August 21 Deadline for Dropping One on Iran Without Radiation Release

Fox News' David Asman and for U.S. U.N. Ambassador John Bolton have a detailed conversation about Iran's announced launch of the first of ten nuclear reactors. The real news here is that a strike on Iran before August 21st can be done without releasing radiation into the atmosphere. According to Bolton, after August 21st radiation is an issue for the area. Bolton doesn't believe Israel or anyone will drop the big one on Iran's nuclear facilities. [Disclaimer: In my title, "Dropping One" does not refer to Dropping The One] See the video below. See an update below.

John Bolton
News that Russia will load nuclear fuel rods into an Iranian reactor has touched off a countdown to a point of no return, a deadline by which Israel would have to launch an attack on Iran's Bushehr reactor before it becomes effectively "immune" to any assault, says former Bush administration U.N. Ambassador John R. Bolton.
Once the fuel rods are loaded, Bolton told Fox News on Friday afternoon, "it makes it essentially immune from attack by Israel. Because once the rods are in the reactor an attack on the reactor risks spreading radiation in the air, and perhaps into the water of the Persian Gulf."
Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit has more information.

Update 8-17-10:
This report from The Jerusalem Post says if the Bushehr plant is hit after the fueling begins, the radiation can reach as far as the waters of the Persian Gulf.

Russian Fires Near Nuclear Base - Russian Atomic Bomb: US Sends Firefighting Equipment to Russia

Russian officials say one of 500 raging wildfires is nearing their "main nuclear centre," where a "secret town"  houses it's "most sophisticated" research labs - as well as the "Russian atomic bomb." A recording breaking summer heat and lightening striking a pine tree sparked the deadly blazes. The U.S. is sending firefighting equipment. Do you think Russia will like us now?

Other reports are saying our equipment has arrived and the nuclear site is no longer endangered.

Obama Vows to Ratchet-up Pressure on Iran: Funniest Quote of the Year

Funniest quote of the year: "The idea here is to keep on turning up the pressure" ~ Barack Obama.  The operative word is "keep." We have not been ratcheting up pressure on Iran, so we cannot "keep" ratcheting up the pressure, especially with the veto powers of Commies China and Russia sitting on the U.N. Security Council.

Barack Obama
No worries...no rush. Just let this Iranian banty rooster continue to kill our military, his own citizens and threaten people everywhere.

More:
"In our talks with China it was agreed that tools such as sanctions have lost their effectiveness," he told reporters in Beijing.
I would like to see an American leader say to the Security Council, "screw you, strong letter to follow." I will get a coalition of nations to isolate Iran, thus making my country safer , Israel safer and the surrounding Islamic countries safer. If I fail, then so be it, but it won't be because I didn't try."

Oh, but wait...US Ambassador to the U.N., Susan Rice, said Thursday that China is now ready for "serious" talks. Ridiculous. How many times has we gone through this? The answer is over and over, and year after year.

In February, Iranian president Mahmoud Achmadinejad said his country had begun the enrichment of fuel at 20%:
...experts say Iran could convert a stockpile of 20% enriched uranium to weapons grade material within six months.
Former UN Ambassador John Bolton said this week that Obama is naive in thinking sanctions can now stop the country from acquiring a nuclear arsenal:
The test is, can you pass a sanctions resolution that will stop Iran from continuing to pursue nuclear weapons, and the unambiguous answer is no. This continued talk about sanctions is counterproductive because it gives people the kind of a warm and fuzzy and comfortable feeling that we're doing something when in reality we're not."
We let the IAEA's now retired Mohamed El-Baradei, and a Nobel Peace prize awardee,  lie to the world for years about Iran's nuclear aggression, and just one month ago, just before he was set to exit the world eye, he said "Iran has not implemented any of the measures called for by the Security Council...." In May 2008, El-Baradei said Iran was not after a bomb:
"We haven't seen indications or any concrete evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon and I've been saying that consistently for the last five years," ElBaradei asserted.
The bottom line is this: we have let the U.N. Security Council be dominated by Islamic nations, and we allowed a Muslim to watch the hen house.

Obama Chides Military Might

In a speech before Moscow's New Economic School, Time.com is quoting President Obama saying countries who are militarized have no future.

President Barack Obama
The future does not belong to those who gather armies on a field of battle or bury missiles in the ground.
And one, two, three...all together now, al Qaeda and the Taliban said: "you go brother!" So what's his plan for Iran and North Korea? One day this President will learn a hard lesson: his power lies in the military might and strength of America - that means our military strength, not his military strength.

Perhaps his military strength is planned to be the United Nations. Obama's Senate Bill 2433 commits to the eradication of poverty, and the achievement of the U.N.'s Millennium Development Goal (MDG), which intends to disarm the world - because the only way to eradicate poverty is to eradicate war.

 1) The MDG says this can be done by initiating a worldwide freeze on armed forces - prohibitions of the use of force...move towards the abolition of war and...the UN Secretariat and interested Governments, or a separate group of Governments, should develop a draft proposal for global disarmament.

 2) Prohibiting advanced weapons technology...devise ways of stopping the technological development of new and more advanced weapons...

 3) Monitor small arms There's much more on immigration - calling for the "global principal of freedom of circulation for all...and controlling the world's finances (you read that right), and controlling conservation through a global tax. While Obama may not be able to pull this off...yet, the goals have been in writing for years. Obama supports it, although he seems to specifically tie his Bill to only reducing poverty.

The thing is, the U.N. MDG sees eradicating poverty tied to all the items I've listed above - war causes poverty, weapons cause poverty - and so they must also be eradicated. Obama wrote and sponsored Senate Bill 2433. The Bill has been sitting in a coma since December 2007 - waiting for the time to be right. This article has the pertinent links.

Obama Putin Comparison: Eric Cantor Bashes Auto Policies

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) compared Barack Obama to Putin, the Russian Prime Minister and he made that comparison rather well.

The White House has stripped credit holders of rights and given them to Democratic allies.
They said, Set aside the rule of law, let's strip secured creditors, bondholders, of their rights. Take them away outside of the bankruptcy process and give them to the political cronies and the auto workers unions,"
Rep. Eric Cantor
Cantor failed to make another highly publicized comparison of these two men. Both enjoy time in front of the camera shirtless: Obama here. Vladimir Putin here. For Conservatives, this is an encouraging interview. Just ignore the snark, because after all, this is the AP. Take a look at Texas Fred's comments on Eric Cantor and the "comparison."

Sakharov Widow: World Ignores Shalit Due to Anti-Semitism

By Findalis
many of the readers of this blog will recognize or remember who Andrei Sakharov was, or his widow Yelena Bonner. Or what they did for human rights and freedom in the Soviet Union. Many say that the Soviet Union would never had collapsed but for the tireless work of that remarkable couple. In the field of human rights, Yelena Bonner is not only an expert, she is one of the leading authorities. She speaks with the voice of the oppressed, having lived through the horrors of Stalinism and Soviet repression. There are very few in the world that can truly speak with such moral authority. Recently she gave a speech at the three-day Oslo Freedom Forum, a gathering in response to the Durban II conference. Here is some of that speech:

