuba. He also supports the Maoist group Not In Our Name (NION), which "pledges resistance to endless war, detentions and roundups, [and] attacks on civil liberties," and is directed by members of the Revolutionary Communist Party.
As Glover attempts to add legitimacy to dictatorships, Chavez controls the military, the legislature, the courts, most private industry, including our American oil companies - he also controls former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

For thoughts on loss of free speech in Russia, read Russians Mourn the Loss of Free Press

Absurd Glimpses of Memorial Day 2007

Trackback URL for this entry: http://haloscan.com/tb/maggiesnotebook/7894576617828379820 So why look at the "absurd" and "disrespectful" on this Day set aside to honor valor and sacrifice? We need to know what these people are up to. Winston Churchill said "When the eagles are silent the parrots begin to jabber." Churchill also said: "Danger - if you meet it promptly and without flinching - you will reduce the danger by half. Never run away from anything. Never!" The parrots are screeching. It's time to stop flinching - meet them head-on and let this jabbering minority know that it will not take away our beloved traditions in the name of civil liberty. Here's the absurd. A few quotes have been snatched from each below, (in context) but a link is provided to the original. Watchdog group protests military participation in Memorial Day activities from examiner.com:

Stone Mountain Park's Memorial Day weekend festivities are being criticized by a watchdog group for religious freedom that says the patriotic event also promotes Christianity. ...Americans United called for the military to make clear to the public that the weekend is not an official military event, to ensure that military events are not integrated into worship services or other religious activity, and to ensure that active-duty military personnel maintain compliance with constitutional requirements.
Memorial Day: Hijacked from WorldNetDaily by Robert Knight:
"...Sen. John Edwards, whose website supportthetroopsendthewar.com is urging people to crash Memorial Day ceremonies and parades with anti-war protests. He's even asking people to take pictures of it all and post them to his website. What nifty souvenirs! We're still waiting for the media outrage over this hijacking of a sacred day to honor the war dead. Can you imagine being a U.S. Marine and going out today on a mission in Fallujah, Iraq, searching for the killers in the latest civilian massacre,..."
Dishonoring the dead: No Memorial Day protests from UnionLeader.com:
Edwards urged Americans to use Memorial Day to protest the war in Iraq. Meanwhile, anti-war protesters across the country are planning to take Edwards' advice and turn out at Memorial Day parades tomorrow to protest the war, thus insulting the sacrifices of all who lost their lives and their innocence in the swirling desert sands of Iraq.
Edwards Calls for Protests on Memorial Day??!!?? from Wake up America:
While in the Senate, Edwards Voted YES on authorizing air strikes in Kosovo. (Mar 1999), Voted YES on allowing all necessary force in Kosovo. (May 1999), Voted YES on authorizing use of military force against Iraq. (Oct 2002) and Voted NO on $86 billion for military operations in Iraq & Afghanistan. (Oct 2003).
ACLU condemned for 'attacking' veterans memorials during time of war from OneNewsNow:
"The American Legion has announced that it is teaming up with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) and Liberty Legal Institute in a campaign to fight ACLU efforts to remove religious symbols from war memorials. The ACLU has already filed suit to remove crosses at veterans' memorials, like the Mt. Soledad cross in San Diego and the Sunrise Rock cross in the Mojave Desert, which is now covered by a box. "Let us see this claim for exactly what it is," Infranco continued. "These individuals assert that their being offended should override the public's desire to honor veterans as we have since the founding of our nation," he said.
Veterans go to battle for memorials from WorldNet Daily:
The American Legion and the Alliance Defense Fund will mark Memorial Day 2007 observances by launching a nationwide Defense of Veterans Memorials Project to fight secular attacks by the American Civil Liberties Union, atheists and others against veterans memorials – as exemplified by lawsuits against the Mt. Soledad National War Memorial in San Diego and the Mojave Desert Veterans Memorial. The American Legion, the largest wartime veterans organization in the world with 2.7million members in 15,000 posts, and the Alliance Defense Fund, believed to be the largest public interest legal firm defending freedom of religion with some 1,000 pro bono attorneys, are to formally announce and detail the Defense of Veterans Memorials Project
ACLU Observers Will Monitor Miami Beach Police During Holiday from NBC6.net South Florida:
The president of the Greater Miami ACLU chapter said the organization was concerned about the number of arrests made on the beach last Memorial Day weekend. The ACLU and NAACP have criticized Miami Beach police for "overzealous" DUI arrests.

