Lemuel Bahe Yazzie Navajo Code Talker Dies: Lemuel Bahe Yazzie Code Talker Dies at 91

Lemuel Bahe Yazzie, a member of the famed Navajo Code Talkers has died at the age of 91. Mr. Yazzie joined the military in September 1944, and served with the 4th and 6th Marine Divisions during WWII. He was a radio telephone operator until March 1946. See a video below.

Code Talker Lemuel Bahe Yazzie

After the war, Yazzie returned to Arizona. He was an ordained minister, a rancher and a machinist. He is survived by five siblings, six children, 26 grandchildren and 52 grandchildren.

Code Talkers created an unbreakable code from the languages of their people.

From the website of the Navajo Code Talkers:
KNOWN AS NAVAJO CODE TALKERS, they were young Navajo men who transmitted secret communications on the battlefields of WWII. At a time when America's best cryptographers were falling short, these modest sheepherders and farmers were able to fashion the most ingenious and successful code in military history. They drew upon their proud warrior tradition to brave the dense jungles of Guadalcanal and the exposed beachheads of Iwo Jima. Serving with distinction in every major engagement of the Pacific theater from 1942-1945, their unbreakable code played a pivotal role in saving countless lives and hastening the war's end...
Along with other Navajo Code Talkers, Yazzie received the Congressional Silver Medal for his Marine service, and he was also an active member of the Navajo Code Talkers Association. In fact, he participated in our group trip to New York City last fall for Veteran’s Day, and those memories and many others will keep us smiling with warmth in our hearts.
 From The Kayenta Today:
The Rev. Yazzie endured the horrors of combat during the occupation of China and was in a radio platoon in a forward echelon against hostile forces. The Navajo Nation unites and offers prayers and deepest condolences to his family during this time of grief.”
In 2002, he received the Congressional Silver Medal for his Marine service.
Code Talkers used the languages of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche, Meskwaki, and Navajo. Navajo Code Talkers took part in every assault the U.S. Marines conducted in the Pacific, and in all six marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, from 1942 to 1945. Glenn Beck on Tom Hanks' Military Annihilation Accusations

First, a word from Tom Hanks:

Pacific, now, is coming out where it represents a war of racism and terror. It seemed as though the only way to complete one of these battles on a small speck of rock, in the middle of nowhere, is to, I'm sorry, Kill them all. Does that sound familiar with what we are going through today.
Is this what schools teach today? Is this what young adults believe the War in the Pacific was all about?

Japan was set to expand into Asia to countries that did not welcome her. She needed oil. No one  assumed she would not find the oil and take it. There were many complexities in Japan's relations with Britain and France, which complicated matters in the U.S.  Once Japan replaced the Peace Party with their War Party, the stage was set. The plan was to seize the oil fields in the Indies, and they saw the U.S. as an enemy in that endeavor. So they attacked Pearl Harbor.  How is this argued any other way?

America had two choices to end the war. Invade Japan or drop the bombs. An invasion was estimated to leave 35% of our landing forces dead - at least, depending on the size of the Japanese forces greeting us. Civilians were in training to join the fighting forces. Estimates of the dead including both Japanese and American forces were estimated at 250,000 to five million. Some 105,000 people perished in the explosions in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The original purpose of the atomic bomb was to clear the beaches for a land invasion, so had the war not ended with the bombings of two cities, the bombs would likely have been used on the beaches. And Americans would have died.

Is Hanks' case that after the Japanese attacked us at Pearl Harbor, American soldiers should have, in the end, laid down their lives for the Japanese, rather than ending the war. Apparently, that is what he thinks.

Had we wanted to "kill them all," we could have killed them all. Instead we killed fewer, while they were killing us. If we wanted to "kill them all" today, we could do so. Obviously, that is not our goal. We are building schools, hospitals, electrical grids and water plants. None of which worked for the people under Saddam Hussein.

It deeply offends me that Tom Hanks says the war with Japan was about racism and terror, and that today, we want to "kill them all," as our own soldiers have been blown apart trying to make Iraqi towns safe for the people.

These days, Sean Penn is more palatable than Tom Hanks.

More from Hanks:
Back in World War II, we viewed the Japanese as 'yellow, slant-eyed dogs' that believed in different gods. They were out to kiss us because our way of living was different. We, in turn, wanted to annihilate them because they were different. Does that sound familiar, by any chance, to what's going on today?"
I read a comment saying that Tom Hanks' had more in common with Forrest Gump than we could imagine, but Forrest was a patriot. He didn't make stuff up. It was what it was, and it wasn't what Tom Hanks says it was.