…At the age of 14, I was left without my parents. My father was executed, my mother spent 18 years in prison and exile. My grandmother raised me and my younger brother. The poet Vladimir Kornilov, who suffered the same fate, wrote: ‘And it felt that in those years we had no mothers. We had grandmothers.’ There were hundreds of thousands of such children… …Read Sakharov’s Memoirs. It’s a pity his Diaries haven’t been translated; they were published in Russia in 2006. Apparently, the West isn’t interested now in Sakharov. The West isn’t very interested in Russia either, a country that no longer has real elections, independent courts, or freedom of the press. Russia is a country where journalists, human rights activists, and migrants are killed regularly, almost daily. And extreme corruption flourishes of a kind and extent that never existed earlier in Russia or anywhere else. So what do the Western mass media discuss mainly? Gas and oil -- of which Russia has a lot. Energy is its only political trump card, and Russia uses it as an instrument of pressure and blackmail... Russia will remain the way it is now for decades, unless there is some violent upheaval. …They say people are coming together -- but in reality, they are growing apart. And that isn’t because an economic depression suddenly burst forth, and swine flu to boot. [It] began on September 11, 2001. At first, anger and horror was provoked by the terrorists who knocked down the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center and by their accomplices in London, Madrid and other cities, and by the shahids, suicide bombers who blew themselves up at public spaces like discotheques and wedding parties, whose families were rewarded $25,000 each by Saddam Hussein. Later, Bush was blamed for everything, and as always, the Jews -- that is, Israel… So it is about Israel and the Jews that I will speak... At one time, the Nobel Peace Prize was the highest moral award of our civilization. But after December 1994, when Yasser Arafat became one of the three new laureates, its ethical value was undermined. I haven’t always greeted each selection of the Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Storting with joy, but that one shocked me. And to this day, I cannot understand and accept the fact that Andrei Sakharov and Yasir Arafat, now posthumously, share membership in the club of Nobel laureates. In many of Sakharov’s publications… [he] wrote and spoke about Israel. I have a collection of citations of his writing on this topic. If it were published in Norway, then many Norwegians would be surprised at how sharply their contemporary view of Israel differs from the view of Sakharov. Here are several citations from Sakharov: … “All wars that Israel has waged have been just, forced upon it by the irresponsibility of Arab leaders.” “With all the money that has been invested in the problem of Palestinians, it would have been possible long ago to resettle them and provide them with good lives in Arab countries.” …Now, a new motif is fashionable (in fact it’s an old one): ‘Two states for two peoples.’ It sounds good. And there is no controversy in the peace-making Quartet, made up of the U.S., the UN, the EU, and Russia (some great peace-maker, with its Chechen war and its Abkhazian-Ossetian provocation). The Quartet, and the Arab countries, and the Palestinian leaders (both Hamas and Fatah) put additional demands to Israel. I will speak only of one demand: that Israel accept back the Palestinian refugees. And here a little history and demography are needed. According to the UN’s official definition, refugees are considered those who fled from violence and wars, but not their descendants who are born in another land. At one time the Palestinian refugees and the Jewish refugees from Arab countries were about equal in number -- about 700-800,000. The newly-created state Israel took in Jews (about 600,000). They were officially recognized as refugees by the UN Resolution 242, but not provided with any UN assistance. Palestinians, however, are considered refugees not only in the first generation, but in the second, third, and now even in the fourth generation. According to the UN Works and Relief Agency’s report, , the number of registered Palestinian refugees has grown from 914,000 in 1950 to more than 4.6 million in 2008, and continues to rise due to natural population growth. All these people have the rights of Palestinian refugees and are eligible to receive humanitarian aid. The entire population of Israel is about 7.5 million, of which there are about 2.5 million ethnic Arabs who call themselves Palestinians. Imagine Israel then, if another five million Arabs flood into it; Arabs would substantially outnumber the Jewish population. Thus, created next to Israel will be a Palestinian state cleansed of Jews, because in addition to the demand that Palestinian refugees return to Israel, there is also the demand that Judea and Samaria are cleansed of Jews and turned over to Palestinians – while in Gaza today there is not a single Jew already. The result is both strange and terrifying, not only because Israel will essentially be destroyed... Because the plan “two states for two peoples” is the creation of one state, ethnically cleansed of Jews, and a second one with the potential to do the same thing. A Judenrein Holy Land - the dream of Adolph Hitler come true at last. So think again, those who are still able, who has a fascist inside him today? And another question that has been a thorn for me for a long time. It’s a question for my human rights colleagues. Why doesn’t the fate of the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit trouble you in the same way as the fate of the Guantanamo prisoners? You fought for and won the opportunity for the International Committee of the Red Cross, journalists, and lawyers to visit Guantanamo. You know prison conditions, the prisoners’ everyday routine, their food. You have met with prisoners subjected to torture. The result of your efforts has been a ban on torture and a law to close this prison. President Obama signed it in the first days of his coming to the White House… But during the two years Shalit has been held by terrorists, the world human rights community has done nothing for his release. Why? He is a wounded soldier, and fully falls under the protection of the Geneva Conventions. The Conventions say clearly that hostage-taking is prohibited, that representatives of the Red Cross must be allowed to see prisoners of war, especially wounded prisoners, and there is much else written in the Geneva Conventions about Shalit’s rights. The fact that representatives of the Quartet conduct negotiations with the people who are holding Shalit in an unknown location, in unknown conditions, vividly demonstrates their scorn of international rights documents and their total legal nihilism. Do human rights activists also fail to recall the fundamental international rights documents? And yet I still think (and some will find this naïve) that the first tiny, but real step toward peace must become the release of Shalit. Release - and not his exchange for 1,000 or 1,500 prisoners who are in Israeli prisons serving court sentences for real crimes. Returning to my question of why human rights activists are silent, I can find no answer except that Shalit is an Israeli soldier, Shalit is a Jew. So again, it is conscious or unconscious anti-Semitism. Again, it is fascism. Thirty-four years have passed since the day when I came to this city to represent my husband, Andrei Sakharov, at the 1975 Nobel Prize ceremony. I was in love with Norway then. The reception I received filled me with joy. Today, I feel Alarm and Hope (the title Sakharov used for his 1977 essay written at the request of the Nobel Committee). Alarm because of the anti-Semitism and anti-Israeli sentiment growing throughout Europe and even further afield. And yet, I hope that countries, their leaders, and people everywhere will recall and adopt Sakharov’s ethical credo: “In the end, the moral choice turns out to be also the most pragmatic choice."
It is time for the world to stop trying to appease the Arabs and listen to the truth. The true obstacle to peace in the region is not caused by Israel, but by the Arabs, who couldn't destroy Israel in battle and will attempt to destroy Israel through diplomatic means. And the world will let them. For it is acceptable to hate and despise the Jews. It is time for the world to listen to the voice of a woman who lived under some of the worst repression that humanity has imposed upon others. It is time to bring Gilad Shalit home.

The Triangle: Israel-Georgia-Russia

The Republican National Convention (RNC) brought us more than the excitement of McCain's choice of VP, Sarah Palin. From the podium we heard terrorism named for what it is: Islamic terrorism." It's been a long time coming, and wasn't it fine to hear it? Now we move beyond the long-awaited reveal of the Conservative "team," McCain -Palin and stir our terrorism vigilance again...shedding light, not only on Barack Obama but on Islamic jihad, which is encouraged today by what it sees from Russia. Russia is Iran's surrogate protector. Russian is still a possible source for removing WMD from Iraq to...somewhere. Russia has a veto on the U.N.'s Security Council...a Council which offers no "security" to Democracies. Russia has refused to allow the U.N. sanctions needed to knock Iran off her nuclear high-horse, and Russia does billions of dollars of business with Iran. Russia is not invested in removing the greatest threat to Israel, a nuclear Iran. We have a McCain-Palin team now. We know the direction for the Republican party is one of Conservatism. Now let us think about the consequences of the current Georgian/Russia war, and how that war is a helpmate to Iran.

