Mt. Sinai Hospital Organ Trafficking? Albert Einstein Medical College Organ Trafficking?

According to Nancy Scheper-Hughes a willing participant in an illegal operation to sell his own kidney documented his story on video as it happened at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City. The kidney seller says "I met a broker in Brooklyn and I sold my kidney." Speculations are that Rabbi Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum, arrested in a human organ trafficking FBI sting this week, may be involved. Albert Einstein Medical College in New York City is also implicated.

Mt. Sinai Hospital
Scheper-Hughes says she has a copy of that video. She tried to interest 60 Minutes in it, but the video quality is poor. Scheper-Hughes says she took the video to the New York Academy of Sciences in September 2008. She showed a portion of it, and said the viewers could not believe it, but they recognized the doctors and the hospital. Professor Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum of Brooklyn is believed to be associated with some of these claims from Scheper-Hughes. Read more about Rosenbaum's arrest for human organ trafficking and Scheper-Hughes charges against him. Another hospital mentioned in the audio below is Albert Einstein Medical College. Scheper-Hughes says she met with an agent in Philadelphia who was also a Rabbi. He didn't seem to think Rabbi Isaac Rosenbaum's actions were illegal - "Isaac is a good man," and is probably making some money on the side.
Albert Einstein Medical College
Scheper-Hughes confronted Albert Einstein management. In a meeting, she said:
I have the charts of a dozen Israelis who were illegally operated on in this wonderful academic hospital, in your unit, using a broker in New York City and using donors they had never met, and they lied and said they were relatives, sometimes they didn't speak the same language. What were you doing there?
She says she was escorted out of the meeting, she had the name of the doctors and one of them was sitting at the table. Professor Scheper-Hughes says the broker paid more for the kidney of a healthy college student than for that of a not-so healthy person. More to come on Mt. Sinai and Albert Einstein hospitals. Nancy Scheper-Hughes is Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum Accuser

Professor Nancy Scheper-Hughes is a professor of Anthropology at UC Berkely and the founder and director of Organs Watch. Professor Scheper-Hughes notified the FBI seven years ago that Rabbi Levy-Izhak (Issac) Rosenbaum was trafficking organs. Listen below to the audio of Scheper-Hughes talking this morning about Rosenbaum and organ smuggling. She begins the audio at about 2.40 minutes in.

UPDATE: See below for Scheper-Hughes' implication of Mt. Sinai Hospital and Albert Einstein Medical College in Organ Trafficking. Professor Scheper-Hughes recounts stories of Rosenbaum using a gun to keep an unknowing donor from a fast retreat. She says the Rabbi is "the main U.S. broker for global human organ sales.

Levy-Izhak Rosenbaum’s name, address and even phone number were passed to an FBI agent in a meeting at the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan by a prominent anthropologist who has been studying and documenting organ trafficking for more than a decade.

Nancy Scheper-Hughes of the University of California, Berkeley, was and is very clear as to Rosenbaum’s role in the ring.

“He is the main U.S. broker for an international trafficking network,” she said.

Her sources include a man who started working with Rosenbaum imagining he was helping people in desperate need. The man then began to see the donors, or to be more accurate, sellers, who were flown in from impoverished countries such as Moldova.

“He said it was awful. These people would be brought in and they didn’t even know what they were supposed to be doing and they would want to go home and they would cry,” Scheper-Hughes said.

The man called Rosenbaum “a thug” who would pull out a pistol he was apparently licensed to carry and tell the sellers, “You’re here. A deal is a deal. Now, you’ll give us a kidney or you’ll never go home.’ ”

Scheper-Hughes felt she had to stop Rosenbaum. She met with the FBI.

“I always thought of it as my Dick Tracy moment,” she said Thursday.

She waited and waited for something to be done. The FBI may have been following the lead of the State Department, which dismissed organ trafficking as “urban legend.”

“It would be impossible to conceal a clandestine organ trafficking ring,” a 2004 State Department report stated.