The video below is Glenn Beck with radio sidekicks Pat and Stu. This is a longer discussion but one worth having and listening to. Beck makes the point that America must begin looking out for herself. The way we do that is strike a lethal blow when we are struck, get back to our lives as quickly as possible - and in the main, quit protecting those able to protect themselves.

Watch the video here or go over to RightScoop and read the commentary there before watching the video.

Tom Hanks Rewrites History: Tom Hanks Calls the US Annihilators

Last night, O'Reilly talked about Tom Hanks latest absurd remarks, which were essentially that America wanted to 'annihilate' Japanese during WWII because they were different, and believed in different gods, and we are doing the same today in the Middle East. The attack on Pearl Harbor and the World Trade Towers couldn't penetrate Hanks' liberal thought processes. While we love much of his work, especially Band of Brothers and John Adams, and await this Sunday's premier of The Pacific, his efforts to rewrite history are more than a little aggravating, and deeply disrespectful to this country.

Tom Hanks

John Nolte at Big Hollywood has some powerful commentary on Hanks:
...when it comes to leftist Hollywood, whenever Tinseltown and America meet, you have to brace yourself for it — and by “it” I mean the leftist sucker punch. Throughout, Hanks sounds perfectly reasonable, intelligent and even patriotic for a couple of thousand words. But of course that’s just the lure to get us on his side before we’re walloped with this left cross<
And to answer Hanks’s question: No — annihilating people who are different sounds NOTHING like what’s going on today.
This country spends billions and billions of dollars on weapons designed to target the enemy and save the lives of  people who are “different” — those who are not our enemy but still manage to look different, speak languages we don’t and worship in ways unfamiliar to us. The irony is that as Hanks spoke those slanderous words, the American Military remains in the middle of two conflicts that have cost us thousands of precious lives and hundreds of billions of dollars all towards the noble goal of liberating 50 million “different” people in Iraq and Afghanistan. And we all know that had we practiced a more selfish and barbaric form of war the enemy would’ve been destroyed faster, American lives would’ve been saved, and the financial cost would not have been nearly as high.
But there’s no reason to speculate about America’s motivations during WWII because history has proven Hanks wrong. We had every opportunity to annihilate these “different” people. Instead we chose, at great expense, to rebuild Japan and return the sovereignty of that nation over to the “yellow, slant-eyed dogs who believed in different gods.” Or, as most people prefer to call them: our newly liberated allies.
But that’s not who we are.
Whether they’re “yellow, slanty-eyed dogs that worship different gods” or the people of the Middle East who share the same language and religion as those pledged to murder us, America selflessly protects the innocent who are “different” and as humanely as possible seeks to “annihilate” only those — even if they’re not “different” (like, say, Germans and Italians)– who practice an ideology that actually does believe annihilating those who are different.
You almost get the sense that Hanks suddenly felt uncomfortable talking about America so extensively without throwing a bone to his MSNBC fanbase.

Veterans Day Tulsa Oklahoma: Tulsa - Fifth Largest Veterans Day Parade

My hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma boasts the 5th largest Veterans Day parade in the U.S. Isn't that something for a city ranking 46th in the U.S. by population? Please scroll down for current posts through the remainder of Veterans Day.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

Three veterans will lead today's parade in downtown Tulsa:

Parade Grand Marshall Paul Andert

Parade Chief of Staff Sam Childers

Parade Commander William Beal

On this day in 1918, World War I ended on the 11th day of the 11th month at the 11 hour. Veterans Day honors all U.S. Military veterans who have served, and are serving, our country.

On this day in 1921, The Tomb of the Unknowns was dedicated at Arlington Cemetary.

USS Oklahoma

The USS Oklahoma was the 37th battleship commissioned by the U.S. Navy. She moved to Pearl Harbor in October 1936. On December 5, 1941 she moored there with six other war ships at "Battleship Row."  At 7:56 a.m. on December 7th, 1941 she was torpedoed and sunk within 12 minutes.

Okies on the USS Oklahoma

To the crew, she was affectionately know as "The Okie." A battleship was a small town gone to sea, her inhabitants mostly young and far from home.
One crewmember, USS Oklahoma survivor and author, Stephen Bower Young, wrote: "Despite the passage of time, it seems like yesterday. My mind sees clearly the shipmates I knew so well as they emerged, laughing and talking from a hatch, portside, main deck, aft, of the Oklahoma.
It is a time for morning quarters for muster, and at the urging of their petty officers, the white-uniformed sailors good-naturedly form into double ranks. They stand at ease...squaring round hats over suntanned faces...their talk is animated and they turn in my direction. Then a cloud grows darker and I see those certain few less clearly."