Guest Author: Holger Dansk at Holger Awakens Russians Raided Georgian Airfields to be Used by Israelis for Iran Bombing

A fascinating piece here from DEBKA points to reports that after the Russian invasion of Georgia, the Russians sent in commandos to raid some Georgian airfields that the Georgians had agreed to let Israeli use as a fueling and launch site for air strikes agains Iran's nuclear weapons sites. Look at some of the details:
The Russian raids of two Georgian airfields, which Tbilisi had allowed Israel to use for a potential strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities, followed the Georgian offensive against South Ossetia on Aug. 7. Under the secret agreement with Georgia, the airfields had been earmarked for use by Israeli fighter-bombers taking off to strike Iran in return for training and arms supplies. DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources report that flying from S. Georgia over the Caspian Sea to Iran would sharply trim the distance to be spanned by Israeli fighter-bombers, reducing flying time to 3.5 hours.
And now, the worst possible piece of news about this raid by the Russians:
Russian Special Forces also raided other Israeli facilities in southern Georgia and captured Israeli spy drones, says the report. Israel was said to have used the two airfields to “conduct recon flights over southern Russia as well as into nearby Iran.” The US intelligence sources quoted by UPI reported that the Russian force also carried home other Israeli military equipment captured at the air bases. When this happened before, Russian military engineers quickly dismantled the equipment, studied it and passed the technology on to Tehran and Damascus.
So, in essence, the Russians are more in cahoots with the Iranians than probably first thought. And if one was very inclined to conspiracy theories, you might just say that the invasion of Georgia and the whole South Ossetia violence was cover for just this raid on both the airfields and the Israeli equipment. Either way, it paints an omnious picture of what perhaps the Russians just might do in the event of an actual Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities. Has anyone actually considered the possibility that the Iranians would call on the Russians for help in that crisis? Would Russian fighter jets be mobilized at first word of the attack and be used to engage returning Israeli fighter/bombers? And what in the sam hell would the U.S. do at that point? At one point in time, the Russians selling technologies to Iran and Syria was slightly ignored by the West because it was felt that Russia was in need of some cash...but now, with Russia raking in the monies from oil and natural gas, this espionage and selling of technology and secrets can only be seen as aiding an abetting an enemy of the World. I have not been one to back any kind of military actions against Russia at this time but if this all pans out that the Russians are interfering with Israeli plans to rid the world of Iranian nukes, then all bets are off and the West has no choice but to put the same military bullseye on Moscow as it has on Tehran.
Russian units raid Georgian airfields for use in Israeli strike against Iran – report The raids were disclosed by UPI chief editor Arnaud de Borchgrave, who is also on the Washington Times staff, and picked up by the Iranian Fars news agency. Northern Iran and the Tehran region, where most of the nuclear facilities are concentrated, would be within range, with no need to request US permission to pass through Iraq air space. Our sources say that if the Russians got hold of an Israeli unmanned aerial vehicle complete with sophisticated electronic reconnaissance equipment, they will have secured some of the IDF’s most secret devices for spying on Iran and Syria. When this happened before, Russian military engineers quickly dismantled the equipment, studied it and passed the technology on to Tehran and Damascus.

Pravada Op-Ed: Rice is a "man hating apology for a man" and a bullsh**t mongerer

Timothy Bancroft-Hinchey, at first glance, has authored what appears to be the ugliest attack on an individual public figure ever seen in print. Writing for Russia's Pravada, Bancroft-Hinchey gets his rant off.

At the end of this article you'll find some information about Bancroft-Hinchey.

Condoleezza Rice and the insult to international diplomacy

Pravada July August 19, 2008

In the equation which makes up the odious, criminal and murderous Bush regime and its murderous, criminal and odious foreign policy, the constant factor is constituted by a teacher, promoted to positions way above her personal and intellectual station by a gullible fool of a President.
This teacher, whose sheer incompetence as National Security Advisor and as Secretary of State is today so blatantly apparent, goes by the name of Condoleezza Rice. The fact that Rice was National Security Advisor at the time of 9/11 speaks for itself, period.
As Secretary of State, she is supposed to be responsible for her country’s diplomacy, she is supposed to be Washington’s leading diplomat. But can anyone think of a figure less qualified for the post? Starting with the face (set in a constant snarl, with a scar for a mouth, lips pursed back in a sneer, piggy eyes looking as though something evil is lunging behind them), continuing with the body language (aggressive stance, butch, defensive posture as though she is hiding something or afraid) and ending with the discourse (about as diplomatic as a raspberry and a fit of giggling at a funeral ceremony), she cuts a sorry figure.
The constant arrogance and hypocrisy of this failed female makes it that much more apparent that here is a person way out of her depth. Instead of regarding sensitive issues from a balanced viewpoint as she is supposed to do, this incompetent loud-mouthed, bad-mannered, bullshit-mongering bimbo takes one side, ignores the other and then speaks down from a holier-than-thou platform as if she were on a lecture dias.
This is not a classroom, Condoleezza Rice, and you are not a diplomat. You are a liar, a cheap, shallow, failed, wannabe actress on the diplomatic stage. This is the real world and out here, you have to be prepared to face up to your responsibilities.
For a start, you have failed to mention one single time the Georgian war crimes against 2.000 Russian civilians on the night of 7/8 August. Why have you systematically refused to admit they happened?
Why have you not mentioned the devastation of Tskhinvali by your allies’ forces? Why do you continue to support the Saakashvili regime? You therefore support war crimes? You therefore support the Georgian devastation of civilian structures? You side with Saakashvili against the 2.000 civilians murdered? Do you wish they had killed more Ossetians that night? Do you think it is right to target civilian structures with military hardware?
Why have you failed to refer to a single item of these odious crimes?
Is it because you are a balanced diplomat ready to look at both sides and find a solution? Or is it because you are an incompetent frumpish hysterical female, wholly out of her depth, who instead of acting in a civilised manner as one would expect from someone in your position, instead gives lectures which are downright rude, pig-headedly arrogant and most unladylike?
So instead of mouthing off about NATO and Russia, how about you shut the hell up, put a sock in it and go back to inflict yourself on your students? Rumour has it you were pretty much hated in academic circles as well, perhaps not as much as in the area of diplomacy, which your very presence insults. You, personally, are the reason why Washington has been divorced from the international community; you, personally are the reason why so many millions of people hate the idea of the United States and all it stands for; you, personally, are responsible for driving a wedge of sullen hatred into the hearts and mind of the international community.
You have done more damage to your country, to its international standing, to the history and the noble precepts of your founding fathers than any other American in history. And now you say you are not going to let Russia “win” in Georgia? Russia already has won!
Nobody believes the lies you have spun in the western press circles. The readership of PRAVDA.Ru has never been higher, in all its language versions, since we have hundreds of thousands of readers flocking to us daily, with comments against the nonsense and lies paraded as “news” by the likes of yourself.
In a nutshell, Georgia invaded South Ossetia and slaughtered 2.000 civilians in one night. You cannot admit that because it would be admitting that Georgia’s President Saakashvili is incompetent. So the two of you stick together, hoping it will blow over if you keep repeating the same thing.
You have lost, Condoleezza Rice. Your ally Saakashvili is responsible for thousands of murders and war crimes, your military advisors, training and equipment have been proven to be wholly inferior to the Russian Armed Forces and this, the nearest we ever got to direct conflict, has proven that your forces were utterly thrashed.
So if you want to bring it on, you will find Russia saddened but by no means afraid and perfectly ready. As an alternative, get back behind a desk where you belong, you rude, insolent, bad-mannered, man-hating apology for a lady before you get your allies into trouble.
End article by Timothy BANCROFT-HINCHEY A thank you to Michael Squires BookWormRoom, back in 2006, says this about Bancroft-Hinchey:
He’s a permanent member of Pravda’s editorial staff although, as his name demonstrates, he’s not Russian. In fact, he’s a British songwriter with a degree from Leeds (which clearly makes him qualified to write on all matters political). Although the link for his bio is dead, nothing really dies in cyberpsace, and I was able to find that “USS Clueless” provides extensive quotations from Bancroft-Hinchey’s defunct biographical site:

Virginia Governor Credits Obama with a Ceasefire in Georgia

Video courtesy YouTube.com Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, a Vice Presidential-hopeful, says that Russia's President Medvedev "complied" with Senator Obama's request for a cease fire. Fox and Friends' Gretchen Carlson interviewed Virginia Governor Tim Kaine by telephone on August 12, 2008. Kaine is widely believed to be high on the short list of Democrat Vice Presidential candidates. Conservatives are decrying Kaine's inference that the cease fire was due solely to Senator Obama's tough talk and some in the MSM are joining in: Chicago Sun Times reporter Steve Huntley:

It took first-term Sen. Barack Obama three tries to get it right. Headed for a vacation in Hawaii, the presumed Democratic candidate for commander in chief issued an even-handed statement, urging restraint by both sides. Later Friday, he again called for mutual restraint but blamed Russia for the fighting. The next day his language finally caught up with toughness of McCain's.
CBS News' Mark Ames took issue with McCain's August 8th call to review the measures NATO can take to aid stabilization in the area:
Calling on NATO to "stabilize this dangerous situation" is not going down well with Russia.
Ames adds a bit more color to his comments:
McCain issued a stark-raving statement from Des Moines that is disturbingly reminiscent of the language used in the lead-up to NATO's war against Yugoslavia in 1999, a war McCain zealously pushed for...
On August 8th, both Senators Obama and McCain released initial statements on the invasion, each have issued subsequent statements, and the heat is on the campaigns to prove their candidate the wisest and toughest. Video text:
It was a bad crisis for the world. It required tough words but also a smart approach to call on the international community to step in. And I’m very, very happy that the Senator's request for a ceasefire has been complied with by President Medvedev.