Scheper-Hughes also went to Brazil and South Africa with her information, where it was taken seriously and acted upon.
But the ring kept operating elsewhere. Scheper-Hughes visited villages in Moldova where, “20% of the men were siphoned off to be kidney sellers in this same scheme.”
Mid-2008, some 80,000 patients were waiting for a kidnye transplant. It is estimated that 3,000 to 4,000 names are added to the waiting list each year. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has the following children's transplant policy:
If there is no living donor available, then a deceased donor is used. Once your child has completed the evaluation process, and we've determined a transplant is the best option, he will be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) waiting list to receive a kidney transplant from a suitable donor.
With lives saved and lengthened by organ donors, and the need for organs substantially increasing annually, competition is quiet and under-the-radar but, nevertheless, it is the life saving issue that many around world awake to each morning and go to bed with each night. Scheper-Hughes' story is chilling and that story, according to her, involves some of America's finest hospitals. She has the names of hospitals and doctors. Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum is Rabbi Trafficking Organs

Rabbi Levy-Izhak (Isaac Rosenbaum) is by far the most interesting and most egregious of all the public officials and religious leaders busted in this week's FBI sting. Who would think a Rabbi would traffic organs? Not many, but Professor Nancy Scheper-Hughes is one who did. See updates below.

Rabbi Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum
Rabbi Rosenbaum is 58 years old. His neighbors in the Borough Park section of Brooklyn thought he was in the construction and real estate businesses. It is believed that Rosenbaum's "business" for a decade has been illegal transplant organ trafficking. Seven years ago, the FBI was tipped off about Rosenbaum's human organ participation. Evidentally, they didn't believe the information provided by Professor Nancy Scheper-Hughes.

Scheper-Hughes, a professor of Anthropology at UC Berkeley, is producing a documentary "A World Cut in Two, The Global Traffic in Humans for Organs."
Kidneys are the new blood diamonds,” said Nancy Scheper-Hughes, founder and director of Organs Watch, which documents and studies the trend at the University of California, Berkeley. “It’s big, big money.”
About kidney transplanting:
Kidneys can be transplanted from both living and recently-deceased donors, but those from living donors last longer, surgeons have found. Because people have two kidneys, they are usually able to donate one without suffering ill effects. But studies have shown that impoverished live donors, who usually lack follow-up health care, don’t do as well after the operation.
Update 7-25-09: Levy-Izhak (Isaac) Rosenbaum is out of jail on bail of $3 million secured by his own real estate holding. He was ordered not to have any contact with prior kidney donors or recipients. Related and Background: Isaac Rosenbaum is Rabbi Arrested for Organ Trafficking Mt. Sinai Hospital Organ Trafficking? Mordchai Fish is Brooklyn Rabbi Arrested for Money Laundering

Mordchai Fish is a Brooklyn Rabbi arrested in an FBI sting operation. Mordchai Fish, 56, a Rabbi at Brooklyn's Congregation Sheves Achim synagogue, was arrested and charged with money laundering, along with his brother, Rabbi Albert (Lavel) Schwartz 57, and Rabbi Saul Kassin 87, both also of Brooklyn. According to NBCMiami, the two brothers were caught on tape having this conversation (taken from court transcripts):

I had 25 million from [the bank] – 20 million – that schnookie deal. I gave 20 million to [another bank]. I, I took five million. I sent it offshore..” said the witness, who was reputedly also involved in a counterfeit handbag racket, according to the court papers.
Others from Brooklyn charged and arrested with money laundering are Levi Deutsch 37, Yolie Gertner 30, David S. Goldhirsh 30, Binyomin Spira, 28, Abe Pollack 40, From Brooklyn charged and arrested with money laundering and illegal money transmitting are Schmulik Cohen, 35, Yeshayahu Ehrental, 65, and Arye Weiss, 34. A New Jersey Rabbi, Levy-Izhak (Issac) Rosenbaum, was arrested and charged with Human Organ Trafficking in the same FBI operation, according to the report linked above:

Defendant Issac Rosenbaum, meanwhile, was caught up in a shady organ procurement program, where an undercover FBI agent and the cooperating witness pretended to need a human liver for the undercover’s sick uncle, the feds charge.

“Let me explain this to you,” said Rosenbaum on February 26, 2008 according to the court documents. “It’s illegal to buy [ a liver]. It’s illegal to sell. They are going to investigate him [the donor] not you, not your uncle. He’s going to speak to a social worker and a psychologist to find out why he is doing it… and it is our job to prepare him.”

The cost would be $160,000 for the liver donation – 50 percent up front – but Rosenbaum repeatedly made it clear, according to court papers, “It's illegal to buy or sell organs. .. . So you cannot buy it. What you do is, you're giving a compensation for the time . . . whatever–-he's not working. You can't even mention.”
Documents show the following penalties may apply (detail of charges (view as .pdf) :
For the charge of conspiring to commit money laundering, the maximum statutory penalties are 20 years in Federal prison and a maximum statutory fine of $250,000. For the charge of conspiring to conduct an illegal money transmitting business, the maximum statutory penalties are 5 years in Federal prison and a maximum statutory fine of $250,000.