The Korean War, which continues today, is sometimes known as the "forgotten war."

On this day in 1620, the Mayflower Compact was signed. The first colonists leading the way to America, as we know it today, signed a governing document for Plymouth Colony. The colonists crossed the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower. At least half of those were Christians, seeking the freedom to practice Christianity, without the tyrannical direction of the the King James. The Compact clearly established that the Colony would be free of English law. "It was devised to set up a government from within themselves and was written by those to be governed." The compact began "In the name of God, Amen."
When creating the Mayflower Compact, the signers believed that covenants were not only to be honored between God and man, but also between each other. They had always honored covenants as part of their righteous integrity and agreed to be bound by this same principle with the Compact. John Adams and many historians have referred to the Mayflower Compact as the foundation of the U.S. Constitution written more than 150 later.

America was indeed begun by men who honored God and set their founding principles by the words of the Bible. They lived their lives with honesty, reliability, and fairness toward establishing this country “for the sake of its survival.” A great many of America’s Founding Fathers have been quoted in regard to living by Biblical values.
On this day of honoring, remembering, and memorializing our veterans, it is good to remember that our military consists of many religious and non-religious beliefs - but always, our wars have been about liberation, never about occupation, never about confiscation. On this day, I remember my father, who served in WWII and two brothers who served in the U.S. Air Force and I am praying God's blessing on all who have served and are serving. The Veterans Day parade in Tulsa, Oklahoma has just begun.

Prejudice and Patriotism

Cross posted by Findalis from Monkey in the Middle

Sixty-seven years ago today elements of the Japanese military attacked US forces at Pearl Harbor. While Americans should never forget that day of infamy, we should also be ashamed of what followed after.

When the US entered World War 2 there were about 112,000 people of Japanese decent living in Hawaii and the West Coast. Many of them entered the United States before the Immigration Act of 1924 which limited the number of immigrants from various nations with a quota system and excluded many immigrants from Asian and African nations. Yet the Japanese community flourished even with the discrimination and prejudice that was prevalent in the nation at the time.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor the US had a problem. Although we are a free nation, we felt that each member of this community was a Japanese spy. That the loyalty of the whole community was in question.

Since Dec. 7th, gangs of thugs were roaming through the Japanese communities looting, raping, and killing those they saw as an enemy. And we had a solution for this problem. We would place the whole Japanese-American community into interment camps for their own protection. While the Supreme Court in Hirabayashi v. U.S. YASUI U.S. wrote:

“...because persons of Japanese ancestry have been faced with many restrictions while residing in the United States, they may have become more isolated from the rest of the population and more attached to Japan and Japanese institutions.
“The Executive Order permitted establishment of military areas for the purpose of protecting national defense resources from sabotage and espionage. The Act of Congress ratified the Executive Order. Both were an exercise of constitutional power to wage war. Once the Executive and Congress have the power, they also have the freedom to use their own judgment in determining what the threat is and how it can be resisted. A court should not decide whether the Executive and/or Congress did the right thing nor should a court substitute its own judgment for that of the Executive or Congress.
“Measures adopted by the Government may point out that a group of one nationality is more dangerous to the country’s safety than any other group. This is not entirely beyond the limits of the Constitution and should not be condemned just because racial differences are usually irrelevant."
Thus paving the way for all those of Japanese decent to be interred. Many went willingly, following the orders of their government into these camps. Camps that were underfunded, under equipped, and under staffed. Many would die from these conditions.

But the spirit of America did not die with these people. Instead it flourished. Funny how a people forced into horrible conditions by their own government could still hold great love for that nation that imprisoned them.

They formed their own government (governing themselves with approval from the military commanders), they organized schools, medical clinics, scouting troops, civic organizations. They held drives for blood, for metal, for rubber, bought War Bonds and grew Victory Gardens. And some served.

Starting in Hawaii and then propelling to the mainland, young men of Japanese decent (known as Nisei) enlisted in the US Army. Those who had a very clear understanding of Japan and the Japanese language were sent to Washington D.C. to work in Military Intelligence. The rest form the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team. And what a history they have!