The US, UN, Iran and 2008

By Stanford Matthews Blog @ MoreWhat.com

The following is certainly an oversimplified appraisal. But the order of the news reports lent itself to an almost automatic response. The events themselves may have played out somewhat differently. At least as far as timing is concerned. But nevertheless there chronological publishing times may be in proper order. The point is this.

We all know that Iran was on President Bush's 'D' list. They were not likely to get invited to any parties. And if you are old enough to remember the dagger in the heart of Jimmy Carter's Administration or had some history classes in school, you are familiar with 444 days worth of agony suffered by Americans at the hands of Iranian hospitality.

Then there was the Reagan Administration basking in the glory of the return of the American hostages and later the Iran-Contra scandal and I'm getting crazy just thinking about it. That is over twenty-five years ago and the process has not improved. It appears more complicated than the simple explanation that every country is looking out for their own agenda and benefit.

With the Memorial Day concluding earlier this week, thoughts of WWII and the greatest generation did not escape most Americans. Citizens of many other countries are sure to have been reminded also. When I think of our country's contribution to winning that war alongside so many other allied nations, another striking reminder enters my thoughts.

At the end of WWII the League of Nations was replaced by the United Nations whose stated mission was to intervene in conflicts between nations and avoid future wars. It almost seems as though human beings were finally getting it right. Instead of a period of time of peaceful activity followed by the totally impractical practice of armed conflict, we would solve our differences in an organized group to eliminate the need for death and destruction in enormous quantities.

Let's review the latest success of this noble endeavor. As stated earlier, the sequence of the following reports is assumed to be relatively chronological.

Iraq's Sadr blasts US-Iranian meeting

BAGHDAD, May 30 (UPI) -- Among those who blasted the meeting is Iranian-backed Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, who said in a statement Wednesday that the U.S.-Iranian talks in Baghdad Monday constituted "interference in Iraqi affairs."

So the first thing that happens is the cleric known as Sadr throws his two cents worth in 'dissin' the meeting. One man who has done everything he can to cause more bloodshed in Iraq is complaining about a meeting between the US and Iran. Could be so simple as he doesn't want anything solved for it ups his value as a 'somebody' in Iraq.

Talking With Our Enemies Is Smart Policy

The Moderate Voice - By Jeb Koogler. The recent meeting between American and Iranian officials in Baghdad effectively brings to an end the Bush administration’s use of ‘enforced ...

Then we have another opinion apparently applauding an approach that differs from the typical 'cowboy George' routine that one could characterize as shoot now, ask questions later or the old Teddy Roosevelt adage of walk softly and carry a big stick. This second philosophy has a tendency of provoking more attitude from hostile foes and delay the desired victory outcome.

Iran official rules out halting enrichment ahead of nuclear talks ...

International Herald Tribune, France - In another sign of defiance, hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad boasted that Iran has become so strong that no adversary can defeat it. ...

Which of course prompted the response above from the Iranians as well as another one bragging about no one would be crazy enough to challenge the great and powerful Iranian military. Ok, where did we here that Mother of all wars speech before. Yo, yo, Prez AJ, over powering the Iraqi forces was not a problem. Keeping the nutcases contained has presented a problem, but foreign armies, not a big deal. Does he have that little man syndrome?

Russians Mourn the Loss of Free Press

Putin enjoys a "cuppa," while this flattering photo of him is taken by the free press privileges of the BBC. Photo courtesy of the BBC.

In Russia, the people silently mourn the murder of their democracy at the hands of President Vladimir Putin. After the killing of beloved Russian journalist, Anna Politkovskaya in 2006, the International Herald Tribune put it this way:

I am convinced that her killer was, first and foremost, the paucity of freedoms in Russia. The lack of freedom killed freedom - this is where the sad logic of her killing comes from, no matter who is behind it.

Lack of freedom spawns lawlessness: Russia has fostered numerous vindictive, unpunished people indignant that someone dares to point a finger at them and to say that their actions are criminal. At the same time, authoritarian power always fragments into clans, and the accusations of an independent journalist can be a priceless weapon in the battle of clans or for the liquidation of political rivals.
And then this:
Hundreds of people who came to say farewell to Anna looked not only crushed, but also helpless. The mourners were shown their real place, as people without rights, who will be told only what the authorities want them to know.
And this::
...at least twelve journalists have been killed in contract-style slayings. No one has been brought to justice in eleven of the twelve cases.
And another important piece on how unattended freedom is killing freedom in Russia.

For thoughts on Venezuelans fighting in their streets for free press, read: how Danny Glover and Hugo Chavez give a "nose-thumb" to freedom.

This a day to remember just how precious are our freedoms and to fiercely battle back against those who would hastily feed the gators, hoping they will eat him last.

Venezuelans Fight the Loss of Free Press

Freedom across the globe dwindles as Danny Glover steps-in and cozies-up with Chavez, snatching the Bolivars right out of the hands of the people.

Venezuelans are in the streets fighting for free press. Their dictator, Hugo Chavez, has taken-down the most popular television station there, and replaced it with a state-sponsored station.

Glover thumbed his nose at Venezuelan liberties (he need not worry, American troops are protecting his) and aligned himself with deep pockets and dictators, revealing his true lack of concern for freedom, for the poor and the down-trodden.

Glover snagged his $20-$30 Million (depending on whose reporting you believe) before Venezuelan actors, anchors, agents, writers, camera crews, and grips lost their jobs. Three thousand people out of work and a station operating for 53 years is gone. Glover will make two movies in Venezuela, but no, the jobs for those in television will not be replaced by Glover's ventures. On Glover's love of America:

Glover was a signatory to "The Conscience of the World," a public letter signed by 160 artists which condemned the War in Iraq, and pledged support for the Communist dictatorship of Cuba. He also supports the Maoist group Not In Our Name (NION), which "pledges resistance to endless war, detentions and roundups, [and] attacks on civil liberties," and is directed by members of the Revolutionary Communist Party.
As Glover attempts to add legitimacy to dictatorships, Chavez controls the military, the legislature, the courts, most private industry, including our American oil companies - he also controls former U.S. President Jimmy Carter.

This a day to remember just how precious are our freedoms and to fiercely battle back against those who would hastily feed the gators, hoping they will eat him last.

Someone you need to become acquainted with

I have been aware of the writer below for a while. He says, probably with more authority, what I have been saying since 1989. This article should be read by any American interested in our nation's survival. Hint: that excludes most Democrat politicians. Following are a few paragraphs and a link to the rest of the article: ONE CLENCHED FIST by J. R. Nyquist Two recent items reveal Moscow’s intentions. First, President Vladimir Putin has announced that he is suspending Russia’s commitment to follow the Conventional Forces in Europe treaty (CFE). This means that Russia can move tank and motorized infantry divisions to NATO’s doorstep. Second, Russian radio news broadcasters have been ordered to make 50 percent of their reporting on Russia “positive,” and that the United States is – from now on – to be described as Russia’s enemy. President Putin’s intentions are clear. The Cold War is to be renewed. America is the “main enemy” once again. It has been my contention, for many years, that this was the KGB’s intention from the outset. The collapse of Communism was a staged event. It was a repeat of Lenin’s New Economic Policy of the 1920s, in which Russia pretended to liberalize and move toward capitalism, drawing investment and technology from the West. I believe that the political process in Russia, from 1989 to the present, was guided to this end. In 1989 America’s leaders could not see the Kremlin’s intentions because intentions are invisible to the naked eye. And so America’s leaders were fooled. Now Russia and China will emerge together as “one clenched fist,” and their intention is to smash America. Read the rest here.