MSM Protecting the ACLU? Where's the Headlines?

Trackback URL for this entry: http://haloscan.com/tb/maggiesnotebook/4477665067361089809 Just when you think the mainstream media cannot be less responsible than already demonstrated, cannot be more liberally biased than already evident, and cannot possibly flaunt their arrogance with any more vigor, another ACLU headline shows up missing. Here's what I see as irresponsible, liberally biased and completely arrogant: Charles Rust-Tierney, ** A former Virginia Chapter ACLU Chapter President ** An ACLU Board Member until the day of his arrest ** An employee of the Washington, D.C. Public Defender Service (since 1990) working exclusively with mentally ill clients ** Actively advocated, on behalf of the ACLU, to DISALLOW use of computer blocking-software to protect children against pornography in Public Libraries. ** An Arlington, VA Youth Coach (President of the Arlington Little League) ** A spouse or ex-spouse of a present ACLU New York attorney, Dian Rust-Tierney ** Expected to plead guilty via a plea agreement on June 1st ...and was investigated by ICE, Homeland Security's U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, read it here, arrested and charged for possession of child pornography. Here's what the judge said about Rust-Tierney's charges and the evidence that supported the charges:

U.S. Magistrate Judge Theresa C. Buchanan was not swayed, saying the images found on Rust-Tierney's computer were "the most perverted and nauseating and sickening type of child pornography" she has seen in 10 years on the bench. Defense attorneys Peter D. Greenspun and Jonathan Shapiro appealed her detention order and will try again today to win their client's release on bond.
This from The Federal News Radio:
Among the items found on Rust-Tierney's computer was a six-minute video that prosecutors described as "a compilation of some of the worst child torture and rape scenes" that police have seen in their various investigations of child exploitation, all set to music by the rock band Nine Inch Nails.
This from ABCnews.com:
The videos described in the complaint depict graphic forcible intercourse with prepubescent females. One if the girls is described in court documents as being "seen and heard crying", another is described as being "bound by rope."
Back to irresponsible, liberally biased and arrogant: there is miniscule reporting on this. ABC.com, Fox News, The Washington Post, some AP. Everyone seems to be reporting the same few details, except O'Reilly, who went ballistic with the lack of coverage - called it A Journalistic Cover-up. If the argument for lack of press attention is that Rust-Tierney was no longer an ACLU Chapter President, (served 2002-2005), he was an ACLU board member until the day of his arrest (or some reports say he resigned the day before). He actively represented the ACLU AGAINST protections for our children as they use computers in public libraries. His wife, or ex-wife, is employed by the New York City ACLU office,...and these charges are not just ordinary pornography charges. Homeland Security busted him! If I understand correctly, this was a global effort to round-up perverts doing just what Rust-Tierney is alleged to have done. This is about children - this man worked with children! There's more. This is the true arrogance of the MSM. You may have read this at Stop the ACLU, or my reporting here and here (including O'Reilly video) or that of numerous other bloggers, but you haven't seen it in the MSM (at least that any of us can find and we've been looking), other than the NJjournal.com. Inset text - my quick summary:
The present and long-time President of the ACLU, Nadine Strossen (also a Professor at the New York Law School), employs as her Chief Aide a man convicted of Child Endangerment. Steven C. Cunningham (Steven Christie Cunningham, I believe), was permanently disbarred in the State of New Jersey for online chats with a supposed 12 year old boy. He retains his license to practice law in the State of New York. I have called Strossen's office numerous times, as well as her attorney, to confirm that Cunningham is still her Chief Aide. The answer is always a no comment, but I have reason to believe he still holds the position. Read the update and details of my last phone call here.
There's ABSOLUTELY NO PRESS ON THIS. It is a total blackout. The missing headlines...I cannot help but contrast the easy, loud and constant headlines written about Abu Ghraib - before charges were filed, when it was just a rumor. Here's just three to jog your memory, and really, I'm sorry to do so, because it has all been "so done" before. If we can have the following written about our military before a court trial, why do we not have the same beating of drums to inform the public of the despicable charges outlined above - regarding a man well-known in Washington D.C. social circles? The Washington Post.com printed Sworn statements by Abu Ghraib Detainees and warned that the "statements are by alleged victims of sexual assault." January 2004 The New Yorker: Torture at Abu Ghraib: American soldiers brutalized Iraqis. May 2004 Charges from Seymour Hersh at an ACLU EVENT, "Children Raped at Abu Ghraib July 2004. Here's just a few words from that:
Some of the worst things that happened you don't know about, okay? Videos, um, there are women there. Some of you may have read that they were passing letters out, communications out to their men. This is at Abu Ghraib ... The women were passing messages out saying 'Please come and kill me, because of what's happened'...
Perhaps there were videos, arrests made, charges filed, convictions handed-down on the rape of children. I missed them if so. Didn't miss the news on it though. July 2004 Convictions were reported in September 2005. It seems that the importance given to the ACLU, the credence afforded them by many, and the wide-reach of ACLU power, would demand at least a statement from ACLU President Nadine Strossen. La Raza La Radicals