The 442, known affectionately as Buddhaheads, was a self-sufficient fighting force, and fought with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany. The unit became the most highly decorated military unit in the history of the United States Armed Forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients, earning the nickname “The Purple Heart Battalion.” Their motto: Go For Broke! showed the courage and determination of these men.

While other interred groups rallied against the US, with none of them enlisting in such numbers. The Nisei volunteered in great numbers. And died in great numbers too. This Regiment has the distinction of being the most highly decorated unit ever in American history. It would be hard for any unit to match their distinctive record of:
  • 8 Major Campaigns in Europe
  • 7 Presidential Unit Citations
  • 9,486 Purple Hearts
  • 21 Congressional Medals of Honor
  • 52 Distinguished Service Crosses
  • 1 Distinguished Service Medal
  • 560 Silver Stars, 28 with Oak Leaf Clusters in lieu of second
  • 22 Legion of Merit Medals
  • 4,000 Bronze Stars, 1,200 with Oak Leaf Clusters in lieu of second
  • 15 Soldier's Medals
  • 12 French Croix de Guerre with two Palms representing second awards
  • 2 Italian Crosses for Military Merit
  • 2 Italian Medals for Military Valor

A 442nd RCT squad leader checks for German units in France in November 1944.

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team, hiking up a muddy French road in the Chambois Sector, France, in late 1944.

It was through the actions of these men that the Japanese-American community was released from interment in December of 1944. What drove these men? It was an undying love for this nation. A love that interment, prejudice and hatred could not destroy. A love for the knowledge that in the United States, all are equal. Just sometimes it takes longer for the government to recognize that fact.

Go For Broke Memorial in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California

On this Pearl Harbor Day I remember the men who died in Hawaii, but I will also remember the patriots who served even when their own nation despised, hated and feared them enough to put them in camps. The men of the 100th Infantry Battalion/442 Regimental Combat Team. Americans regardless of what their nation thought of them at the time!

Pat Buchanan's Nazi and Islamist Appeasement

Pat Buchanan, promoting another book, accuses President Bush of making "a hash of history," as Bush warned of negotiating with Iran or Hamas, comparing it to negotiating with Adolf Hitler.

While Buchanan saturates the Leftist media with his message, insisting that there would have been no WWII had the world listened to Neville Chamberlain and curtailed Winston Churchill, Sultan Knish, reporting from NY to Israel, addresses Buchanan's "appeasement," in detail.

"The Sultan" is among the very best blogging for liberty and freedom for Israel, America and humanity, in general. He is a "blogger, columnist and freelance photographer born in Israel and currently living in New York City." His columns appear at IsraeleNews and Canada Free Press, he is an author at IsraPundit, and his blog is "Named one of the Jewish Press' Most Worthwhile Blogs, 2006, 2007 and 2008."

"The Sultan" may not have the air-time Buchanan has, but he is huge in the blogosphere, and this piece rebutting Buchanan's tendency to blame the WWII allies for causing the war, needs to be read and talked and blogged about.

Sultan Knish on Pat Buchanan's Nazi Appeasement
"whether it's Nazi Germany or Islamist Iran."

Can you hear the echo?
Iran has nothing to gain by war... No, it is not Iran that wants a war with the United States. It is the United States that has reasons to want a short, sharp war with Iran.

Why did Hitler not demand these lands back? Because he sought an alliance, or at least friendship, with Great Britain and knew any move on France would mean war with Britain -- a war he never wanted.
That echo is the sound of appeasement at the heart of Buchanan's rhetoric, 1939-2008.

Pat Buchanan has spent a lot of his career dancing around the Nazi question, from throwing in his lot with Holocaust deniers, defending Nazi War Criminals and badgering Reagan to lay a wreath at an SS memorial. Lately though Pat Buchanan has stopped dancing and begun to seriously lay down a revisionist history that seeks to blame Nazi crimes on England and America as an anti-war argument against the United States taking military action against the Hitlers of today and tomorrow.

Buchanan opened the hellgates back in 2005 by arguing that WW2 wasn't worth it since much of Eastern Europe wound up in Soviet hands anyway. Despite the backlash it would begin laying out one of Buchanan's key thesis that WW2 was a mistake, that Churchill and FDR had been wrong, and using the fall of Eastern Europe as a key plank in his argument.

The quote from Buchanan's 2005 article is typical of his disingenuous position

In 1938, Churchill wanted Britain to fight for Czechoslovakia. Chamberlain refused. In 1939, Churchill wanted Britain to fight for Poland. Chamberlain agreed. At the end of the war Churchill wanted and got, Czechoslovakia and Poland were in Stalin's empire. How, then, can men proclaim Churchill "Man of the Century"?