Who Are We Really Fighting

By Jim Simpson Every day we hear more reports about the rising Islamist threat. Stephen Emerson reports alarmingly about the Islamists hidden among us. Al Qaeda is reportedly alive and spreading all over the world – morphing into a many headed snake. Meanwhile, Iran has moved from bluster to bully as it seizes British sailors on the open sea and blatantly ignores worldwide demands to cease its nuclear program, while continuing to arm Iraqi terrorists in direct defiance of the United States. Islamist militants in Palestinian-controlled areas and Lebanon visibly flex their muscles both militarily and diplomatically, while Muslims worldwide stridently demand absurdly special treatment in the non-Muslim societies where they have settled. As a friend once said, paraphrasing Trotsky: “You may not be interested in Islam, but Islam is interested in you.” Without diminishing the threat these worldwide activities pose, it is important nonetheless to recognize that they are a distraction, a deliberate provocation designed to keep our eyes focused on the wrong enemy. The true threat is and always has been the worldwide communist movement, spearheaded by the Soviet Union (oh sorry, I keep forgetting, “Russia,”) and Communist China. And given the cacophony currently being raised by their Islamist provocateurs, I fear the sucker punch is not long in coming. We are obsessed with routing out “al Qaeda” in Iraq but almost willfully ignore that the insurgency remains largely driven by the Iraqi Ba’athist party’s highly organized network, with assistance from their Ba’athist cousins in Syria. I fear that if we merely defeat al Qaeda, our misidentification of the enemy will lead us to give up the fight early, leaving the much more dangerous Ba’athist infrastructure in place. In such circumstances, we will soon be facing another Saddam. Similarly, it is easy to see a Shia-led Iraq fall into the Iranian camp if we leave. (I described this potential problem in great detail before the war started. See: Regime Change Means Eradicating the Ba’ath Party.) The Russians initially trained, funded and equipped the Ba'athists in both Syria and Iraq. They taught them the tactics being used now in Iraq against us. They continued to provide Saddam with military advice during the first Gulf war and at least the beginning of the current one, and I remain confident that they provide the Ba'athist insurgents with some manner of support to this day. They assisted in the removal of Saddam's WMD to Syria. According to defector Ion Pacepa, the former Romanian Intelligence chief, Russia long ago developed a contingency plan for all puppet states to hide WMD should Western powers appear close to exposing them. (Read all about that here.) Russia is helping Iran develop nuclear weapons. Russia’s Ba’athist puppets in Syria train and arm Iran’s Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine, as well as practically every other terrorist group operating around the globe. As for Iraq, Russia is indifferent as to whether it falls under the Iranian sphere, or returns to Ba’athist rule. In either case, it’ll be just another puppet. Russia only cares that we lose. Russia's strategy has always been to use others to do their fighting for them. It is also to make surrogate powers a threat to the US in and of themselves, both as a tactic to distract us from the true threat and to help insure that we fire first at the wrong enemy if it ever comes to that. And just as the notion of "Stateless" terrorist groups is a red herring, so is that of "rogue states." (Note: to understand why the whole idea of “Stateless” terrorists is absurd, you need only examine the funding requirements for such activities and realize that their prospects for defeating a large nation unassisted are virtually zero. You have to believe that these groups have unlimited resources and will squander them on activities that can get them killed for no ultimate purpose. And if your answer is “Bin Laden” read here to understand why this is false too.) North Korea remains attached to Russia and China at the hip and does not operate independently on the world stage. It is just one front on the offensive line, as is Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria and so, so many others. I foresee for example, a possible scenario where a so-called “rogue state” like Iran or North Korea, fires a nuclear weapon at us. We respond in kind, and the Russians, feigning fear that they are the target, launch a massive retaliatory strike against us. Whoops, sorry comrade, our mistake! The US needs to get clearer on who and what we are fighting. For starters, we need to eliminate the Ba'athist power base and obliterate Iran’s covert networks to win a decisive victory in Iraq. This will demonstrate both to ourselves and our enemies that we can win this kind of war and serve as an object lesson to the enemy that we are capable of making their chosen tactics very expensive. By this measure we are currently losing. However, I fear that if we give up, it will be the last time any politician musters the political courage necessary to confront this kind of warfare, and we will continue to face more and more of it until we are an island alone in the world against a sea of enemies. At that point it will start here at home, or we will merely be given an ultimatum with nuclear blackmail, and our feckless political class will fold like a reed in the wind. For the longer term, we need to significantly increase both our military size and effectiveness – more troops, effective anti-missile defenses, as well as conventional weapons, where we may not have as much of an advantage as we think – and dramatically improve intelligence gathering. I am not optimistic that any of this will get done. But if Hillary Clinton or some other Democrat is elected in 2008, we will assuredly go in the polar opposite direction. Hard times ahead. Update: Arabs Inside Israel Seek Peace

Israel’s worldview is even more daunting these days. Syria is bolstering its borders and the obvious conclusion is that Syria may have plans for attacking Israel. Israel is attempting to calm its Nation, but cannot afford to view Syria’s action in any light other than “threatening”. Here’s some of the dialog going around: The Syrian armed forces are being strengthened in an unprecedented way in recent memory with the help of generous funding from Iran and its troops appear to be moving closer to the border with Israel. Israeli military officials dismissed a report of a build-up of Syrian forces on the border. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, spoke to ease Israeli tensions Sunday after the French press agency reported that Syria had positioned hundreds of medium-range rockets on its side of the Golan Heights. Syria is also close to concluding a deal with Russia to procure thousands of advanced anti-tank missiles, of the sort Hezbollah used to such lethal effect against Israeli armour last year, Haaretz reported. The recent Fatah-Hamas Mecca Accord, designed to achieve a Palestinian unity government, is just as puzzling as all past attempts to gain statehood for Palestine. The Accord allows all threats Chartered and Constitutional to Israel to stand. Where does Israel’s optimistic public persona come from? Israel Official Expects Peace To Prevail