By Jim Simpson

Outrages are coming so fast and furious these days that I am numb. It has become difficult to be outraged when practically everything politicians of both parties are doing is outrageous. But a recent proposal in Congress deserves mention. HR 1999, proposed in April by co-sponsors Ruben Hinojosa (D-TX) and Rick Renzi (R-AZ), would provide $10 million a year to a radical immigration group, the National Council of La Raza (meaning “the Race”). The bill offers funds for “community development and affordable housing projects and programs serving low-and moderate-income households,” for families of “Hispanic origin.” So giving immigrants the same free medical care, education, food, housing and income support available to all low income groups is not enough. Now we have to single them out for special treatment, empowering a radical organization in the process! And the bill does not discriminate between legal and illegal immigrants. I don’t need to tell you where most of the money will go. It is bad enough there are already programs that do this. The real dig is that NCLR gets to distribute the money, keeping them well endowed and cementing their position of influence within the immigrant community. NCLR challenges the “radical” label that Michelle Malkin, U.S. Congressmen and others have placed on them. On the NCLR website they make a forceful argument claiming they oppose illegal immigration, disavow separatist or racist Hispanic movements and only seek to bring Hispanics into the American mainstream by teaching English, respect for our laws, etc. Sounds truly inspiring. Of course the Congressman who had the guts to call them radicals has since conveniently died, and thus has no way of responding further. I like to be factual. Anyone who reads my columns knows that. So I looked into some of the organizations and causes they support. Remember proposition 187, the 1994 California ballot initiative that would have denied social services to illegal immigrants? What reasonable person would deny it’s insane to allow illegal immigrants to not only flagrantly violate our border laws, but then get all kinds of social services to award their criminality once they get here? It passed with 58% support. Any rational taxpaying citizen, Hispanic or otherwise should support it, right? Not La Rasa. They, along with other groups, successfully defeated it in court with the help of then Governor Gray Davis. Here’s their answer, as expressed in an address by former NCLR President Raul Yzaguirre at their 2003 Annual Conference:

Proposition 187 in California and similar proposals elsewhere were ugly efforts to hurt the Latino community. They were direct and blatant attacks.

But we fought back. We didn't passively sit back and accept someone else's fate for us. Maybe we surprised the bigots and the xenophobes. We got angry when they expected us to be meek.

Now the Hispanic community is being assaulted once more. This time they don't want to make you angry, so their tactics are subtle. But no matter how many nice words and glossy photos they hand us, a knife in the back is deadly even if it's delivered with a smile.

