Times Square Car Bomb: Explosives in Smoking Times Square Car

A failed incendiary device consisting of gasoline, propane and burned wires, was found in a smoking car parked in Times Square today. Several blocks around the famous tourist spot was evacuated. I'll have updates as they are available.

 Times Square

Reuters says it was a "dark-colored sport utility vehicle, which was smoking and "emitted a small "flash." The car was reportedly parked very close to "The Lion King" on 45th Street. A firefighter said a "mini-explosion" occurred around 6:30 p.m.

From Sky News:
A dark-coloured sports car was found to contain explosives, gasoline, propane and burned wires, a New York Fire Department officer told Reuters.

The office, who did not give his names because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said a man was seen fleeing the car.

Police evacuated several blocks around the popular tourist area in the centre of Manhattan in case there were other devices.

The officer said the car was smoking and there were popping sounds.

The car was said to be a "failed device."
This report says an SUV was "smoking," and contained a package which failed to explode.

At 12:20 a.m. May 2, 2010: I'm hearing on Fox News that the license plate doesn't jive with the car registration or vin number.