Hamas has not accepted the international community's three conditions for doing business with it _ recognizing Israel, renouncing violence and accepting past peace deals. As a result, a painful aid boycott remains in place, and a final peace deal seems a long way off, despite renewed Israeli-Palestinian contact, including a summit on Sunday between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
As Arabs inside Israel seek a better way of life, this report: Children of the Palestinian Intifada: The Lost Generation is the reality in Palestine. Palestinian leaders are responsible for the plight of their children. The hopelessness and raw despair profiled in this article is painful to anyone with an ounce of compassion. Palestine cannot blame this on Israel or any other country. Abbas, Haniya – give your children peace and hope. Change your Charters. Help the free world help you.
Arabs Inside Israel Seek Peace
Arabs living inside Israel are seeking change. According to a new report commissioned by the Committee of Arab Mayors in Israel, Arabs are “moving towards a new era of self-recognition…”. The report, known as The Future Vision of the Palestinian Arabs in Israel states its purpose as “…answering the question, "who are we and what do we want for our society?" This is a question all Palestinians must ask. Everyday life for the average Palestinian will remain desperate until they deal with their leadership. For some background on this very question, I recently posted Who and What are Palestinians? It is a bulleted, easy-read on the early history of Palestine, Arabs and Israel. “The Future Vision” report can be seen as a fairly naked appeal from the Arabs residing inside Israel, to the people of Israel, to “treat us as equals.” Compared to the Jew-related “Arab-speak” we have become all too familiar with, this document seems restrained even as it accuses Israel of “exploiting democracy in the service of its Jewishness…”. The “Vision” asserts a firm foundation for the indigenous rights of Arabs to Israel and calls for “…an independent Palestinian State, based on UN resolutions. Have you read those Resolutions lately? Resolution 242 is dated November 22, 1967 and there's an undated follow-up, Resolution 338. I think it's fair to say these Resolutions are not resolving anything. Reports from the Nazareth bureau of the Los Angeles Times latimes.com shows conflicting reactions from Israelis; some see a growing militant minority, some fear a state within a state, most see a threat to Jewish identity, and those who have advocated for better conditions for Arab residents “feel disheartened.” More from latimes.com:
"Shawki Khatib, head of the 64-member Arab mayors group, said the manifesto was not an ultimatum but an effort to catalog Jewish discrimination against Arabs and provoke debate over how Israel's two largest communities should live together."
And more:
“The Future Vision” document (also referred to as a "manifesto" by latimes.com), seeks conditions of peace and prosperity with Israelis. Palestinian leaders will never allow it".
I see other conflicts: Hamas, Fatah, the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and then there’s the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. An independent Palestinian State just isn’t on the agenda for any of these factions, unless it includes every square inch of an Israel without Jews. The Zionist Organization of America (ZOA) points to the absurdities surrounding any Palestinian leadership’s acceptance of Israel as a neighbor. In the following excerpts from ZOA, referring to the Baker Hamilton Report (also known as Iraq Study Group) regarding Israel and Palestine, I have eliminated referenced page numbers for easier reading. The text of the cited PLO, Fatah and Hamas "Articles" are included after the ZOA material. Here’s the quotes as well as the ZOA’s response:
Baker Report: Arab-Israeli peace efforts should include "Support for a Palestinian national unity government" of Fatah and Hamas Fact: The Baker Report calls for negotiations with "Palestinians (those who accept Israel's right to exist)" yet both Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah and Hamas, in their respective Charters, call for Israel's destruction ( see Fatah: Article 12; Hamas, Article 15) and the use of terrorism (Fatah: Article 19; Hamas: Article 7). Hamas also calls for the murder of Jews (Article 7). In October 2006, Mahmoud Abbas admitted that in his view neither Fatah nor Hamas need recognize Israel.”
And the second point from ZOA:
“Baker Report: Seeks "A Syrian commitment to help obtain from Hamas an acknowledgment of Israel's right to exist". Fact: This recommendation exemplifies the absurdity and lack of rationality that permeates the Report. Hamas is dedicated in its Charter to the destruction of Israel (Article 15) and the murder of Jews (Article 7). Why would Hamas heed the Syrian regime to change its raison d'etre when Syria itself not does recognize Israel's existence, hosts several Palestinian terrorist groups and rejected Israel's offer of all of the Golan Heights in negotiations in 2000? The Report is characterized by an unwillingness to acknowledge the actual nature and goals of the Syrian regime.
Follows the text of the specific Articles referred to above: (“Hamas” Articles are taken from “The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas):
Fatah Constitution Article 12: "Complete liberation of Palestine and eradication of Zionist economic, political, military and cultural existence." Fatah Constitution Article 19: Armed struggle is a strategy and not a tactic, and the Palestinian Arab People's armed revolution is a decisive factor in the liberation fight and in uprooting the Zionist existence, and this struggle will not cease unless the Zionist state is demolished and Palestine is completely liberated.
Hamas Charter Article 7: Follows just a portion of Article 7, which according to the Hamas Charter, quotes The Prophet Allah:
"The Day of Judgement will not come about until Moslems fight the Jews (killing the Jews), when the Jew will hide behind stones and trees. The stones and trees will say O Moslems, O Abdulla, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him. Only the Gharkad tree, (evidently a certain kind of tree) would not do that because it is one of the trees of the Jews." (related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).
Hamas Charter Article 15: Follows just a portion of Article 15:
The day that enemies usurp part of Moslem land, Jihad becomes the individual duty of every Moslem. In face of the Jews' usurpation of Palestine, it is compulsory that the banner of Jihad be raised. To do this requires the diffusion of Islamic consciousness among the masses, both on the regional, Arab and Islamic levels. It is necessary to instill the spirit of Jihad in the heart of the nation so that they would confront the enemies and join the ranks of the fighters.
(Two paragraphs deleted here)
"The bond of one day for the sake of Allah is better than the world and whatever there is on it. The place of one's whip in Paradise is far better than the world and whatever there is on it. A worshipper's going and coming in the service of Allah is better than the world and whatever there is on it." (As related by al-Bukhari, Moslem, al-Tarmdhi and Ibn Maja). "I swear by the holder of Mohammed's soul that I would like to invade and be killed for the sake of Allah, then invade and be killed, and then invade again and be killed." (As related by al-Bukhari and Moslem).
Then just to back-up the fervor of the Palestinians for their mission, there’s this from The Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) Charter:
Iris.org - The PLO Charter Article 15: The liberation of Palestine, from an Arab viewpoint, is a national (qawmi) duty and it attempts to repel the Zionist and imperialist aggression against the Arab homeland, and aims at the elimination of Zionism in Palestine. Absolute responsibility for this falls upon the Arab nation - peoples and governments - with the Arab people of Palestine in the vanguard. Accordingly, the Arab nation must mobilize all its military, human, moral, and spiritual capabilities to participate actively with the Palestinian people in the liberation of Palestine. It must, particularly in the phase of the armed Palestinian revolution, offer and furnish the Palestinian people with all possible help, and material and human support, and make available to them the means and opportunities that will enable them to continue to carry out their leading role in the armed revolution, until they liberate their homeland.
Regarding the above PLO Charter Article 15, iris.org says this:
“The text is the English version published officially by the PLO, unabridged and unedited. Note, however, that the PLO's translation sometimes deviates from the original Arabic so as to be more palatable to Western readers. For example, in Article 15, the Arabic is translated as "the elimination of Zionism," whereas the correct translation is "the liquidation of the Zionist presence." "The Zionist presence" is a common Arabic euphemism for the State of Israel, so this clause in fact calls for the destruction of Israel, not just the end of Zionism.”
A portion of Article 9 of the Charter states that:
“Armed struggle is the only way to liberate Palestine. Thus it is the overall strategy, not merely a tactical phase. The Palestinian Arab people assert their absolute determination and firm resolution to continue their armed struggle and to work for an armed popular revolution for the liberation of their country and their return to it….”
So, while quoting the Zionist Organization of America may appear a biased source, the text of Palestinian Charters, Covenants and Constitutions puts it all into perspective.
"The main message is that we do not accept our situation as second-class citizens," Khatib said. "We want to change that situation, and we prefer to change it through dialogue."
The same article points out how the Arabs residing inside Israel feel “…alienated by the Star of David on Israel’s flag…”. Have we ever heard of the offense Israel must feel at the hostile flags surrounding their tiny nation? Has dialogue with Palestine ever been other than deception? As Arabs in Israel seek “self-recognition," are Israelis expected to ignore the Hamas support from the very Arabs sharing their land? Is Israel to believe that these same Arab residents would not take the land and expel them, or worse, if given any opportunity? Latimes.com reports that nearly half of the Arabs living inside Israel live below the poverty line. Is Israel expected to provide better homes, lands, services and education than Palestine provides to Palestinians? Are Arabs in Israel poorer than the Arabs in Palestine? I don’t know the answer, but I’m doubting they could be poorer – perhaps “as” poor, but probably not “poorer”. Whatever the intentions of the Arabs led by Mr. Khatib, the PLO, Hamas and Fatah will never allow conciliatory measures on behalf of Israel, unless it leads to the complete surrender of Israel to Palestine. Also talking about Islam and Terrorism: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confesses, and confesses from Right Truth Excerpt: In a new Pentagon report released today, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed confesses to his involvement in the September 11, 2001 attacks on America. Yasser Arafat: The Ugly Legacy Continues