“Bigots,” “xenophobes,” that’s what we are. And “a knife in the back is deadly even if it's delivered with a smile.” That last snide remark was aimed at George W. Bush and other Republicans trying to court the Hispanic vote. Not bigoted? Not racist? Not radical? Certainly not grateful. This group has relied extensively on generous American foundation and government grants since its inception in 1968. They received $5.8 million from the Feds in 2005, according to their Annual Report, and now they may well get an additional $10 million/year for their trouble. How nice. It gets better. Have you heard of Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, better known by its acronym MEChA? If you live in California, you have. This group’s website states “We are Chicanos and Chicanas of Aztlán reclaiming the land of out birth…” which according to their revisionist history includes areas of the Southwestern US. In their answer to critics’ charges of support for this radical separatist group, NCLR explain that MEChA is really just a “student organization whose primary objectives are educational” and that their founding charter’s radical goals don’t matter. To make their pathetic case, they cite, of all things, a passage from an LA Times article by one Gustavo Arellano that “few [MEChA] members take these dated relics of the 1960s seriously, if they even bothered to read them.” So we’re supposed to take the word of a Hispanic LA Times reporter as an answer to this serious charge?!? I went to the MEChA website. The first page states in bold print “The following documents are essential to the philosophy of MEChA. Every MEChista should be familiar with them,” referring to MEChA’s “National” Constitution, El Plan de Santa Barbara, and El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán. The Constitution states in its preamble: “Chicano and Chicana students of Aztlán must take upon themselves the responsibilities to promote Chicanismo within the community, politicizing our Raza [Race] with an emphasis on indigenous consciousness to continue the struggle for the self-determination of the Chicano people for the purpose of liberating Aztlán (emphasis mine).” To get a flavor for how these “liberated” people think, go to the following Aztlán news link, where the author discusses how the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse saga is being exploited by “Jewish pornographers,” or visit their news site, for a treatise from these enlightened Mexicans on their charming views of Americans. This is the same tripe you’d find coming from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the American Socialist Party or MoveOn.org, Daily Kos, or Michael Moore come to think of it. Simply amazing how predictably similar they all are. The fact is that NCLR has teamed up with blatantly radical groups like the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) to thwart illegal immigration reform at every turn. NCLR’s website has a clean, professional look and their propaganda carries all the buzzwords designed to make them look moderate, very much like the equally-radical Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). They have similarly wrapped themselves in the mantle of moderation by cultivating friends in both parties, flattering gullible lawmakers. So are they polished? Yes. Do they fool a lot of people? Apparently. Are they really moderate? No. According to WorldNetDaily, NCLR had “virtual veto power” over the most recent Senate immigration proposal. These are the folks pushing immigration policy in the U.S. Is there anywhere left to turn?

ACLU President Retains Convicted Child Endangerment Aide?

Trackback URL for this entry:

Where is the main stream press on this issue?

The 16-year President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Nadine Strossen, appears to continue to retain convicted felon Steven C. Cunningham as her Chief Aide.

Some background: Steven C. Cunningham was convicted of the murky charge of Child Endangerment in the State of New Jersey. What is child endangerment? Did he fail to buckle a child's seatbelt? Did he leave a small child at home, unattended? Did he go shopping with a child and let the child wander away? Did he allow a child to assault another child - endangering the assaulted? Did he let a child play with a medicine bottle?

No, that's not what he did. He had three online chats with a boy that he believed was 12 years old, but was actually a police officer. According to charges filed, the phone calls were lewdly graphic and he attempted to meet "the child" somewhere. Cunningham was permanently disbarred in the State of New Jersey, but it appears that he is still licensed to practice in the State of New York and continues in the position of Chief Aide to ACLU President Nadine Strossen.

Since Strossen's office will not confirm or deny Cunningham's important position as her Chief Aide, why do I think he is still, indeed, with the ACLU? Here's why: A search of New York State Unified Court System eCourts site confirms that Steven Christie Cunningham is licensed to practice in New York. Is Steven Christie Cunningham the same convicted Steven C. Cunningham? I think so. After this morning's "no comment" from Strossen's office, I called the phone number for Steven Christie Cunningham given on eCourts website. That call was answered by the New York Law School voicemail. When I selected Cunningham's name from the list offered, the call was answered by Nadine Strossen's office - the same young man who took my first call this a.m. and refused comment.

So much for the ACLU's interest in your civil liberties or mine...our right to know if a man convicted of child endangerment is an integral part of the ACLU daily operations.

As I said in a previous post:
Now, if the Chief Aide or Executive Assistant to the CEO of Wal-Mart was convicted of Cunningham's charges, we would know about it. Suppose a high-ranking assistant on Dr. Laura Schlessinger's staff was so convicted - we'd know about it. What if a person of influence within Dr. James Dobson's organization was convicted of child endangerment - we know we would know about it - not only from the MSM but Wal-Mart, Dr. Laura and Dr. Dobson would be called upon to explain how this abomination could possibly happen right under their noses. From the ACLU we hear nothing - at least that I can find.
As I have said in previous posts, Nadine Strossen did not commit a Child Endangerment crime. Nevertheless, the ACLU is becoming infamous for their defense of the right to access child pornography. Strossen is the author of Defending Pornography. Pornography doesn't necessarily mean "child" pornography but the ACLU's defense of The North American Man-Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) clearly cannot be explained away as a civil right. How do you defend the right of men to "talk" about and "write" about sexually preying on young boys, because they are only "talking" or only "writing" about it, when you fully know, but refuse to acknowledge, that children have been damaged by NAMBLA.

Read about Virginia ACLU Chapter President Charles-Rust Tierney and his charges on child pornography here and original background on Strossen and Cunningham here and here and watch this video with Strossen debating Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia on morality.