True, U.S. and British troops liberated France, Holland and Belgium from Nazi occupation. But before Britain declared war on Germany, France, Holland and Belgium did not need to be liberated. They were free. They were only invaded and occupied after Britain and France declared war on Germany – on behalf of Poland.
The pattern inherent in Pat Buchanan's Nazi apologetic, is the same one used today by defenders of Islamofascism-- it's to argue that any Nazi action was actually a reaction to the actions of England or Poland or America. This can be called Pat Buchanan's "But the Nazis Weren't Bothering Anyone" argument. It's a kissing cousin of the modern day anti-war "But Muslim Terrorists Weren't Bothering Anyone" argument that Buchanan himself has championed.

The logical fallacy at the heart of it is that it expects us to believe that Hitler had no ambitions on Western Europe and would not have acted against Western Europe. We know of course that he did. In Buchahan's universe, England and France should have let Hitler have Eastern Europe and waited until Nazi troops were actually attacking them. Considering that most of Western Europe was overrun even when Churchill did enter the war, letting Hitler and Stalin carve up Eastern Europe and giving Germany access to Volksdeutsche recruits and slave labor and allowing it to move against the Allies at its leisure-- would have course have been far more destructive, something Buchanan knows quite well.

Even in 2005 Buchanan had set the pattern for sneaking in small Nazi apologetics in between the lines, e.g
At least the Sudenten Germans wanted to be with Germany.
Just as he continues to do so to the present day.
If he (Hitler) wanted war with the West, why did he offer peace after Poland and offer to end the war, again, after Dunkirk?
Like most revisionist historians though, he's careful about tipping his hand. This is typical Buchanan and it's a typical apologetic for Western defenders of tyrannies that they sneakily support. Buchanan has avoided an outright defense of Nazi Germany, like Lindbergh and many of the WW2 era anti-war groups, his thesis has been to heap the blame on England, on Churchill and on the Allies.

So to fit the pattern Buchanan avoids actively justifying the Holocaust in his latest column, Was the Holocaust Inevitable? Instead he blames England and America winning the war for the Holocaust.

That Hitler was a rabid anti-Semite is undeniable. "Mein Kampf" is saturated in anti-Semitism. The Nuremberg Laws confirm it. But for the six years before Britain declared war, there was no Holocaust, and for two years after the war began, there was no Holocaust.

Not until midwinter 1942 was the Wannsee Conference held, where the Final Solution was on the table. That conference was not convened until Hitler had been halted in Russia, was at war with America and sensed doom was inevitable. Then the trains began to roll.

The Holocaust was not a cause of the war, but a consequence of the war. No war, no Holocaust.

Never mind of course that the Nazis had been killing Jews long before the Wannsee conference. One million Jews had been murdered before the Conference. The concentration camps were being built in 1940. The first gassings at Auschwitz began in 1941. Buchanan's cynical attempt at historical revisionism attempts to treat the Holocaust as a consequence of the Allies War on Hitler. Yet it's quite clear that the Holocaust had been in the offing well before then.

Buchanan himself can't make any credible connection for his claim that the Holocaust was a consenquence of the war. His primary argument that Hitler's conquests were a response to Western aggression fails to apply to the Holocaust. But Buchanan is recycling Linbergh's old argument that Britain and the Jews would have the most to lose from American intervention in WW2. That the Holocaust itself proved Linbergh wrong, has not deterred Buchahan in the least.

The ultimate thrust of Buchanan's arguments however is to discredit WW2's premise of military intervention against foreign tyrannies. It is the ultimate agenda behind Buchanan's book Churchill, Hitler and The Unnecessary War: How Britain Lost Its Empire and the West Lost the World. In penning his Nazi apologetics, Pat Buchahan is actually conducting a Jihad on behalf of the Fuhrer, but not merely Hitler, but the Hitlers of the present and the future. By attacking Churchill, Buchanan is trying to restore Appeasement to a position of honor and respect.

In Munich 1938, Buchanan makes that ultimate agenda increasingly clear
When President Bush, before the Knesset, used the word "appeasement" to label those who would negotiate with Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he invoked the most powerful analogy in any debate over war and peace.

No man wishes to be regarded as an "appeaser."

Chamberlain believed not -- and, after three trips to Germany that September, he effected the transfer of the Sudeten Germans to Berlin's rule, where they wished to be. He came home in triumph to be hailed as the greatest peacemaker of all time.