I recently posted two entries on Palestine-Israel: one a bulleted list of Who and What are Palestinians - Post 1, and then Arabs Inside Israel Seek Change. Jim Simpson (bio below) offered his related article to Maggie's Notebook: "Who Was Yasser Arafat". Arafat's influence on Palestinians stills weighs heavily on the free world. The lack of support for Israel in the U.S. is baffling and I can only assume that many do not know the background of Israel, the holy lands and Palestine; what other excuse can there be to ignore the call for the destruction of a people? Here's the updated, and footnoted, article from Jim exposing background on Islam's never-ending quest to eliminate Israel: BIO: Freelance writer Jim Simpson is a former White House staff economist and budget analyst (1987-1993). Who Was Yasser Arafat By Jim Simpson
Update February 26, 2007 The article below remains as relevant today as it was when written. This is because it correctly analyzes the true nature of the “Palestinian Problem.” The character of which has been utterly ignored if not deliberately suppressed by our friends in the mass media. This has been borne out by actions, as well as statements, of both Hamas and Hezbollah over the past year. In short, nothing has changed. The Palestinians, no matter who is in charge, no matter the concessions in land and dollars, will continue to work toward the destruction of Israel until they succeed or are destroyed in the process. This is inevitable due to the true nature of the Palestinian movement. Read and learn. March 2, 2005 The January elections in Iraq seem to have awoken dormant aspirations for freedom all over the Middle East. From protests in Lebanon and the fall of Lebanon’s Syrian backed government, to promised elections in Egypt, a bright flame of hope has been kindled. Adding to the optimism, the recent death of Yasser Arafat paved the way for election of a new Palestinian leader, Mahmoud Abbas, upon whom the world has pinned high hopes for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. Since this conflict is said to be the epicenter of Middle Eastern turmoil, how realistic are hopes for its resolution? How much faith can we put in Mahmoud Abbas? To even begin to honestly evaluate these questions, we must first dispense with the myths and legends surrounding Yasser Arafat and make a full and honest disclosure of his record and the nature of the organization through whose ranks he rose. Such honesty has unfortunately been sorely lacking in public discourse over the past thirty years, but is essential if we are to accurately gauge Abbas’ prospects for success. There was an outpouring of sympathy from leaders around the globe following Arafat’s death on November 11, 2004. Typical was the remark by French President Jacques Chirac, who called him “a man of courage and conviction who for 40 years incarnated the Palestinians' fight for recognition of their national rights.”(1) Without doubt Arafat is the person most often identified with the cause of Palestinian statehood. But this characterization, made popular by mainstream Western media, and reflected in remarks by leaders such as Chirac, is so far off the mark one wonders how they could have remained so uniformly deluded for so long. So who and what was Yasser Arafat really? What Yasser Arafat was not Yasser Arafat was not a Palestinian. He was an Egyptian. He was born in Cairo Egypt, as Mohammed Abdel-Raouf Arafat As Qudwa al-Hussaeini, of a merchant father from Gaza who shuttled back and forth between the two cities. His mother was from Jerusalem. Now you might conclude from his parentage that this would still make him a Palestinian by heritage if not birth. But in fact—and this may shock you—there is no cultural, racial, or national “Palestinian” identity except that invented by the PLO. Palestinians are Arabs who have lived for a time in the area generally regarded as “Palestine”. The area has never in history been under autonomous “Palestinian” rule. Who could make such an audacious claim? Former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir did, for one (2). Perhaps however, it would be more credible coming from the PLO itself. Every now and then, such groups dispense with the propaganda and reveal what they are really up to. PLO executive committee member Zahir Muhsein made one such statement to a Dutch newspaper in 1977. He said: The Palestinian people does not [sic.] exist. The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct "Palestinian people" to oppose Zionism.(3) Going even further back, the PLO’s first leader, another Egyptian named Ahmed Shukairy, said: “It is common knowledge that Palestine is nothing but Southern Syria.”(4) The following historical summary puts it in perspective(5): The Romans first used the name Palestine in 70 A.D. as part of their effort to suppress the Jews. It was intended as an insult, being derived from “Philistines”, a people conquered by the Jews centuries before. It was ruled alternately by Rome, by Islamic and Christian crusaders, by the Ottoman Empire and by the British after World War I, but there has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians. There is no language known as Palestinian. There is no distinct Palestinian culture. Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians (another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc. Yasser Arafat was not a champion of Palestinian statehood. His purpose was the elimination of Israel as part of the larger goal of eliminating western influence in the region and creating one unified Arab nation. In Article 15, The PLO charter clearly states: The liberation of Palestine, from an Arab viewpoint, is a national (qawmi) duty and it attempts to repel the Zionist and imperialist aggression against the Arab homeland, and aims at the elimination of Zionism in Palestine. It has been asserted that the correct translation for “elimination of Zionism” is “elimination of Israel.”(6) “Imperialist aggression” as usual, refers to the Western powers, the U.S. in particular. Nothing in the PLO charter has changed, despite the many contradictory statements from Arafat and other PLO leaders suggesting they would settle for a “Palestinian State” coexisting side-by-side with Israel. A Palestinian state is not their goal, never has been. The PLO sees Palestine and Palestinians as “an integral part of the Arab nation”, and that Palestinian “liberation” and “Arab unity” are complementary goals. In Articles 13 and 14, the charter states: 13. Arab unity and the liberation of Palestine are two complementary objectives, the attainment of either of which facilitates the attainment of the other. Thus, Arab unity leads to the liberation of Palestine, the liberation of Palestine leads to Arab unity; and work toward the realization of one objective proceeds side by side with work toward the realization of the other. 14. The destiny of the Arab nation, and indeed Arab existence itself, depend upon the destiny of the Palestine cause. From this interdependence springs the Arab nation's pursuit of, and striving for, the liberation of Palestine. The people of Palestine play the role of the vanguard in the realization of this sacred (qawmi) goal. To see this clearly one must understand what they mean by “Arab unity”. As I have asserted in earlier essays, it is another phrase for the “single Arab nation” idea pursued by the Ba’athists of Iraq and Syria(7), which in turn is a twist on the familiar “unification” demands of communist movements all over the world as justification for aggression, including but not limited to Vietnam (“One Vietnam”), Korea (Unification), and Red China (Taiwan is a “breakaway” province which needs to be reunified with the mainland). It is not surprising therefore that Yasser Arafat’s Fatah organization, and all the other Palestinian revolutionary movements for that matter, have received much of their support from Syria and (until Operation Iraqi Freedom), Iraq. For unlike the other nations of the Middle East, who would rather maintain national autonomy thank you very much, the Ba’athists support the idea of a “Common Arab Homeland” (unified under the Ba’athist banner, of course). This is not surprising either, given the fact that both the PLO and the Ba’athist movement were originally creations of the Soviet Union–the PLO is a Soviet inspired Communist movement. This is evidenced in the Charter’s frequent use of familiar terms like “Imperialist and Imperialism” which are KGB coined invectives for the United States, and others like “Vanguard, and Progressive” which are familiar Soviet terms applied to communists and communist movements. But you need not decipher words in the charter to reach that conclusion. Former CIA Deputy Director Ray Cline provided ample proof in his book Terrorism, The Soviet Connection.(8) Ion Pacepa, acting chief of Romanian foreign intelligence, was the highest-ranking intelligence officer to ever defect from the Soviet Bloc. His group was tasked with training PLO leaders. In a recent interview with FrontPageMagazine.com, he stated: The PLO was dreamt up by the KGB, which had a penchant for ‘liberation’ organizations. In 1964 the first PLO council, consisting of 422 Palestinian representatives handpicked by the KGB, approved the Palestinian National Charter-–a document that had been drafted in Moscow.(9) Yasser Arafat was not a Moslem. He was fully indoctrinated in the culture and ideology of radical communist revolutionaries and enjoyed the support and full backing of the Soviet Bloc. He was a Communist. Pacepa flatly stated Arafat was a “devoted Marxist-Leninist.”(10) This is not really news, any movement dreamt up by the KGB would, by definition, have to be communist at its core. Arafat’s professed belief in Islam, right down to TV shots of him bowing on a prayer mat in traditional Moslem fashion, is pure political theater, nothing more. So Arafat’s al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, while professing allegiance to Allah, are simply stooges carrying out the terrorist policies of the PLO. Arafat’s goal and that of the PLO has never changed. In his FrontPage interview Pacepa describes an exchange Arafat had with late Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in 1978. Ceausescu had just informed him that Moscow wanted him to pretend that the PLO was willing to renounce terrorism to in hopes of becoming a Palestinian state. Breznev thought that then President Carter would buy it: “But we are a revolution,” Arafat exploded...”We were born as a revolution and we should remain an unfettered revolution.” Arafat expostulated that the Palestinians lacked the tradition, unity and discipline to become a formal state [emph. mine]...and he was not willing to put any laws or other obstacles in the way of the Palestinian struggle to eradicate the state of Israel.(11) But Ceausescu prevailed on Arafat: Ceausescu...told [Arafat] that, if he would transform the PLO into a government-in-exile and would pretend to break with terrorism, the West would shower him with money and glory. ‘But you have to keep on pretending, over and over’...in the shadow of your government-in-exile you can keep as many terrorist groups as you want, as long as they are not publicly connected with your name.(12) Arafat was granted the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for renouncing terrorism and promising to change the PLO charter’s goal of eliminating Israel. None of these promises have been kept, despite Arafat’s solemn oaths, made “over and over” as Ceausescu suggested. On September 13, 1993, the same day Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin signed the “Declaration of Principles” embodying those ideals for which he would later get the Nobel Prize, he explained his motives on Lebanese TV: Since we cannot defeat Israel in war, we do this in stages. We take any and every territory that we can of Palestine, and establish sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more. When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel.(13) As I mentioned earlier, a Palestinian state is not the PLO’s goal, never has been. Once you accept this, it is easy to understand why he rebuffed former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak’s extremely generous offer of statehood for Palestine. What Yasser Arafat Was Yasser Arafat was the father of modern terrorism. Arafat’s PLO pioneered in the use of terror tactics and has been both an inspiration and source of support for many of the terrorist groups that came afterward. He is responsible for countless acts of terrorism not only against Israel but also the United States, including: • The murder of 11 Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. This watershed event ushered in the age of modern terrorism. • The murder in May 1973 of American Ambassador to Sudan, Cleo A. Noel, Jr., his deputy, George Curtis, and Belgian charge d’affaires Guy Eid. The State Department by the way, has apparently tried to cover this up.(14) • The 1974 killing of 26 mostly 15 year-old girls taken hostage at school in Ma’alot, Israel. • The 1985 hijacking of Italian cruise liner Achille Lauro and murder of U.S. citizen Leon Klinghofer, a wheelchair-bound tourist who was shot then pushed overboard in front of his wife. • Popularizing the hijacking of airliners.(15) • Initial recruiter of Imad Mughniyah, today one of the most notorious international terrorists. Through his membership in Hezbollah, Mughniyah helped bring Iran into the terrorism business and is believed to be responsible for the 1982-83 Beirut Embassy and Marine barracks bombings. His meeting with Osama Bin Laden in the mid 1990s paved the way for a working • relationship between Hezbollah and al Qaeda and assisted al Qaeda in improving their bomb-making capability(16). • Over 300 attacks against the Israeli population in which civilians were killed, including deliberate targeting of children. • Over 1,300 Israelis killed in attacks since the signing of the Declaration of Principles (Oslo accords) in 1993.(17) Yasser Arafat was a thief. By all accounts Arafat has stolen billions of dollars in aid money meant for the Palestinian people. While the areas under PLO control have deteriorated precipitously, Arafat stashed away most, if not all, of the monetary aid intended for them.(18) • Almost one billion dollars collected in taxes from the Palestinian people was retained in investment accounts under Arafat’s name. • Astonishingly, in the Oslo accords, Israel agreed to pay Arafat the sales taxes collected from Palestinians in Israel, about $1 billion to date. This too went into Arafat’s personal accounts.(19) • According to the PLO’s own finance minister, Salam Fayyad, Arafat gave commodity monopolies to his friends, who in turn diluted their products and jacked up prices on the Palestinians. For example, the General Petroleum Corporation took fuel purchased from Israel and watered it down with kerosene. In addition to ripping off Palestinian drivers, the poor quality fuel ruined their cars’ engines. Arafat got kickbacks.(20) • Arafat received many gifts from the KGB, Saudi Arabia and others. Saddam allegedly gave him $50 million for his support in Gulf War I.(21) Yasser Arafat was a ruthless oppressor of the Palestinian people. Arafat established a Stalinist enclave among the Palestinians, a police state with the highest number of security forces per capita of any country in the world. Per Capita income has been cut approximately in half since the Palestinian Authority took power following the Oslo accords(22). The authority rules with an iron hand. Death sentences have been issued, for example, to Palestinians who willingly sell their own land to Israelis(23). Yasser Arafat was an alleged pederast. It is widely believed that he was homosexual. Among other evidence, the Romanians claim they took surveillance videos of Arafat engaged in orgies with his male bodyguards(24). However, internationally famous Italian journalist Oriana Fallaci, who has interviewed many foreign leaders including Arafat, revealed with evident disgust in a 1981 Playboy interview(25), that Arafat had a marked preference for young boys. Perhaps this is the blackmail Arafat’s horrid wife, Sufa, with whom he hadn’t lived for years, has used to garner herself a multi-million dollar annual “death benefit.” The proceeds of course, flow from his billions in ill-gotten gains. Many speculate that the cause of his death was AIDS. Arafat’s symptoms included blotchy skin, dementia, a depressed immune system and massive weight loss. The only other disease indicated by these symptoms, Leukemia, was ruled out. The only ones who can release Arafat’s medical records are his family, and they aren’t talking. The official line went from the ludicrous “he was poisoned by the Israelis” to the absurd: “A poor diet and gastrointestinal complications due to his long confinement in PLO headquarters imposed by the Israelis caused his health to deteriorate.” Of course, it was the Israelis fault, one way or the other. I vote AIDS. Terrorists from Syria to Iran to the wilds of Afghanistan widely championed Arafat and his cause as another front on the fight against the decadent and immoral “Great Satan.” It is indeed ironic that one of their most celebrated champions should succumb to a disease caused by activities they claim are symbolic of the decadent West: homosexuality. Yasser Arafat was despised by Middle Eastern leaders. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak referred to him once as “a son of a dog.” A Syrian defense minister called him the “son of 60,000 whores.”(26) Even his Soviet Bloc handlers found him repulsive: “I’ve never before seen so much cleverness, blood and filth all together in one man” Romanian General Constantin Munteaunu was reputed to have said. Ion Pacepa added: “I felt a compulsion to take a shower whenever I had been kissed by Arafat or even just shaken his hand.”(27) Yasser Arafat was leader of a murderous terrorist organization whose goals have not changed. As should be obvious from this analysis, the PLO leadership has long been committed to one goal: the obliteration of Israel. The poor Palestinians have been and remain nothing more than useful dupes for this grand scheme. I don’t understand why Western leaders even talk about Palestinian statehood. It would be nice to hope that Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat’s successor, may make a genuine attempt to secure a lasting peace. I doubt it. Abbas is a smooth talker and has the appearance of a kindly grandfather. In this regard he is indeed different from Arafat. But the ideological swamp from which both he and Arafat came is a toxic environment incapable of supporting sound mental health. As an early member of the PLO, Abbas has survived in this sewer a long time. You do not rise to the top by secretly harboring ambitions to betray such an organization’s goals. You get there by being the cleverest among many vile brutes. Furthermore, it’s hard to penetrate the logic of his hopeful supporters. Other terrorist organizations in PLO areas, like Hamas, Islamic Jihad, or Hezbollah for example, which was implicated in the February 25 nightclub bombing(28), are characterized as being outside the PLO’s sphere of influence. If this is the case, how can any agreement with the PLO guarantee peace? If it is not the case, then why do the attacks continue despite Abbas’ repeated promises? Expect more of the same, except with polished excuses and apologies no doubt. The PLO was originally created as one front on a multi-front war to wrest the Middle East from Western control and turn it into a Soviet-inspired socialist paradise. This idea has been temporarily shelved due to rejection of Ba’athist/communist ideology throughout much of the Middle East and now the U.S. led war in Iraq. Whether the rise of radical Islam is yet another proxy in this war remains to be seen. There are some indications that may be the case, but it is beyond the breadth of this article to analyze such a question. In any event, dictatorial regimes have long planning horizons. As Yasser Arafat said in his interview with Oriana Fallaci: We don't want peace! We want war, victory. Peace for us means the destruction of Israel and nothing else. That which you call peace, is peace for Israel and the imperialists. For us it is injustice and shame. We will fight until we achieve victory. Decades if necessary, generations.(29) For now they are biding their time. For the long term, rest assured the PLO is every bit as determined to wipe Israel off the face of the map as they were the day eleven Israeli athletes were murdered in Munich. They don’t care about much else—never did. Footnotes: (1) BBC News, UK Edition, November 11, 2004. (2) "There is no such thing as a Palestinian people...