Why, then, are "Munich" and "appeasement" terms of obloquy?
Of course as Buchanan will tell us it was actually all the fault of those stubborn Poles. Appeasement it turns out is a good thing. It is those who refuse to appease tyrants who are to blame for what the tyrants do next.
Hitler did not want war with Poland. Indeed, he wanted the kind of alliance with Poland he had with Italy. But, first, Danzig must be resolved... The problem was the Poles, who refused to discuss Danzig... Then, in March, Czechoslovakia suddenly began to fall apart... Hitler intervened to guarantee the independence of Slovakia...

Chamberlain, now humiliated, mocked by Tory back-benchers, panicking over wild false rumors of German attacks on Romania and Poland, made the greatest blunder in British history. Unasked, he issued a war guarantee to Poland...
The final conclusion of course is that Poland brought the War on itself, by refusing perfectly reasonable demands from Germany. Hitler of course had no interest in invading Poland, he only wanted an alliance. In a minor variation of the same column titled "Bush Plays the Hitler Card", Buchanan spews out the same vile justification for laying the Nazi murder of millions at the feet of those countries that refused to surrender to Hitler.
The cost of the war that came of a refusal to negotiate Danzig was millions of Polish dead, the Katyn massacre, Treblinka, Sobibor, Auschwitz, the annihilation of the Home Army in the Warsaw uprising of 1944, and 50 years of Nazi and Stalinist occupation, barbarism and terror.
Thus all of Hitler's crimes are actually laid at the doorstep of those who refused to submit to him-- in Pat Buchanan's foully twisted moral universe. It is classic appeasement and it explains why Buchanan today heads up the faux conservative branch of the anti-war movement via the American Conservative, a magazine bankrolled by Taki, a convicted cokehead and features such as its editor, Scott McConnell, who had been fired from the New York Post. It's these dregs who continue to promote Buchanan's vision-- the question is, when all the dancing stops, what is that vision really?

While Buchanan is overtly arguing for appeasing tyrants, he's no peacenik. Outside of pacificists, those who argue for appeasing tyrants-- only do so to appease the tyrants that they favor. Buchanan was no fan of appeasing the USSR. Behind his defense of Chamberlain and his indictment of Churchill and Poland lurks a darker truth, which is that Buchanan favors Hitler's victory. Buchanan may not entirely embrace the Third Reich, from his standpoint the Nazis ventured too far into secularism, but as his arguments tellingly show, he believes that Nazi Germany was preferable to not only the USSR-- but to the rise of a Secularist Europe and America. The former is an argument Buchanan makes mostly by implication, the latter is one that slowly peeks out around the fringes of his rhetoric.

Many are asking why Fox News and other major Conservative outlets are giving Buchahan airtime. Part of the answer is his connections. Part of it is his limited supply of charm and TV ready personality. Much of it is because Pat Buchanan has mastered the art of talking around conservatives, leaving too many hosts and pundits missing the point.

Buchanan subtly introduces his real agendas, he doesn't use them as premises. He leaves the reader to draw the right conclusion with a few obvious prompts. Take Buchanan's The Lost Tribes of Israel column, which he begins by seemingly praising Israel for its achievements, then neatly digressing into a demographic discussion, that takes a sideswipe by blaming American Jews for abortion, progresses to arguing that Israel must appease the Arabs, concluding by subtly stating that Israel is doomed and it's time for America to embrace the Arab victors.
Those who do not like the Saudi monarchy should consider what is likely to rise in its place, should the House of Saud fall. The same is true of the Jordanian and Moroccan monarchies, and the sheikdoms, emirates and sultanates of the Persian Gulf.

In any struggle of generations, the critical question is often: Whose side is time on? As President Bush celebrates Israel's 60th birthday, and is celebrated in turn as Israel's best friend ever, it is a fair question to ask.
Of course Buchanan has already answered the question with reams of statistics that seem impressive, until you realize they're nothing more than projections and that they reflect a demographic reality that Israel has already survived. But it's typical of Buchanan's minuets that he dances around his real point, which is that it's time to toss Israel overboard and appease the Saudis. A conclusion that he buries in so many rhetorical questions and convoluted statements that it takes a discerning reader to get his point.

As the Prophet of Appeasement to Conservatives, Buchanan knows he has a difficult task, to pull the wool over the eyes of mainstream conservatives while remaining tight with the anti-war flank he's come to head. So Buchanan plays the academic, focuses on WW2, inserts occasional formal condemnations of Nazism, dances from spot to spot but the conclusion is always the same and it falls on the side of appeasing tyranny.

When Iran murders US soldiers, Buchanan argues that Iran is justified because they're only defending themselves.
How? Gen. David Petraeus explained. The Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah are arming, training and directing the Shia militia fighting U.S. and Iraqi forces in Basra and firing rockets into the Green Zone. Said Petraeus, the Quds Force is responsible for killing hundreds of American soldiers.

Why, then, would Iran bloody it up? Why, when things are going Iran's way in Iraq, would it risk war with the United States over Iraq?

The April 16 Los Angeles Times offers an answer. Iran's proxy war against us in Iraq may be Tehran's response to a U.S. proxy war being waged against Iran. Ahmadinejad may be exacting blood for blood.

If you've read this entire post, Buchanan's rhetoric here should seem early familiar. It's the very same rhetoric Buchanan used to defend Hitler's invasions up above.
If he (Hitler) wanted war with the West, why did he offer peace after Poland and offer to end the war, again, after Dunkirk?

Why, then, would Iran bloody it up? Why, when things are going Iran's way in Iraq, would it risk war with the United States over Iraq?
Buchanan is repeating himself and his thesis remains one and the same, to defend tyrannies and to blame their crimes on the democracies who resist them. Whether it's Nazi Germany or Islamist Iran.

That echo is the sound of appeasement at the heart of Buchanan's rhetoric, whether it is focused on 1939 or 2008.

Take Back our Country Weekend Open Trackbacks

There's more tucked inside the new Senate Immigration Reform Bill (s.1639) than just accepting illegals already in this country, and those who encroach after the Bill becomes law.

Read a portion of the Bill that will pay reparations to foreign aliens from WWII as well as link to important commentary on this issue. As Jim Fonte writing in National Review said it could include reparations to Nazis - and there's more. Time is of the essence. Call, fax or email your Senator this weekend.

Welcome to Open Trackback Weekend and Linkfest Haven. I’ll will manually add your trackbacks, with excerpts if available, to this page as they come in. Be patient: some trackbacks mysteriously travel the entire blogosphere before they arrive.

Not familiar with trackbacks? Here's how to do it:

1) Choose the article you want to promote. Copy my permalink URL and my trackback URL (you'll find mine just below these instructions). Add my blog name: Maggie's Notebook linked with my permalink, into the body of your post (just after your completed article). Show it like this: Trackposted to:
Maggie's Notebook, which gives me a live link within your article. Then send a trackback to me (you'll need my trackback URL), which will let me know that you are joining in the fun. I will then add your live link to my article.

2) If you use blogging software that doesn’t have “trackback” ability built in, you can use Wizbang Standalone Trackback Pinger or Kalsey’s Simpletracks.

3) If you don't have trackbacks yet, just leave a comment and say that you do not have trackbacks, with an excerpt from your post and your permalink, and I will add that too!

4) If you would like to join the Open Trackback Alliance visit The Crazy Rants of Samantha Burns.

5) If you would like to host a trackback party, or join another blogger's party, go to Linkfest Haven Deluxe for more information.

6) If you would like to join the Open TrackBack Provider Blogroll visit The Blue State Conservatives for more information.

Immigration Bill Will Pay WWII Reparations to Alien Residents

h/t/ to Debbie at Right Truth and her post of June 22 Immigration Bill has Reparations for Nazis. Did that get your attention as it did mine?

Webbloggin has the details. What this post is about, is the text of the portion of Senate Bill 1639, the newly fomented Senate Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill (that was Senate Bill 1348), hidden in the middle of this massive tome, that is known as the
“Study of War Time Treatment of Certain People,”

Webbloggin's post title is Immigration Bill Includes Possible Reparations for WWII Nazis, and cites a National Review piece by John Fonte of the Hudson Institute:

The Senate immigration bill could mean reparations for German Nazis. No, I’m not making this up. Look at Title IX, the “Study of War Time Treatment of Certain People,” also cited as the “Wartime Treatment Study Act,” Sections 901-916, pages 409-415<
Webblogin, as well as Right Truth, will lead you to the section and pages of the Bill mentioned above. It's in pdf format. If you do not want to download, I have "word processed" the text below.

It's late tonight, and so tomorrow morning I'm sure I'm might I find an error or two, but in the main, I think it is accurate enough for a perusial. When you talk to your Senator, you can say that you have a copy of the text in front of you.

You must read Webbloggin's work if you want this dreaded Bill dead. They explain why it may be possible, under this Bill, for a former Nazi to receive reparations from the United States and that's just one detail that will make you want to launch for the Capitol steps.

There are plans to "educate" your children on the despicable acts of the United States Government during World War II. Commissions are planned. I can see the Bureaucrats winging-off to Italy and Germany, at taxpayer expense - maybe a bit of research needed on those who were resident-alien-Italians in the U.S. during the war...maybe some research on the Italian Riveria. I can expand here, but really, Webbloggin and his link to John Fonte at National Review says well.

Let's get into this, understand it and burn up the phones, faxes and use our email to let our Senators know exactly how we feel about this, as well as about the entire attempt to turn 12-20 illegal aliens instant Z-Visa holders with all the rights of a legal immigrant.

What is this doing in Senate Bill 1639 and why haven't we heard about it? What else is in this thing? When you read the text you'll quickly see that this was not devised overnight. Closed door meetings in secrecy...no leaks...everything in the dark.... We desperately need term limits.

Again, the text below is offered as an alternative to a download. If I have transposed a letter or number, I don't think it matters here, and I'll just apologize in advance. It really isn't relevant to the fact that this thing is mashed into the middle of the many pages of this monstrosity.

As an aside, the bill mentions The Alien Enemies Act (An Act respecting alien enemies). Click the link if you are curious about why The Alien Enemies Act should be mentioned a couple of times in the Immigration Reform Bill, why it ties to the U.S. paying reparations to European Italians and European Germans (see other ethnic groupings in the text).

About the text below: the only thing I have knowingly changed is to abbreviate World War II to WWII and United States Government to US Government. The page number is shown in red. It was my intent to keep all headings and sub-headings exactly as in the bill, as well as all indentations and alphabetical and numerical markings (strange though they seem). By the way, it's long, very long...so a good scan for pertinent points should do.

SEC. 601. AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS.
(a) In General- There are authorized to be appropriated to the Department, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services, such sums as may be necessary to carry out--
(1) the provisions of section 462 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 ( U.S.C. 279); and
(2) the provisions of this Act.
(b) Availability of Funds- Amounts appropriated pursuant to subsection (a) shall remain available until expended.

TITLE IX -STUDY OF WARTIME TREATMENT OF CERTAIN PEOPLE
SEC. 901. SHORT TITLE.
This title may be cited as the "Wartime Treatment Study Act".

SEC. 601. AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS
SEC.__902. FINDINGS.
Congress makes the following findings:

(1) During WWII, the US Government deemed as "enemy aliens" more than 600,000 Italian-born and 300,000 German-born US resident aliens and their families and required them to carry Certificates of Identification and limited their travel and personal property rights. At that time, these groups were the 2 largest foreign-born groups in he US.

(2) During WWII, the US Government arrested, interned, or otherwise detained thousands of European Americans, some remaining in custody for years after cessation of WWII hostilities, and repatriated, exchanged, or departed European Americans, including American-born children, to European Axis nations, many to be exchanged for Americans held in those nations.

(3) Pursuant to a policy coordinated by the US with Latin American nations, any European Latin Americans, including German and Austrian Jews, were arrested, brought to the US, and interned. Many were later expatriated, repatriated, or deported to European Axis nations during WWII, many to be exchanged for Americans and Latin Americans held in those nations.

(4) Millions of European Americans served in the armed forces and thousands sacrificed their lives in defense of the US.

Page 410

(5) The wartime policies of the US Government were devastating to the Italian American and German American communities, individuals, and their families. The detrimental effects are still being experienced.

(6) Prior to and during WWII, the US restricted the entry of Jewish refugees who were fleeing persecution or genocide and sought safety in the US. During the 1930's and 1940's, the quota system, immigration regulations, visa requirements, and the time required to process visa applications affected the number of Jewish refugees, particularly those from Germany and Austria, who could gain admittance to the US.

(7) The US Government should conduct an independent review to fully assess and acknowledge these actions. Congress has previously reviewed the US Government's wartime treatment of Japaneses Americans through the Commission of Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians. An independent review of the treatment of German Americans and Italian Americans and of Jewish refugees fleeing persecution and genocide has not yet been undertaken.

(8) Time is of the essence for the establishment of commissions, because of the increasing danger of destruction and loss of relevant documents, the advanced age of potential witnesses and, most importantly, the advanced age of those affected by the US Government's policies. Many who suffered have already passed away and will never know of this effort.
